ROSE HILL — Mr. James Virdus Murray, 83, of the Greenevers Community, 
died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at his home.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at the Rose Hill Funeral Home 
Chapel with the Rev. Reginald A.Wells officiating. Burial will follow at the New

James O. Williams, 78

TURKEY — Mr. James Oliver Williams, 78, of Pine Ridge Road, died Tuesday, 
Jan. 6, 2009, at his home.

He is preceded in death by two sisters, Iris W. Jones and Joann Jones.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at Pinecrest Cemetery, 
Warsaw.

Mr. Williams is survived by two sons, Donald Benbrooks of Idaho, Ronald 
Benbrooks of Washington; daughters, Bobbi McNeese and husband, Kenneth, 
of Turkey, Susan Johnson and husband, Jeff, of Bothell, Washington, Beverly 
Jackson and husband, Mike, of Olympia, Washington; four sisters, Adelaide 
Byrd and Jewel Register of Warsaw, Janice Beasley of Goldsboro and Sue 
Autry; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Community Funeral

Elijah Davis, 86

ROSEBORO—Mr.Elijah “Pick” Davis , 86, 603 Bullard St., Roseboro, died Friday, 
Jan. 2, 2009 at the V.A. Nursing Home, Fayetteville,N.C.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 
Roseboro. Interment in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Clinton, with Military Honors.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Bernice Tatum Davis, of the home; two daughters, 
Deborah E. Davis of Roseboro,Sarah Davis Brazier of Pembroke Pines,Fla.; one 
brother, Harry Davis of Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren.

Chester Wynn, 74

CLINTON — Mr. Chester Wynn, 74, of 700 Isaac Weeks Road, died Sunday, 
Jan. 4, 2009, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 10, Sampson Chapel Church 
Disciples of Christ, Clinton with the Rev. Harold Boykin officiating. Burial will 
follow the Hillcrest Memorial Park, Clinton.

Mr. Wynn is survived by his wife, Loretta Wynn of the home, three daughters, 
Renezza McLamb of Lawton, Okla. Loletha McPhail of Clinton, and Juanita 
Broussard of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one son, Eric Wynn of Clinton; one sister, 
Evelyn Manuel of Dudle;, one brother, Edwin Wynn of Clinton; seven grandchildren 
and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 9, from 1 to 6 p.m. with the family present 
from 5 to 6 p.m. at Brock Memorial and Worley Funeral Home.

Junius A. Coley, 91

WINSTON-SALEM — Junius A. “Bud” Coley, 91, son of Ethel Williams and Junius 
A. Coley Sr., passed away, Jan. 5, 2009 at his home in Winston-Salem. 

He was born in Red Springs, Robeson County, Aug. 2, 1918 and lived in Robeson 
County most of his life. He graduated from King’s Business College in Raleigh one 
month before Pearl Harbor. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Africa, 
Italy, France, Germany and Belgium, being discharged as a Tech/Sgt in 1945. He 
studied Interior Design on the G.I. Bill of Rights at the Capitol Department Store in 
Fayetteville for four years. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1959 as an Interior 
Designer with Harvel’s Furniture and then with Everett Parker Stutts Interiors and 
Antiques on Burke Street until Mr. Stutts sudden death in 1969. He became a 
member of American Society of Interior Designers while working for Mr. Stutts and 
operated Bud Coley Interiors and Antique Shop on Burke Street until his retirement 
at age 65.

He is survived by three daughters and eight grandchildren, all living in Texas. He is 
also survived by two nephews, Michael Warren and Phillip (Butch) Warren of 
Sampson County; and by two nieces, Marlyn Boyette of Chapel Hill and Marianna 
Stacy and husband Don of Wilmington. 

The body will be cremated and a small private graveside service will be for family 
and close friends at Alloway Cemetery at Red Springs on Saturday, Jan.10, 
2009 at 1 p.m.

Margaret P. Pugh, 97

CLINTON — Margaret Pauline Pugh, 97, of 711 Sampson St. died Sunday, Jan. 
4, 2009, at Sampson Regional Hospital. 

The funeral will be 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at Big Piney Grove Missionary Baptist 
Church. Interment will be in the Sandhill Cemetery.

Viewing will be held Thursday, Jan. 6, from 12 to 6 p.m. with the family present

She is survived by two sisters, Sallie Bennett and Martha Goodman both of 
Clinton and a host of nieces and nephews.

