In the name of God Amen. I, John Ansley of the county of Tyrrell and state of North Carolina, being of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be God for it, calling into mind the mortality of my body, and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament in the manner following, on the tenth day of July One Thousand seven Hundred and Ninety Eight, That is to say -

First and principally of all, I give and recommend my soul to the almighty God that gave it, and my body to the earth, to be buried with a decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors -

Secondly I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved wife all my property of every kind soever for her own use and assistance to raise my younger children, but should she think fitt in her lifetime, to let any of the children to have any of the negroes that I now will to them, she is to do it, but that is left at her own discreation, and at her death or widowhood, I desire a division in the manner following.

I give and bequeath to my grandchildren Soloman, John and Joseph Ansley - children of my son Soloman Ansley, a certain tract of land known by the name of the pessimen ridge bounded as follows, beginning at a pine on the Middle Island, running thence a northerly course by a line of marked trees, to a chestnut oak tree standing on the road, thence westerly along the old pattent line to the Poplar Branch, thence westerly by a line of marked trees to the swamp and from thence a southerly and westerly course by a line of marked trees to the first station -

I also give and bequeath to my son Nathan Ansley a certain tract of land where he now lives known by the name of Addersons Island containing one hundred and fifty acres be the same more or less. Also, part of the body land (or plantation) beginning at the Cypress Branch, running along John Swain's line & Josiah Collin's line from thence along Hezekiah Spruill's line to a pine from thence a westerly course across the land to a forked holly in Benjamin Spruill's line, containing forty one acres more or less - also one half of the juniper swamp laying on the south side of Scuppernong River against a tree known by the name of the great gum - also I give and bequeath to him one negro fellow named Peter, to him and his heirs forever -

I also give & bequeath to my son Joseph Ansley the whole of the manner plantation containing seventy seven and one half acres, more or less, also part of the body land, beginning at a pine on Hezekiah Spruill's line, where Nathan corners, running thence along Isaac Cullifer's line & Benjamin Spruill's line to the forked holly, and from thence to the Cypress Branch, and down the branch to the first station containing forty one acres more or less - also one half of the juniper swamp before mentioned - I also give and bequeath to him a negro boy named Squire and all the working tools on the plantation with my hunting gun -

I also give & bequeath to my daughter Nancy one negro girl named Dinan (?) -

The remaining part of my slaves to be equally divided amongst my children as follows viz. Elizabeth, Sally, Polly, Fanny, Nisey, Milly, Rosey, Prissey and the children of Soloman Ansley to draw one share amongst them -

I also give and bequeath all my move able property (say) with stock of every kind to be equally divided amongst my children as follows viz. - Nisey, Milly, Rosey, Prissey & Joseph & Nancy -

And I hereby make and appoint my loving brother Joseph Ansley and my loving son Nathan Ansley executors to this my last will and testament -

April Session 1799

The last will & testament of Capt. John Ansley was introduced in open court and proved by the oath of John Bateman one of the subscribing witnesses ordered to be recorded.

Personally appeared Joseph Ansley & Nathan Ansley in open court and quallifyed executors to the last will & testament of John Ansley deceased according to due form of law.

October Session 1806

Robert Wynne Esquire and Major Jno. Bateman returned in court on oath in behalf of Nathan Ansley executor of the last will of Jno. Ansley an inventory of all property that was left by Elizabeth Ansley deceased the widow of the said Jno. Ansley -- they also returned an account of sales of the above estate as left after the decease of the said Elizabeth Ansley to the amount of three hundred and twenty six and 1/4 pounds which is filed.

Ordered that James Hoskins Jesse Alexander and Charles Spruill Esqrs. be appointed to divide the negroes of John Ansley deceased and make return to next court.

January Session 1807

The division of the negroes belonging to the estate of John Ansley deceased filed.

Major John Bateman return in court a receipt from the heirs of John Ansley deceased to the executor Nathan Ansley for ten negroes ordered registered.

April Session 1807

Major Jno. Bateman returned in court on oath an inventory and account of sales of part of the estate of John Ansley deceased sold on the 21st November 1806 to amount of 47 pounds, 8 shillings & 3 pence filed.

May Session 1808

Ordered that James Hoskins Charles Spruill and Col. Jesse Alexander be appointed to audite and divide the estate of John Ansley deceased and make return to next court.

August Session 1808

James Hoskins Esqr. returned in court the audited accounts between the heirs of John Ansley deceased and the executors of said deceased.

October Session 1811

Ordered that James Wood John Batman Senr. & Joseph Ansley Esqr. Charles Spruill & Zachariah Eborn divide the lands of Solomon Ansley deceased among the lawfull representatives and also the land left by the will of John Ansley deceased to said heirs and make return to next court.

Summons dated 15 Apr 1804 for Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley & Elizabeth Ansley to appear before a Justice at Richard Wood Esqr. on 13 May to answer the complaint of Jonathan Robinson & David Goodman in a plea of debt for twenty pounds. Signed by Jn. Ansley and witnessed by Joseph Ansley Junr. & Cyprian Goodman. Judgement was entered for the plaintiffs on 12 May 1804.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein William Brickhouse & Fanny Brickhouse his wife acknowledge receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promise to pay their ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Jonathan Roberson & James Freeman are securities.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein Joseph Phelps & Sarah Phelps his wife acknowledge receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promise to pay their ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Hezekiah Jennett & Urijah Phelps are securities.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein John Bateman & Unice Bateman his wife acknowledge receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promise to pay their ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Nehemiah Norman & Frederick Massey are securities.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein John Freeman & Rosannah Freeman his wife acknowledge receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promise to pay their ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein James Ambrose guardian to the heirs of Soloman Ansley deceased acknowledges receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promises to pay his ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Benjamin Spruill & Zebulon Tarkinton are securities.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein Jonathan Roberson & Priscillah Roberson his wife acknowledge receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promise to pay their ratable part of any future claims against the estate. William Brickhouse & John Bateman are securities.

Bond dated 21 Nov 1806 in the amount of three hundred dollars wherein Joshua Alexander administrator of Amilla Alexander deceased acknowledges receipt from Nathan Ansley executor of John Ansley deceased the ninth share or part of ten negroes out of the estate of John Ansley deceased and promises to pay his ratable part of any future claims against the estate. Zebulon Tarkinton & Nehemiah Norman are securities.

There are several documents in this file dealing with a suit between Jonathan Robinson & Nathan Ansley that don't appear to be connected to John Ansley deceased.

Soloman Ansley died circa 1794 (see court and estate files). His administratrix was Zilpha Ansley, his apparent wife. James Ambrose was appointed guardian of the orphans of Soloman Ansley in 1800. Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Zilpha Ansly to James Ambrose on an undetermined date, Ben Spruill security.
