Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
January Session 1816
Ordered that Sally Alexander be appointed administratrix on the estate of Abraham Alexander deceased and has given bond in the sum of three thousand pounds and give for security Leml. Basnight and Capt. Frederick Alexander.
Ordered that Sally Alexander administratrix of Abraham Alexander deceased have leave to sell the perishable estate of said deceased and make returns to next court.
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Danl. Sawyer Thomas Leigh Robert Pledger and Frederick Alexander be appointed commissioners to lay off to Mrs. Sally Alexander widow of Abraham Alexander deceased her years allowance agreeable to act of assembly and make returns to next court.
April Session 1816
An inventory of the estate of Abraham Alexander deceased was returned into court by his administrator.
Ordered that Sally Alexander be appointed guardian to Michel, Thomas, Hardy, Robert and Abraham Alexander orphans of Abraham Alexander Esqr. deceased and has entered into bond in the sum of twelve thousand dollars, Paul Thoroughgood and Maj. John Alexander her securities.
Ordered that Sally Alexander widow of Abram Alexander deceased be allowed agreeable to the allowance returned into this court at this term by Danl. Sawyer.
July Session 1816
The account of sales and inventory of the estate of Abram Alexander was returned to court by Sarah Alexander the administratrix on oath and filed amount $882.70.
January Session 1817
Ordered that Sarah Alexander be allowed ninety eight dollars for keeping her children & young negroes until first day of January 1817 & the account filed.
Henry Alexander returned to court the right of dower of Sarah Alexander & filed.
October Session 1817
An account of sales & inventory of the estate of Abraham Alexander was returned to court on oath by the widdow of said deceased & filed.
Ordered that Sally Alexander widdow of Abram Alexander be allowed the sum of fifty one dollars for schooling bord etc. of the heirs of said deceased as per account filed.
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Danl. Sawyer & Thomas Leigh audite & settle the accounts of Abraham Alexander deceased with the administratrix & make return to next term.
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Danl. Sawyer & Thomas Leigh divid the personal estate of Abram Alexander deceased so far as respects the widdow of said deceased Nancy Hopkins Luvy Alexander & Charles Alexander so far as respects them equal parts of the estate & make return to the next term.
January Session 1818
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Thomas Leigh & Silby Patrick divide the personal estate of Abraham Alexander deceased so far as respecting the widow of said deceased Nancy Hopkins, Lewcy Alexander & Charles Alexander & make return to next court.
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Thomas Leigh & Silby Patrick audite & settle the accounts of Abraham Alexander deceased with the administrator & make returns to the next court.
April Session 1818
The audited accounts & division of the estate of Abram Alexander deceased was returned into court by Saml. Spruill Esqr. filed.
The last will & testament of Sarah Alexander widdow of Abraham was exhibited in open court & proved by the oath of Robert Pledger Esqr. filed.
July Session 1818
Ordered that John Alexander be appointed guardian to Michael Thomas Hardy Robert & Abram Alexander orphans of Abram Alexander deceased entered into bond in the sum of two thousand pounds Saml. Spruill & Thomas Hopkins securitys.
October Session 1818
Report of auditors in the accounts Sarah Alexander as guardian to the heirs of Abraham Alexander deceased was returned in open court & ordered to be filed.
January Session 1819
Ordered that Samuel Spruill Danl. Sawyer Thomas Leigh Lemuel Basnight & John Midyett be reappointed to divide the lands of Abram Alexander deceased between his legal representatives agreeable to a petition filed at the last term & make report to the next term.
The guardian accounts of the heirs of Abram Alexander also the guardian account of Olive Pledger was returned by John Alexander & filed.
Ordered that John Alexander guardian be allowed sixteen dollars for boarding Abram Alexander from 1 Sept 1818 until the 1st January 1819.
Ordered that John Alexander guardian to the heirs of Abram Alexander sell the beds belonging to said heirs on a credit of six months & make return to next term.
April Session 1819
An account sales of the beds belonging to the heirs of Abram Alexandr deceased was returned to court on oath & filed.
The division of the lands of Abram Alexander was returned to court by Joseph Ansley & filed.
Ordered that Charles Alexander be allowed the sum of seventy five dollars for board & other expenses of the heirs of Abram Alexander viz. Thomas Hardy Robert & Abraham from the 1st day of May unto the 30th August 1818 as per account filed.
Ordered that John Alexander constable bring forward to the next term Michael Thomas & Robert Alexander orphans of Abraham Alexander in order to be delt by as the law directs.