HAMPSTEAD — Samuel Tony Morrisey, of 340 Williams Store Road, formerly 
of Turkey, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Thursday evening, Jan. 8, 2009, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Williams Love Grove 
Missionary Baptist Church. The funeral will be held 12 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at 
Greater Six Run Baptist Church, Turkey. Burial will follow in the Williams Love 
Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Hampstead.

William Cromartie, Jr, 81

GARLAND — Mr. William Cromartie Jr., 81, of 3704 Harrells Hwy., died Sunday, 
Jan. 4, 2009 at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan., 9, at Carter Funeral Home in 
Garland by the Rev. Joseph Boone. Burial will follow in the Gibbs Cemetery 
in Garland.

Mr. Cromartie is survived by four daughters; Nancy Kerr, Lillie D. Parker, and 
Jacqueline Cromartie, all of Garland, and Marion Morrisey of Lumberton, three 
sons, William I. Cromartie of Elizabethtown, Bobby J. Cromartie and Michael 
Cromartie, both of Garland; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Annie B. Worthy, 93

CLINTON — Annie B. Worthy, 93, 78 Abron St. died Thursday, Jan. 8 , 2009 at 
home.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 12 2009, at Butler and Son Funeral 
Services, in Clinton. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Ms. Worthy is survived by two daughters, Priscilla Myers, of Clinton, and Dorcas 
Graham-Suitland, Md.; one son, the Rev. Al Worthy, of Beulaville; eight grandchildren 
and five great grandchildren.

William Grady, 79

WARSAW — Mr. William “Bill” Grady, 79, died peacefully at home surrounded by 
his family on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m., today, Jan. 10, in the chapel of Community Funeral 
Home, of Warsaw, with the Rev. Robert Bandy officiating. Visitation was held Friday, 
Jan. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Community Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Devotional 
Gardens, of Warsaw, following the funeral service.

Mr. Grady was a United States Army Veteran and a native of Duplin County. He 
was a farmer most of his life. He spent his later years caring for his beloved wife, 
Annie Marie, until her death in July of 2006. He also enjoyed going to the beach 
with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening 
and growing his prize tomatoes.

Mr. Grady was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Neil Chambers 
Grady; his brothers, Marvin, J.T., T.C. and Harvey; and his sisters, Ernestine 
Summerlin and Irene Wood.

Mr. Grady is survived by his four daughters, Annette Norwood and husband, 
Randy, of Warsaw Gail King and husband, George, of Mount Olive, Cynthia 
Taylor and friend Carol Britt, of Warsaw, and Becky Weeks and husband, Mark, 
of Faison; his son, Billy Grady and wife, Gwen Lanier Grady, of Warsaw; his 
grandchildren, Matt Norwood and wife, Jennifer, of Warsaw, Josh Norwood and 
wife, Lauren, of Kenansville, Laura Lambert and husband, Rodney, of Calypso, 
George King, Jr. and fiancé, Jamie, of Mount Olive, Dawn Bell and husband, 
David, of Kenansville, Karla Minyard and husband, Shawn, of Warsaw, Jonathan 
Holloman, of Warsaw, Patrick Stephens, of Warsaw, Sonya Revels and husband, 
Jeffrey, of Clinton, Chris Grady and wife, Sandy, of Warsaw; his great grandchildren, 
Camden Norwood, Alison Lambert, Chelsea Bell, Madison and Will Minyard, Evan, 
Lauren and Emma Grace Revels, Taylor, Ethan and Hayley Grady and Quinton 
Davis; his sister, Olive Jones and Coy, of La Grange.

Despite being diagnosed with lung cancer in February of 2004, Mr. Grady 
continued to enjoy life until May 2008, when he was diagnosed with brain 
cancer. 

The family would like to thank the hospice staff of 3HC, Pat Benson, of Faison 
and Jean Boutin, of Roseboro, for their care of Mr. Grady during his last months 
at home.

Nicie O. Murray, 77

TEACHEY — Mr. Nicie Ophelia Murray, 77, of 150 Newton Rd., died 
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Cape Fear Hospice Center.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. today, Jan. 10, at Adoram Baptist Church 
Cemetery.

A wake was held Friday, Jan. 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home, 
in Warsaw.



Essie M. Jackson, 69

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Essie Mae Jackson, 69, formally of Turkey, died Sunday 
Jan. 4, 2009, at Interfaith Medical Center.

She is the daughter of the late Neimah and Willie Morrisey Faison.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m., today, Jan. 10, at the Greater Six Runs Baptist 
Church with pastor Leslie Morrisey officiating. Burial will follow in the Morrisey 
Cemetery.

