This indenture made and entered into this the 4th day of June 1856 between Thomas Alexander Caroon of the county of Tyrrell of the state of North Carolina of the one part and Clifford Caroon of the county & state aforesaid of the second part. Witnesseth:
That, whereas, I Thomas Caroon being desirous to provide for my wife & also to provide for my grand daughter Ann Caroon; now: For the natural love and affection which I bear towards them, a further consideration of one dollar in hand paid by the said Clifford, I do give, grant, bargain, sell & convey unto him the said Clifford, his heirs and assigns, the following negroes, Jack, Winny, Nan, Ann, Jake, Pomp, Easter & Liddy; nevertheless, for the following uses and purposes. To wit. That the said Clifford will take in possession at my death & dispose of as follows. I wish the said Clifford to set over & transfer to my much beloved wife Sarah if she should be the longest liver, the following slaves out of the above negroes Jack, Winny, Hann, Jake, Pompey, Easter & Liddy, to her sole and exclusive use, to dispose of as she may seem best & to my grand daughter Ann, the negro slave Ann, to her sole & exclusive use, to dispose of as she may seem fit; But should my grand daughter die before she comes of age or without lawful issue, then the said negro Ann to return back to my lawful heirs; now I wish my son Clifford ? into the above trust in all truth & confidence.
