Note dated 24 Jan 1826 in which J. A. Spruill & Jesse Spruill promise to pay Thomas V. Hathaway on order the sum of $132.65 after six months.
Summons issued 24 Jul 1826 for James A. Spruill & Jesse Spruill to appear in court on the fourth Monday in October next and answer unto Thomas N. Hathaway administrator of James R. Bent of a plea that he render unto him the sum of one hundred and thirty two dollars and sixty five cents which he owes and detains to his damage fifty dollars.
Summons issued 26 Oct 1826 for Jesse Spruill to appear in court on the fourth Monday in January next and answer unto Thomas N. Hathaway administrator of James R. Bent of a plea that he render unto him the sum of one hundred and thirty two dollars and sixty five cents which he owes and detains to his damage fifty dollars.
Execution issued 21 Aug 1827 against the goods & chattels, lands and tenements of James A. Spruill & Jesse Spruill by virtue of and execution at the instance of Thomas N. Hathaway administrator of Jas. Bent to satisfy the sum of $132.65 which the said Hathaway administrator recovered against them for debt & interest from 24 Jul 1826 and also the further sum of $10.17 which was adjudged and taxed for him to pay costs of suit.
Execution issued 7 Nov 1827 against one horse (?), two beds and the land where Jesse Spruill lives in favour to the rest of the defendants property, the property of James A. & Jesse Spruill, which was levied on by virtue of and execution at the instance of Thomas N. Hathaway administrator of Jas. Bent to satisfy the sum of $132.65 which the said Hathaway administrator recovered against them for debt & interest from 24 Jul 1826 and also the further sum of $10.55 which was adjudged and taxed for him to pay costs of suit.
Execution issued 8 Feb 1828 against one horse (?), two beds and the land where Jesse Spruill lives in favour to the rest of the defendants property, the property of James A. & Jesse Spruill, which was levied on by virtue of and execution at the instance of Thomas N. Hathaway administrator of Jas. Bent to satisfy the sum of $132.65 which the said Hathaway administrator recovered against them for debt & interest from 24 Jul 1826 and also the further sum of $10.92 which was adjudged and taxed for him to pay costs of suit.
Account of the property of James A. Spruill sold on 26 Feb 1828 for ready money by virtue of executions obtained by Thos. N. Hathaway administrator of Jas. Bent. Total was $153.64 and was all bought by Joseph C. Norcom. Sale included negroe boy Willis for $50, negroe boy Toney for $50, negroe boy James for $41 and James Spruill's right in negroes Taribe (?) and child Jeny, negroe boy Windsor, negroe girl Delia and negroe girl Amanda for $12.
Transcriber's Notes:
James R. Bent was a merchant in Chowan County at the time of his death. There is a large estate file there and similar files to this in other counties attempting to recover debts.