She is survived by six children, Ronald, Mike, Darryl, Barbara Ann, Laureen 
and Willie Mae, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Margaret Jackson, Othelle 
Jackson and Mary Smith of Turkey; fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-
grandchildren.

Warsaw Rd., in Turkey.

STEDMAN— Mrs. Mavis Eloise Cashwell, 86, of 966 Armelia Drive, died

Mrs. Cashwell was a member of Concord Baptist Church. She was a retired 
seamstress with Stedman Garments.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Cashwell and Rex Cashwell, both of Stedman; 
one brother, Ernest Howell of Autryville; six grandchildren, and four great-
grandchildren.

GARLAND—Mrs. Ruby Louise Maxwell Smith, 93, of 14987 Highway 242 
North, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2009, at her home.

Briar Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Neil Smith officiating. Burial will 
follow at Old Bluff Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Cumberland County, the daughter of the late 
Bunion Bunny Maxwell and Lillie Belle Melvin Maxwell. She was a 
homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Henry B. Smith; 
and four sons, Dan, Laverne, Lacy and Charlie.

Mrs. Smith is survived by: five daughters, Ruby Eldridge Hudson of New 
Bern, Mary L. Parker of Garland, Brenda Hales of Roseboro, Peggy Little 
of Siler City and Effie Kay McDuffie of Garland; son, Kenneth Smith, of 
White Oak; 26 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-
grandchildren.

ROSEBORO — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Willard, 81, of 1012 Autry Hwy., passed

Mrs. Willard was born in 1927 and was a native of Sampson County. She is 
preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Olen Willard, one son, James Olen 
Willard, and her mother, Ida Jane Wrench. She was a homemaker. 

Mrs. Willard is survived by two sons: Lloyd Keith Willard, and Denver Ray 
Willard, both of Roseboro; six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

PRINCETON —  Jackie Cleveland Lassiter, 53, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 
14, 2009, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Home with Rev. Lewis Forsythe, Rev. Andy Stovall and Rev. Lewis Baker 
officiating.

family home.

with Dr. Ed Gunter and the Rev. Charles Ray Jernigan officiating. A private burial

Born in 1929 in Sampson County, Mrs. Vann was the daughter of the late Roy 
and Ruby Royal Alphin. She attended East Carolina University and was a 
member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a retired employee with 
the Department of Social Services.

She is survived by two daughters, Lyn V. and husband, Felton Hobbs, Lisa V. 
and husband, Andy Pope, all of Clinton, five grandchildren, four step-
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren

YOUNGSVILLE — Mr. Edward Francis Bland, Sr., 87, died Sunday, Jan. 11,

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Beckwith Bland.

Mr. Bland was born in Sampson County, the son of the late Carrie Boney Bland 
and Abbe Bland and was a veteran of the U S Navy. He was a 1949 graduate of 
Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Nashville, Tenn. and devoted over 
twenty years of his life to funeral service. In later years, Mr. Bland was the owner 
and operator of the State Soda Shop in Raleigh.

Mr. Bland is survived by his daughters, Susan Maher of New Bern and Jane 
Andersen of Raleigh; sons, Ed Bland, Jr. and wife, Lysa of Raleigh, Bill Bland 
and wife, Tina of Youngsville and Danny Bland and wife, April of Wilson;

Church. Three brothers, Fred, Earl, and Gary Herring preceded him in death.

wife, Stephanie, of Salemburg and Carl Wayne Herring and wife, Rosemary, of

GOLDSBORO—Mrs. Ruby Pope Player, 75, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 
at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Ruby was born in Sampson County to the late Carl Pope and Ruby Alston Pope. 
She was married to the late Ernest Linwood Player. Ruby had worked with Sunburst 
Foods in Goldsboro and was a member of New Life Baptist Church. Ruby was a 
devoted mother and was very much loved by her children.

Martha D. Runge, 73

WANCHESE— Mrs. Martha Angela Daughtry Runge, 73, passed away at her 
home after a long illness on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, in Wanchese, with her 
family at her side. 

Born Feb. 3, 1935, in Raleigh, she was the daughter of James Hallie Daughtry of 
Clinton, and Angerola Melson Daughtry of Wanchese. She grew up in Kenansville, 
and after graduating from high school, she attended Indiana University and George 
Washington University.

She lived most of her adult life in Alexandria, Va. She was a distinguished r
esearcher and the financial administrator at George Washington University for 
35 years. After her retirement, she and her husband moved to Wanchese, her 
ancestral home. She was a member of Bethany Methodist Church (where she 
was christened as an infant), the Dare County Shrinettes and the Daughters of 
the American Revolution, having served as Regent of the John Alexander Chapter 
in Alexandria, Va., and as a Museum Docent at the DAR Headquarters in 
Washington, D.C.

