I Matthew Brickhouse of the State of North Carolina and
Tyrrel County, being of sound mind and memory do make and declare this my last
will and testament in the form and manner following Viz:
1 - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mariah Rodgers negro boy
Spencer, during her life time, and after her death my desire is that said
boy shal go to my granddaughter Dorcas H. Cahoon and her heirs forever.
2 - I give and bequeath unto my grandson Matthew B. Dillen two negroes
named Tapa and Jack to him and his heirs forever.
3 - I devise unto my daughter Joanna Brickhouse and her heirs forever
all my lands except the Peter place the Godwin tract and the great swamp tract
which several pieces I desire to be sold by my executors and the monies arising
from said sale to be equally divided among my heirs at law -.
4 - I also give and bequeth unto my daughter Joanna Brickhouse the
following negroes namely negro man Jack afsd about 40 years man
Nero negro woman Sarah also negro girl named Mary and boy
Noah.
5 - I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Ann Cahoon a negro girl
named Hasty and her increase.
6 - I give and beqeath unto my granddaughter Martha Louisa Davenport a
negro boy named Robin and also the sum of one thousand dollars, and if
the said Martha L. Davenport should die without any lawful heir of her
body then to my heirs at law equally.
8 - I further give and bequeath unto my daughter Joanna Brickhouse one
hundred barrels of corn six thousand pounds of fodder and all of my crop of
potatoes.
9 - The residue of my estate I desire to be sold and equally divided among my
heirs at law.
10 - I hereby constitute and appoint Samuel Rodgers and James
Brickhouse my executors to execute this my last will and testament hereby
revoking all former wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this 17 day of September 1852.

Witnesses Appeared in open court on this the 30th day of October in the year of our
Lord 1857 it being the October Term of Tyrrel County Court. Henry C.
Snell a subscribing witness to a paper writing purporting to be the last
Will and Testatment of Matthew Brickhouse deceased the said last Will and
Testatment bearing date the 17th day of September 1852- The said Snell
testified to its being duly executed before him according to the requirements of
law and it was duly proved that Jos. McClees the other witness to the
said will and testament was dead and that the said signature was his and in his
hand writing and that the said will was suficient to pass the real &
personal estate therein & that he was in a sound and disposing memory.