January Session 1820
John Alexander guardian to the heirs of Abraham Alexander deceased returned on oath in open court an account of the hire of negroes & rent of land & a ballance due said heirs $83.29 for the year 1820 account filed.
Ordered that John Alexander guardian to the heirs of Abraham Alexander be allowed the sum of sixty dollars for boarding & clothing Abraham Alexander orphan of Abraham Alexander deceased from the 1st January 1819 to the first January 1820 - likewise the sum of eleven dollars 87 1/2 cents for board & clothing Robert Alexander one of said heirs from 1st of March 1819 to 1st of May 1819 as per account allowed by the court & filed.
April Session 1821
John Alexander guardian to the heirs of Abram Alexander returned on oath in open court an account sales of hire of negroes & rent of lands belonging to said estate & filed.
Ordered that John Alexander guardian to the heirs of Abraham Alexander be allowed sixty dollars for board & clothing Abraham Alexander one of the heirs of said deceased from the first day January 1820 to the first January 1821 as per account filed.
April Session 1822
John Alexander Major returned on oath in open court an account sales of hire of the negroes belonging to the estate of bram Alexander & filed.
Ordered that John Alexander Major be allowed the sum of forty eight dollars for board & clothing Abram Alexander from January 1820 to January 1821 account filed.
The following persons appeared in open court & renewed their guardian bonds as the law requires viz. - Frederick Alexander guardian to Brittanna Dillen Frederick Alexander guardian to Samuel Dillen Hannah Davenport guardian to Fredrick Davenport Nancy Spruill guardian to Nathan Spruills orphans John Roughton guardian Phillis Roughtons children John Alexander Major guardian to Joseph & Polly Melson John Alexander Major guardian Michael Alexander Richard Howett guardian to Elizabeth Howett Richard Howett guardian to Martha Howett Frederick Alexander guardian to Zach. Dillen & Edmund Alexander guardian to Jesse Alexanders orphans all of whom entered into bonds with approved security & their several bonds filed.
July Session 1822
Ordered that Thomas Leigh Fredrick Davenport and Ephraim Mann be apointed to divide estate of Abram Alexander deceased & alot & set off to Thomas Hopkins the distributive share of Michael Alexander deceased one of the heirs of the said Abram Alexander deceased & to whom the said Thomas Hopkins was appointed administrator & make report to the next term.
January Session 1823
Ordered that John Alexander Majr. deceased former guardian to Abram Alexander orphan of Abram Alexander deceased be allowed the sum of sixty dollars for board & clothing the said orphan from first January 1822 to 1st January 1823 as per account allowed by the court & filed.
A division of the estate of Abram Alexander deceased so far as respects Michael Alexander one of the heirs of said A. Alexander was returned to court & filed.
Thomas Hopkins was appointed guardian to the orphans of Abram Alexander deceased who entered into bond with approved security ordered that he recieve the estate of said orphans into his possession & account for the same as the law directs.
April Session 1823
Abram Pledger administrator returned in open court on oath the inventory & account of sales of the perishable estate of John Alexander deceased also inventory of Abram Alexander & William Melsons heirs to whom the said John Alexander deceased was guardian & filed.
Ordered that Frederick Alexander P. Davenport Enoch Hassell & Samuel Spruill be appointed to audite and settle the accounts of John Alexander former guardian to the heirs of Abraham & Thomas Hopkns present guardian & make report to the next term.
July Session 1823
Report of auditors who were appointed to audite & settle the estate of the heirs of Abram Alexander deceased between John Alexander deceased former guardian to said heirs & Thomas Hopkins the present guardian was returned to court ballance due the heirs $530.18 as per account filed.
April Session 1824
The guardian account of Thomas Hopkins with the heirs of Abraham Alexander for 1823 and 1824 were submitted to court.
October Session 1824
On motion it is ordered that Thomas Hopkins be allowed the sum of twelve dollars out of the estate for boarding Abraham Alexander a minor orphan of Abraham Alexander deceased four months from January 2nd 1823 as per account filed.
July Session 1825
Ordered that Ephraim Mann be appointed to Thomas, Hardy, Robert & Abraham Alexander heirs of Abraham Alexander deceased who entered into bonds and gave {blank}.
Ordered that Samuel Spruill, John Thorogood & Edmund Alexander Esqr. be appointed auditors to settle the estate of heirs of Abraham Alexander deceased in the hands of Thos. Hopkins deceased representatives with the present guardian E. Mann.
July Session 1826
Ordered that Edmd. Alexander, John Midyett, & Lemuel Basnight be reappointed to audite & settle the accounts between the administrator of Thos. Hopkins who was the guardian to the heirs of Abraham Alexander and the present guardian Ephraim Mann.