She was an accomplished pianist in her youth and had a lifelong love of classical 
music. She was passionate about her ancestral genealogy, gardening, cooking 
and renovating her home. She was an enthusiastic traveler, traveling throughout 
the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. She 
adored and cherished her children, grandchildren and her entire family.

She was predeceased by her husband Deane Runge in 2002, her parents, James 
Hallie Daughtry in 1959 and Angerola Melson Daughtry in 2001, and her brother, 
Samuel E. Daughtry, in 1978. 

She is survived by her two sons: James Phillip Alan Bentz, his wife, Lynn, and 
their children, Haley and Matthew of Lexington Park, Md., and David Melson 
Bentz, his wife, Laura, and their children, David and Jessica of Virginia Beach, 
Va. She is also survived by one brother and two sisters: James Ventress Daughtry 
of St. Leonard, Md., Johnnie Daughtry Koromilas of Dover, NH, and Mary Hallie 
Daughtry and her husband, Stephen Tibbetts of Brunswick, Maine. She is also 
survived by four nieces, six nephews, nineteen grand nieces and nephews and 
two aunts, Willa D. Granacher and Louise D. Klee of Clinton.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Bethany Methodist Church, 
Wanchese, NC, with the Rev. Bill Cottingham officiating.

Friends may view from 1 to 2 p.m. directly before the service at Bethany Methodist 
Church.

The graveside service and interment will be at the Clinton Cemetery at 3 p.m. on 
Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 with the Rev. Cottingham officiating.

There will be a viewing at 2 p.m. at the graveside.

He was born on August 19, 1917 in Clinton to the late Thomas Algernon and Maude W.

was a longtime member of Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington. He retired from 
Exxon after 42 years of service.

by a brother, Johnny Draughon. He was the owner and operator of Martins Pork in 
Falcon. He was a member of South River Community Church.

William C. Darden, 49

LEXINGTON, S.C.—Mr. William C. “Bill” Darden, 49, of 321 Cinda Leigh Drive Lexington, 
S.C., formerly of Clinton, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at his home.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 13, at Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel 
with the Rev. Tommy Denton and the Rev. Dr. Louie Andrews officiating. Interment will

Mr. Darden was born Feb. 23, 1960 in Clinton, N.C. He was a member of Corpus 
Christi Catholic Church, a graduate of Clinton High School and attended Fayetteville 
Technical College. Prior to his death, he owned Darden Electric Company.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Darden; son, Dylan Campbell Darden, both of 
Lexington, S.C.; father, Allen C. Darden of Clinton; mother, Virginia Campbell 
Packard of Greenville, S.C. He was preceded in death by his brother, Allen Duncan 
Darden.

A visitation will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, March 12, at Caughman-Harman

Col. John T. Ashford Jr., 91

CLINTON — Col. John Thomas Ashford, Jr. USAF (Retired), 91, of 704 East Morris 
Circle, Dunn, formerly of 104 Country Club Circle, Clinton, died Tuesday, March 17, 
2009 in the Carlton Powell Hospice Center in Lillington. 

Funeral services will be held, 2 p.m., Saturday, March 21, at Graves Memorial 
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Louie Andrews officiating. Burial will follow in the 
Clinton Cemetery.

Born on Sept. 28, 1917 in Sampson County, Col. Ashford was the son of the late John 
Thomas and Lula Mae Beaman Ashford. 

Col. Ashford was an Army Air Corps bomber pilot during World War II, stationed in 
England. He was a USAF flight trainer during the Korean War, and he later served as 
a director in reserve training planning during the Vietnam War.

Col. Ashford was a long-time resident of Clinton. He was also a member, elder and 
Sunday School teacher at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clinton. He was 
preceded in death by his beloved wife Lois, and daughter Jean Carol Boerckel.

He is survived by sons, Tom and wife, Beatrice, of Fairfax, Va., Bruce and wife, Bobbi, of
 Dunn; son-in-law, Richard Boerckel of Newtown, Pa.; grandchildren, Jocelyn and John 
of Fairfax, Va., Bruce and wife, Lauren, Joy Lewis and husband, Jason, Peter and wife, 
Kristen, Elizabeth, Kimberly Mills and husband, Jason, and Andy and wife, Kelly; great-
grandchildren, Ashlyn, Laney, Reese, Drew, Jacob, Elijah, Laurel and one “on the way.”

