I Thomas Caroon, of the County of Tyrel and State of
North Carolina being of sound mind and memory, but considering the uncertainty
of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last will and testament in
manner & form following, that is to say:
1st - That my .Administrator or executor shall provide for my body a decent
burial, suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends, and pay all funeral
expenses.
Item - I give and devise to my beloved wife Sally, one negro boy a
slave by the name of Jack, and aged about 22 years, for and during the
term of her natural life, in satisfaction for, and in lien of her dower and
thirds of & in all my real estate
Item - I give and devise to my youngest son Clifford M. Caroon, one
slave a negro boy named Jacob aged about eight years, to have and to hold
to him and his heirs in fee simple forever, provided he shall pay the following
claims Viz: Clifford M. Caroons, Patsey Dowdy, Saml. Midgett, Ellis Midgett
& Thomas Midgett, in full up to this date-
Item - My will and desire is that all the residue of my estate, (if any)
after taking out the devices and legacies mentioned, shall be sold and the debts
owing to me collected: and if there should be any surplus over and above the
payments of debts, expenses & legacies, that such surplus shall equally
divided and paid over to all my children or their heirs in equal proportion,
share and share alike to them, and each and every of them their executors,
Administrators, & assigns absolutely forever.
In witness whereof, I the said Thomas Caroon, do hereunto set my hand
and seal this l0th day of June A.D. 1859.
Signed, Sealed & published, and declared by the said Thomas Caroon
to be his last will & testament in the presence of us, who at his
request, and in his presence, do subscribe our names as witnesses thereunto -

State of North Carolina A paper writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of Thomas
Caroon, deceased, is exhibited for probate in open court, and the due
execution thereof by the said Thomas Caroon, is proved by the oath and
examination of Samuel Mann & John A. Pledger the subscribing
witnesses thereto - It is therefore considered by the court that the said paper
writing, and every part thereof is the last Will and Testatment of the said
Thomas and the same is ordered to be recorded and filed -
