Petition July Term 1788 by Sarah Alexander widow of John Alexander who departed this life about twelve months ago possessed of a tract of land on the east side of Scuppernong River containing fifty acres or more, which has passed from one hand to another until it came into the possession of one Zilpha Alexander. Petitioner is entitled to dower in this land as the widow and relict of John Alexander deceased, and prays the court issue a precept to the sheriff to assemble twelve uninterested freeholders to set off her dower in this land. There is a second copy of this petition made by Thomas Mackey on 12 Aug 1788 that was served against the defendant, Zilpha Alexander, by John Snell, deputy sheriff. It has a notation that says "Z. Alexander wife of Isaac agreement made at the time of dower to the father (of ? brother) {wife struck through} widow that hey would give up dower to her in consider - of the one brother" and the rest of the note is unreadable except that a deed was made.
Transcriber's Notes:
It would appear that this John Alexander was the son of the Isaac Alexander who wrote his will on 25 Mar 1780 since he had a wife and daughter named Zilpha and the wife is apparently the Zilpha referred to in the petition.