Mrs. Hobbs, a native of Sampson County, was the widow of Douglas Lee Hobbs and the 
daughter of the late Solomon Otto “Buddy” Tyndall and Rosa McDowell Tyndall. She was 
also preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Earl Tyndall. A member of Keener United 
Methodist Church, she had worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at Keener Lumber Co. 

She is survived by a daughter Lori Hobbs Langston and husband, David, of Clinton and 
children Maggie and Ben; a son, Christopher Lee Hobbs and wife, Amanda, of Clinton and 
children Madelyn and Molly; three sisters Grace Kaiding of Sanford, Patricia White of 
Clinton and Debbie Wrench of Wilmington and many close friends.

served as Sunday School superintendent. 

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ruth Callihan Strickland, of the home; two 
daughters, Ruth Ann Johnson of Faison and Joan Marie Herring of Clinton; two sons, O.D. 
(David) Strickland Jr. and wife, Connie, of Columbus, Ohio and John Mark Strickland and
 wife, Charlene, of Turkey; nine grandchildren, Lisa Johnson Gallagher, Carla Johnson Woods, 
David C. Johnson, Joshua Strickland, Holly Herring Holloman, Matthew Herring, John Mark

CLINTON—Associate pastor Geraldine M. Goodman of New Jerusalem Worship Center, 59, of 
38 Church Road, died March 15, 2009, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Rev. Ken Simmons, Dr. Al Harmon, and the Rev. Ricky Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow

Mrs. Goodman, born in Bladen County, was the daughter of the late George Alton Mitchell 
and Stella Marie Jacobs Mitchell. She was a homemaker and a member of New Jerusalem 
Worship Center. A sister, Vera Redwine of Whiteville, and a brother, Mike Mitchell of Bolton, 
preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, pastor James Goodman of the home; a daughter, Jerri Lynn 
Perry of Clinton; two sons, Jamie Earl Goodman of the home and Joseph Sean Goodman of 
Lumberton; three sisters, Shirley Freeman of Bolton, Wilma Coleman of Lake Waccamaw 
and Theresa Huggins of Hallsboro; three brothers, George Mitchell of Clinton, Clarence 
Mitchell of Bolton, and Donnie Mitchell of Atkinson; 11 grandchildren and a host of nieces, 
nephews, friends and family.

FAYETTEVILLE—Mrs. Avis Jackson Naylor, 84, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Cape
 Fear Valley Medical Center.

Avis was a native of Sampson County. She was a member of Second Baptist Church 
in Fayetteville and was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She was a 
retired employee with the Burlington Industries after 42 years.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m., today, March 17, at Jernigan Warren Funeral Home 
Chapel with the Rev. Sherrill Boykin officiating. Burial will follow in the LaFayette 
Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Her nephews will serve as her pallbearers.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert D. Naylor; a son, Don Naylor; and a 
grandson, Donny Naylor.

She is survived by two grandchildren Melissa Wrench and husband, Clark, of Dunn and 
Tim Naylor and wife, Angie, of Dunn; four great grandchildren Lauren, Trace, Logan and

Bobby R. Porter, 75

ROSEBORO — Mr. Bobby Ray Porter, 75, of 1093 Reeda Branch Road, went home to be 
with his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 20, 2009, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. 

A funeral service will be held, 3 p.m., on Tuesday, March 24, at Hollands Chapel Pentecostal 
Holiness Church with the Rev. Wiley Clark, the Rev. Michael Oliver and Mr. Henry Faircloth 
officiating. Burial will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Salemburg. 

Mr. Porter was born in 1933 in Sampson County to the late Dixon and Rena Mae McLamb 
Porter. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lilston Porter and a sister, Mary P. Kelly. 
He served for 21 years on the Sampson Community College Board of Trustees and four 
years with the Sampson County Board of Education. He was a member of Hollands Chapel 
Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served for over 30 years as Sunday School 
superintendent. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired inspector with the 
U.S. Department of Agriculture. 

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Betty T. Porter of the home; three daughters, Malia P. 
Hollingsworth and husband, Billy, of Salemburg, Kaye P. Heinz and husband, Dan, of 
Salemburg and Dina P. Fann and husband, Eric, of Coats; one sister, Frances P. 
Honeycutt of Roseboro; five grandchildren, Gina Rae Autry, Daniel Ivan Heinz, Brynn 
Porter Fann, Allyson Jewel Heinz and Anna Kathleen Heinz and one great-grandson, 
Hollin Blake Autry.

