In the name of God Amen I, John Garrett Senr. of the state of North Carolina & county of Tyrrell being weak of body but of sound & perfect mind and memory thanks be to almighty God, do this seventh day of November one thousand seven hundred & ninety make & ordain this my last will & testament, in manner & form following -

Imprimis, I will that all my just debts & funeral expenses be all satisfied & paid -

Item, I lend unto my beloved wife Sarah Garrett during her natural life the use & occupation of one half of the island whereon I now live including the house & plantation & other improvements to the same belonging, & at her decease I give the same to my beloved son William Garrett to him his heirs & assigns for ever - but in case my son William dies without a lawful heir then my will and desire is his part of the island shall decend to my son Joseph Garrett to him & his heirs for ever -

Item, I give and bequeath to my beloved son Joseph Garrett the other half of the island whereon I now live his part to include the east end of the island one negroe man named Sam & one bead & furniture to him & his heirs for ever - but in case of his death without a lawful heir my will & desire is his part of the island shall descend unto my son William Garrett to him & his heirs for ever -

Item, I give unto my beloved son Benjamin Garrett one negroe man named Jack to him & his heirs for ever -

Item, I give unto my beloved son John Garrett one negroe wench named Wynne to him & his heirs for ever -

Item, I give unto my beloved son William Garrett one negroe boy named Scipio one bead & furniture & one young mare to him & his heirs for ever -

Item, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Nancy Garrett the one half of a tract of land containing about four hundred and forty acres lying on the dismall known by the name of the Flax Patch & Dogwoods to be equally divided between her & her sister Milly when either of them marrys or comes of lawful age one negroe wench named Hannah, one bead & furniture & one mare colt called Phenix to her & her heirs for ever -

Item, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Milly Garrett the one half of a tract of land containing about four hundred and forty acres lying on the dismal known by the name of the Flax Patch & Dogwoods to be equally divided between her & her sister Nancy when either of them marrys or comes to lawful age, one negroe girl named Hope one bead & furniture one chest & one small trunk to her & her heirs for ever -

Item, I give unto the heirs of my daughter Mary Ward one shilling sterling -

Item, I give unto my beloved wife Sarah Garrett one negroe wench named Betty & one negroe girl Pat to dispose of at her death as she thinks fit, & the remainder of the beads & furniture & household furniture not already given I give unto her to dispose of as she thinks fit amongst my children, & I lend unto my beloved wife during her natural life one negroe man named Scipio, & one man Peter, & one wench Cate, & one wench Phillis & the remainder of my estate of every kind whatsoever not already given or bequeathed, and at my wifes death I give Scipio to my son William Garrett & the remainder to be equally divided amongst my surviving children -

Item, I will the money due me from Francis Ward Esquire may be collected by my executors & equally divided amongst my children that is now living -

And I hereby nominate constitute & appoint my beloved wife Sarah Garrett executrix, and my sons Benjamin John & Joseph Garrett executors, of this my last will and testament revoking & disanulling all other will or wills executors & bequests by me before this made ratifying & confirming this & no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I John Garrett Senr. have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal the day and date first above written

Personally appeared in court Edmund Blount Junr & made oath on the Holy Evangelist of almighty God that he saw and heard John Garrett Senr above named sign, seal, publish, pronounce & declare the above instrument of writing to be his last will & testament & at that time he was of sound, disposing mind & memory & at the same time he saw Levi Blount & I. (J. ?) Everitt, subscribing witnesses sign their names thereunto & further saith not
