Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
April Session 1783
Ordered that Jesse Merritt in behalf of his wife have leave of administration on the estate of John Fox & James Fox and gave bond in the sum of 1,000 pounds specie & qualified John Hoskins & Nathan Bateman securities.
Appeared Jesse Merrit in open court & after an administration on the estate of John & James Fox produced an inventory of the said Foxes estate & ordered to be filed and that Thomas Hoskins John Hoskins and Joseph Pledger & likewise Hezekiah Spruill or either three of them be appointed to appraise and divide the estate of John and James Fox between Jesse Merrit in behalf of his wife Sarah Fox and Rachel Lawrence and a due return make to this court the next term.
July Session 1783
Ordered that Jesse Merrit have administration on the estate of John & James Fox deceased and that Thomas Hoskins Joseph Pledger Hezekiah Spruill and John Hoskins or three of them divide the estate of said John Fox and James Fox deceased between Jesse Merrit in behalf of his wife Ann Sarah and Keziah Merrit Rachel Laurence and Mary Fox and make due return to next term.
Ordered that Jesse Merritt sell part of the estate of John and James Fox in order to discharge debts.
October Session 1783
Ordered that Jesse Merrit retain the property of John Fox in his hands until further orders suggestion being made orphans not dead and that Thomas Hoskins John Hoskins Hezekiah Spruill & Joseph Pledger or either three of them divide the estate of James Fox deceased between Jesse Merritt in behalf of his wife Rachel Larence & Mary Fox & John Fox & make return to next court.
January Session 1784
Hezekiah Spruill John Hoskins & Jas. Pledger returned into open court a division of the estate James Fox deceased between Jesse Merrit in behalf of his wife John Fox Obediah Laurence in behalf of his wife & Mary Fox and ordered to be filed.
Appeared in open court John Anderson Depy Sheriff and exhibited an account of sales of the estate of Thomas Sawyer deceased amounting to 53 pounds, 15 shillings & 5 pence - also an account of sales of part of the estate of James Fox deceased amounting to 5 pounds, 14 shillings & 9 1/1 pence.
Appeared Jesse Merrit in open court and exhibited an account against the estate of James Fox deceased amounting to 4 pounds, 3 shillings & 8 pence 7 & allowed & ordered to be filed.
July Session 1788
Thomas Stewart and Hezekiah Spruill Esquires appointed to audit and inspect and settle the accounts of guardians administrators and administratrix accounts of the deceased estates which is accordingly done as per entrys following to wit - Jesse Merritt administrator of James Fox deceased and find a balance due said administrator of 3 pounds, 15 shillings & 4 1/2 pence filed.
