Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
January Session 1842
Ordered that Alexander H. Smith administer on the estate of Thomas Crain and that he enter into bond in the sum of one hundred dollars with Nelson Alexander security.
Ordered that John McClees, Nelson Alexander, James Basnight and James I. Pledger lay off to Caroline Crain her years allowance out of her deceased husband's estate.

Bond dated 24 Jan 1842 in the amount of one hundred dollars appointing Alexander H. Smith administrator of the estate of Thomas Crain deceased, Nelson Alexander security.
Laying off of the year's provision for Caroline Crane and family, widow of Thomas Crane deceased on 4 Feb 1842 by Nelson Alexander, James Basnight & John McClees as directed by court order at January Term 1842. There was a deficiency of $46.78 to be paid by the administrator as the law directs.
Transcriber's Notes:
The 1856 will of A. H. Smith, administrator of the above estate, bequeathes to Nancy Crain, daughter of Thomas & Caroline Crain, half his personal estate after his wife's death or remarriage. This indicates that Caroline Crain was his daughter. Nancy is age 8 in the 1850 census of Tyrrell County in the household of Alexander H. Smith and his wife Nancy. Land and the other half of Alexander Smith's personal estate was bequeathed to Benjamin F. Pritchett, son of Kissy Pritchett.
Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Nancy Crane to Benjamin F. Owens on 28 Sep 1858, G. L. Owens security.