October Session 1827
Ephraim Mann returned the audited account between him as the administrator of Thos. Hopkins former guardian and Ephraim Alexander present guardian to Abram Alexanders heirs.
April Session 1829
Ordered that Eph. Mann be appointed guardian to Robert & Abraham Alexander children of Abraham Alexander deceased.
Jos. Halsy returned the sales of the negroes of the estate of Abraham Alexander sold by an order of court amount of sale $902.71 & that the Clk. retain 2 1/2 percent of the sales and the other costs.

Bond dated 8 Apr 1816 in the amount of twelve thousand dollars appointing Sally Alexander guardian to Michael, Thos., Hardy, Robert & Abraham Alexander orphans of Abraham Alexander deceased, Paul Thoroughgood & Jno. Alexander of H securities.
Court order in October term 1816 and laying off of the dower of Mrs. Sarah Alexander in the lands of her deceased husband Abram Alexander. One hundred and fifty acres joining John Phelps & Isaac Alexander. Also forty acres in Miltail.
Allowance against the estate of Abraham Alexander deceased by Sarah Alexander administratrix in 1816. Filed January term 1817. Forty dollars for keeping two orphans for a year. Ten dollars for keeping one negro woman lying in. Forty dollars for keeping four small negro children for one year. Eight dollars for schooling Thomas Alexander & Michael Alexander for one quarter each. Total of $98.
Bond dated 14 Jul 1818 in the amount of two thousand pounds appointing John Alexander guardian to Michael, Thomas, Hardy, Robert & Abram Alexander orphans of Abram Alexander deceased, Samuel Spruill security.
Account of Charles Alexander for Thomas, Hardy, Robert & Abraham Alexander orphans of Abram Alexander deceased from 1 May until 30 August 1818. Includes board & doctor fees and totalled 75 dollars.
Petition in October term 1819 by Thomas Hopkins & Nancy his wife, Charles Alexander, David Alexander & his wife Lourana, & Michael Alexander, Thomas Alexander, Hardy Alexander, Robert Alexander, Abraham Alexander, infants under the age of twenty one years by their guardian John Alexander stating that their late father Abraham Alexander died intestate in 1815 seized and possessed of four tracts of land, one on the Sound Side Neck, one on the Sound Side, one on the east side of Great Alligator River & Mill Tale Creek, and one tract of swamp joining that on Mill Tale Creek. Petitioners request that a commission be appointed to divide these tracts among them according to act of assembly.

Bond dated 2 Apr 1822 in the amount of two thousand pounds appointing John Alexander Major guardian to Michael Alexander a minor orphan, John Sanderlin & Azeal Johnson securities.
Bond dated 30 Dec 1822 in the amount of two thousand pounds appointing Thomas Hopkins guardian to Thomas, Hardy, Robert & Abram orphans of Abram Alexander deceased, Frederick Davenport & Ephraim Mann securities.
Petition October term 1826 by Thomas Alexander by himself and of Hardy Alexander, Robert Alexander & Abram Alexander by their guardian Ephraim Mann complaining that their father Abram Alexander died seized an possessed of several negroes to the value of ten thousand dollars and of which negroes Nancy, Charles & Louisa children of said Abram have had their respective share by distribution. The remaining negroes are in the possession of Ephraim Mann the guardian of your petitioners. Petitioners pray that a commission be appointed to distribute these remaining negroes among them.
Receipt signed by Ephraim Mann on 9 September reference the petition by Thos. Alexander et al for distributive share of the estate of Abram Alexander. The sum of $121.45 was received as guardian for Abram Alexander and $249.85 as guardian of Robert Alexander as their distributive share from the sale of negroes Cate & child, Late and two children & boy Luke after deducting the expenses of sale.
Petition January term 1829 by Thomas Alexander & Hardy Alexander, of lawful age, and Robert Alexander & Abraham Alexander infants by their guardian and next friend Ephraim Mann showing that by the death of their father Abram Alexander they are entitled in common to negroes Kate & child, Let & child, Lewis & Jim, which they are desirous of dividing equally among themselves. They ask for an order to sell said negroes on a credit of six months and divide the proceeds equally among your petitioners.
Bond dated 28 Apr 1829 in the amount of one thousand dollars appointing Ephraim Mann guardian to Robert & Abraham Alexander minor orphans with Matthew Brickhouse & Alexander Dillen securities.
There are also several documents dealing with recovery of debt to Sarah Alexander administratrix of Abraham Alexander deceased by Terrance Cowell whose securities were Joseph Creef & Robert Holms.