Born in 1919 in Sampson County, Mrs. Strickland was the daughter of the late Charles 
Shaw and Metta Tadlock King. She was a member of Rowan Baptist Church where she 
served many years in the children's department as a special mother to many and a Sunday 
School teacher. She was a homemaker and a caregiver. She was the widow of Alman 
Strickland.

She is survived by a daughter, Glenda Todd and husband, Billy, of Clinton; two sisters, 
Geneva Matthis of Clinton and Henreitta Howard of Pace, Fla.; one brother, Roscoe King 
of Greenville, two grandchildren, Andrew Todd and Sarah Todd.

She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Alman Strickland and a brother, John King.

ROSE HILL — Deacon Holland Boney, 100, of Greenevers community, died Sunday, March 
22, 2009 at home.

Deacon Boney is predeceased by his wife Juanita Butler Boney and his son Douglas Boney. 
Mr. Boney was a retired farmer and barber. He served as a deacon at New Christian Chapel 
Church, Rose Hill, for over 20 years. 

He was a life-long resident and supporter of the Greenevers community.

NEWTON GROVE—Mr. Samson Warren Jr., 67, of 818 Main St., died Tuesday, March 24,

Friday, March 27, 2009. The Rev. Walter W. Gaskins Jr. will officiate. The family will receive

Sam, as he was known to most everyone today, was the son of Samson Warren Sr. and
 Mary Anna Tart Warren. Mr. and Mrs. Warren preceded him in death. Sam was employed 
in the Computer Science Department at N.C. State University from 1972 until 1985. After 
leaving N.C. State, Sam established and was the owner and operator of Sam’s Tool Service 
that provided a valuable tool repair service to the construction and manufacturing industry 
throughout the area.

Sam is survived by his sister, M. Jo Warren of the home; his brother and sister-in-law, 
Larry D. and Patricia W. Warren of Newton Grove; as well as many dear and wonderful 
relatives and friends.

Brenda S. Sullivan; a son, Charles G. Smith; a grandson, Kevin Strickland; a granddaughter,
 Linda Kay Maxwell; three sisters, Katie Lewis, Louise Taylor and Annie Ruth Edwards; 
and three brothers, Marvin, Walter and Benny Lee Benton.

She is survived by three daughters, all of Clinton, Joyce S. Maxwell, Gale S. Strickland

Dr. Dexter C. Coleman III, 65

WARSAW—Dr. Dexter Caswell Coleman, III, 65, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 
at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Coleman was the son of Dexter C. Coleman Jr. and Frances Grace Priest Coleman.

He was born in Riverside, Calif., where his father served in the U.S. Army during 
World War II. He was raised in Elizabethtown, where he graduated from high school 
and received the badge of honor as an Eagle Scout. Moving to Wilmington as a young 
adult, Dexter was employed by W. R. Grace for 29 years and attended UNCW while 
working to raise his family. He graduated with honors with a bachelor of science 
degree in environmental chemistry and received the John T. Hoggard award for 
academic excellence. In 1988, at the age of 44, he entered dental school at the 
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated with a doctorate in dental 
surgery in 1992 and was offered admittance to medical school. Following the desires 
of his heart, to work as a dentist in a small town in eastern North Carolina where he 
could serve his fellow man, he entered into the dental practice with Dr. William 
Stoppelbein in Warsaw. The practice of Stoppelbein, Coleman and Hardison was formed 
in 2001 with the addition of Dr. Chris Hardison as a partner. For the past 17 years, Dexter 
has enjoyed practicing dentistry with his loving staff, “his girls.” His generous nature has 
afforded comfort to many people in this community. One of the greatest loves of his life 
was his airplane, N3665W. He purchased this in 1995 with a friend and spent many hours 
in the air. Dr. Coleman was loved by everyone who knew him. His fun loving spirit was 
evidenced by his love for wearing brightly colored Hawaiian shirts. One could always tell 
when he was near by the jingle of the coins in his pocket. He was a member of the board 
of directors of Southern Bank in Warsaw.

Dr. Coleman is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Katherine Chesser Coleman 
of the home; a daughter, Angela Leigh Coleman of Greenville, S.C.; a son Chuck 
Coleman of Lake Waccamaw; a brother, Kenneth Lee Coleman and wife, Catherine, 
of Roseboro; four grandchildren, Monica Brooke Blanton, Coleman Luis Fresquez, 
Gabriella Marie Fresquez and Ella Bess Coleman.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held today, March 13, at 1 p.m. 
at Warsaw Baptist Church in Warsaw.

