January Session 1842
Ashel Owens returned the account sales of negro hire belonging to the estate of William Etheridge for the years 1841 & 1842.
Ordered that Ashel Owens renew his guardian bonds as to Mary Etheridge & John Etheridge heirs of William Etheridge deceased and that he enter into bond of two thousand dollars Abner Alexander Senr. & Matthias Owens securities.

Bond dated 10 Mar 1836 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing Samuel Leigh special administrator of the estate of William Etheridge deceased, Chas. McClees & George H. Alexander securities.
Bond dated 26 Apr 1836 in the amount of four thousand dollars appointing Samuel Leigh administrator of the estate of William Etheridge deceased, Wm. Mann & Benj. Spruill securities.
Petition January Term 1836 by Samuel Leigh administrator of William Etheridge deceased stating that he has assets on hand to satisfy the debts and there remains on hand several negroes - that Harriet the widow of said Etheridge has intermarried with Ashley Owens - that William Etheridge left two children, Mary & Spencer. He prays that a division take place of the negroes.
Court order January Term 1838 that Hez. G. Spruill, Wm. Mann, Benj. Spruill, Abner Alexander & Jno. Midyett divide the negroes
of Wm. Etheridge deceased. Done on 13 Feb 1838 by all but Abner Alexander. Division made to the widow Harriet (now
Harriet Owens, the wife of Ashley Owens) and his two children, Mary & John Etheridge as follows:
Ellie valued at $250 - Lot 2
Reuben valued at $575 - Lot 1
Clarissa valued at $437 - Lot 3
Charity valued at $200 - Lot 2
Dempsey valued at $150 - Lot 3
Total is $1612 and each share is $537.33 1/3
Lot 3 was allotted to Ashley Owens and they have to pay the children $49.66 2/3. The other negroes are left in joint stock for
the children.
Bond dated 23 Apr 1838 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing Ashley Owens guardian of Mary & John Etheridge, orphans of William Etheridge deceased, Mathias Owens & Charles McClees securities.
Note date 1 Jan 1842 in which J. D. Hufton, Chas. McClees & S. S. Simmons promise to pay Ashley Owens guardian of the heirs of William Etheridge deceased on order the sum of $105.22. Witnessed by James J. Pledger. Back of note endorsed to J. J. Lindsey.
Bond dated 24 Jan 1842 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing Ashley Owens guardian of Mary & John Etheridge, Abram Alexander & Mathias Owens securities.
Summons dated the fourth Monday in April 1843 and issued 10 Jun 1843 for Jos. D. Hufton, Charles McClees & Saml. S. Simmons to appear in court on the fourth Monday in July next to answer to Ashel Owens guardian to the use of J. J. Lindsey in a plea they owe $125.22 and detain to his damage $50.
Bond dated 25 Oct 1843 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing Samuel Leigh guardian of John Etheridge, orphan of William Etheridge deceased, John McClees & Nathan Alexander securities.
Petition October Term 1844 by John Etheridge by his guardian, Saml. Lee, said John being an infant, and Thomas Neale and wife Mary, and Jesse McClees who have tenancy in common to two negroes, Reuben & Charity, one half of said Charity being said Neale's and one half being sold under execution to Jesse McClees. They are desirous of said negroes being divided so that each may hold their share in severalty, said Etheridge being entitled to one half of Reuben and said Neale and wife to the other half and said Jesse to one half of Charity. Pray that a sale be made for division in cash.
Account of sale by Samuel Leigh dated 1 Jan 1845 of one half the negroes belonging to the estate of William Etheridge deceased. Sold by order of
the county court and petition for division between John Etheridge my ward and Thomas O. Neal in right of his wife Mary.
Sold at six months credit.
Reuben sold to Samuel S. Simmons for $456 - half of which is $228 due to John Etheridge.
One half of Charity was sold to Jesse McClees for $134 - the other half having been sold for Neale's debts.
Less court charges and commissions of $14.78, John Etheridge is due $347.22 six months from the date of sale.
Bond dated 29 Jul 1851 in the amount of one thousand dollars appointing John McCleese guardian of John Etheridge, orphan, John Sanderson security.
Petition July Term 1857 by John McCleese guardian to Etheridge who states that Samuel Leigh was appointed guardian and entered into bond at an unspecified time in the 1840s and in the amount of two thousand dollars with John Sanderson & John McClees as surety. The said Leigh received the estate of the said ward John Etheridge into his possession amounting to the sum of one thousand dollars. The said Saml. Leigh has since continued to act as guardian, not giving any other bond and departed this life in the month of July and at the present term of court letters of administration on his estate have been granted to Jesse Sanderson. Petitioner prays that a copy of this petition be served upon the said Sanderson administrator and order that an account be taken and decree that he will pay to your petitioner the amount that may be found due.