DUDLEY — Edna Lewis Jones Oakley, 75, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009,

Edna was born in Duplin County on January 19, 1934, to the late John William Lewis, 
Jr. and Millie Thompson Lewis. She worked for many years as a seamstress. Edna 
will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a

William “Pete” Sinclair

RALEIGH — William “Pete” Alvis Sinclair, 74, of 2910 Dove Lane, died Tuesday, April 
14, 2009. A native of Sampson County, son to the late Lacy A. and Vada Pope 
Sinclair, Pete was a veteran of the United States Army and an insurance agent for 
many years, but the most important role he held was that of a loving and doting husband, 
father, grandfather and brother. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie 
Haywood Sinclair.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Ernest D. Newton Jr., 81, died on Sunday, April 26,
 2009.

He was the son of the late Ernest D. Newton and Emma Proctor Newton of Atlanta,
 Ga. He was married to the late Jane Morisey Newton formerly of Clinton.

A memorial service will be held at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 3222 Middle St., 
Sullivans Island, S.C. on Saturday, May 2, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception at
 the church. The Rev. Vance Polley will officiate. 

He was a graduate of Davidson College and served as an officer in the U.S. Army 
after graduation. Ed worked for The Mead Paper Co. in Atlanta and in the textile 
industry. He was a member of Sunrise Presbyterian Church of Sullivans Island, S.C.

MOUNT OLIVE — Ms. LuRae Clark Tyndall, 47, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at 
Lenoir Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. 

A native of Greene County, she was born January 18, 1962, the daughter of William Ray 
Clark and Sara Rebecca “Becky” Patrick Clark. LuRae was a graduate of Greene Central 
High School and had attended Mount Olive College and Lenoir Community College. She 
was employed with JSC International, of Faison, where she was an office manager. LuRae 
truly enjoyed the beach and spending time at her place at Goose Creek near Emerald Isle.

Funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 16, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral 
Service with the Rev. Alan Joyner and the Rev. Glenn Turner officiating. Interment will 
follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

In addition to her parents, LuRae was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, 
John D. and Maggie Toler Clark and her maternal grandparents, Reverend C.L. and 
Clara Patrick.

Her surviving family includes her fiancé, Jeff Sutton of Newton Grove; daughters, 
Christen Tyndall and Lindsey Tyndall, both of Newton Grove; Jeff’s daughter whom 
she considered her own, Lindsay Sutton of Newton Grove; her devoted sister, Christy 
Clark Turner and husband, Glenn, of Deep Run; grandchildren, Jayden Bradford and 
Logan Oates; and her many special aunts and uncles of the Clark and Patrick families.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 

Mrs. Hollingsworth was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service with over 22 
years . She also earned her real estate license after retiring from the postal service and 
attended Sampson Technical Institute. She was a longtime resident of Roseboro. She
 loved to travel especially to the beach and to Las Vegas, Nevada.

She is survived by one daughter, Peggy H. Boal, of Columbia, S.C.; two granddaughters, 
Donna Boal Laterza, and her husband Dave, of Fanwood, New Jersey and Deborah E. 
Lukan, and her husband Sean, Milford, Conn.; two great-grandsons Alessandro Dixon 
Laterza and Antonio Hollingsworth Laterza.

Jefferson D. Johnson, IV

RALEIGH — Mr. Jefferson Deems Johnson, IV, fondly referred to as “Jeff D.” was a light 
unto this world. His smile affected everyone with whom he came in contact.

Jeff D’s love for music and people was more than amazing. He loved “Hee Haw” and Elvis 
from an early age and his self-taught guitar skills were acquired from watching Roy 
Clarke’s TV appearances.

Born in Clinton, on June 7, 1973, to Susan Hill Blount Johnson and Jefferson Deems 
Johnson, III, where he lived until moving to Raleigh at age 18. He resided in Raleigh until 
age 24 when he moved to the Carolina Living and Learning Center, a group home for 
autistic adults near Pittsboro, N.C. There he enjoyed 12 happy years, in their care with 
a loving extended family.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Ellen Beaman Johnson of Raleigh and Susan 
B. Johnson Fordham and husband, Henry C. “Hank” Fordham; two nieces, Evelyn 
Johnson Fordham and Abbey Evangeline Fordham of Cary; an uncle, George Blount of 
Asheville; an aunt, Mary Lily Johnson Nuckolls and her husband Dr. James G. Nuckolls 
of Galax, Va. 

Services will be held Friday, June 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Mitchell Funeral

She devoted herself to family, friends, church and the community. She was a lifelong 
member of the Newton Grove United Methodist Church and was a Charter member of

and had worked there for over 50 years. 

Mr. Barefoot is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Chesnutt Barefoot, of the home;

NEWTON GROVE — Mrs. Ellen Warren Tart, 94, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 8, at Newton Grove United 
Methodist Church with the Rev. Joel W. Kettner, Col. Russell F. Bailes and the Rev. 
Walter Gaskins officiating. Interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Mrs. Tart is survived by her daughters, Judy, and husband, Joel Kettner, of Wallace, Rose 
and husband, Rusty Bails Jr., of Leesville, La., Louise and husband, Jim Scott III, of Jarratt, 
Va., Elizabeth and husband, Bill Turner, of Newton Grove, and Deborah, and husband, Jeff 
Bell of Clinton; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Tart is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Grady Gordon Tart; son, the 
Honorable Jerry Gordon Tart; daughter, Doll Warren Tart; granddaughter, Frances Ellen 
Crawford; and parents, Joseph C. and Bertha Britt Warren.

She devoted herself to family, friends, church and the community. She was a lifelong 
member of the Newton Grove United Methodist Church and was a Charter member of 
the Order of the Eastern Star chapter 267. The family wishes to thank the compassionate 
caregivers whose dedication will never be forgotten: Cynthia Smith, Shirley Williams, 
Patsy Warren, Ethel Warren, Willa Booth and Peggy Hicks.

Clinter R. Cooper, 66

CLINTON — Clinter R. Cooper, 66, of 1373 Big Piney Grove Road, died Friday, June
 5, 2009, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville. 

A funeral will be held Friday, June 12, at Paradise Funeral Home, Saginaw, Mich. 
Interment in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. 

Survivors are wife, Dorothy Cooper of the home; seven daughters, Katrina Cole of 
Clinton, 

Robin Brown of Orlando, Fla., Lastisha Fuller, Tonya Godwine, Tiffany Hicks and
 Tonya Patrick, all of Saginaw, Mich., and Stephanie Shehee of Ringold, La.; two 
sons, Carl Cooper of Saginaw, Mich. and Davis Clark of South Bend, Ind.; two 
brothers, Nathan Cooper of Chicago, Ill. and Charles Stidhum of Saginaw, Mich.; 
seven sisters, Annie Goodwine, Barbara Hoskins, Emma Haines, Millie Stidhum-
Stewart, Debra Clark and Carolyn Barber all of Saginaw, Mich. and Mamie Cooper 
of Greenville, Mich.; 26 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. 

Public viewing will be held Monday, June 18, from 1 to 6 p.m., family present 5 to

Tiburcio Flores, 80

CLINTON — Mr. Tiburcio Flores, 80, of 1084 Lanefield Drive, Warsaw died Saturday, 
June 6, 2009 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Royal Hall Funeral Home 
Chapel with the Rev. Victor Serrano officiating.  Burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at 
the family cemetery at 1084 Lanefield Road, Warsaw.

Born in 1928 in Mexico, and was preceded in death by his parents Margurito Flores and 
Isabel Servantes.

The family will receive friends Monday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Royal Hall Funeral 
Home.



Charles “Lea” Stafford, 31

CLINTON — Mr. Charles Lealon “Lea” Stafford, 31, of 638 Timberlake Drive, died Saturday, 
June 6, 2009.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 408 College St., 
with the Rev. Ron Cava and the Rev. Ron Davis officiating. A graveside service will be held 
Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Rowan Baptist Church Cemetery.

Born in 1977 in Sampson County, Lea was a member of First Baptist Church, a Lieutenant 
with the Clinton Fire Department and a part-time police officer with the Newton Grove Police 
Department with a degree in criminal justice. He was owner and operator of Ace Lawn Care 
and a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon F. Stafford; one daughter, Kelsey Lane Cannon of the 
home; mother and father, Melvin and Sandra Stafford of Clinton; a sister, Beth S. Beasley 
and husband, Jamie of Clinton; two nephews, Peyton Lea Beasley and Landry Lucas 
Beasley both of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and 
Mable West.

The family will receive friends following the funeral at the church and other times at his 
home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the N. C. Firefighters Foundation, 5260 
Taylors Bridge Hwy., Clinton, N.C. 28328.

Selma Rose Strawser, 86

VASS — Mrs. Selma Rose Strawser, 86, of Vass, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 
FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Mrs. Strawser was born August 9, 1922 to the late Frank and Anna Wojciechowski in 
Philadelphia, Penn.

Inurnment will be at a later date at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn.
