In the name of God Amen the twenty fifth day of May one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight I Edward Hassell planter of the county of Tyrrell being sick in body but of a sound and perfect memory thanks be to almighty God calling to mind the uncertain state of this transatorey life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it please God to call do make constitute ordain and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following revoking and annulling by these presents all and every will or wills by me made either by word or riting and this only is to be taken for my last will and testament and none other -

Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife her heirs & assigns for ever one bead and furniture one linning wheel one chest one wooling wheel -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Mary Hassell one bead and furniture to her heirs & assigns -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Rebeckah Hassell her heirs & assigns one bead and furniture -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Elisabeth Hassell her heirs & assigns for ever one bead and furniture -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Sarah Hassell one desk to her heirs & assigns -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Edward Hassell his heirs and assigns one table one cross cut saw one whip saw one large pot -

Item I lend to my well beloved wife dureing her widowhood for the purpose of raising and supporting my children without any charge against them the following articles viz. The manner plantation whereon I now live with all the lands belonging to the same - also all the remaining part of my estate except one mair named Fill -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Edward Hassell his heirs & assigns for ever the plantation where on I now live with all the land belonging or joining the same -

Item I give and bequeath unto my well beloved child if a son that my wife is now with child with fifty acres of land lying on Lake Phelps and if the child shood be a daughter the land to be sold and the money to equally divided amongst my beloved Mary Hassell Rebeckah Hassell Elisabeth Hassell Sarah Hassell and the child my wife is now with child with if it is girl -

I leave one mair named Phil to be sold at vendue and the money to be aplied to the use of supporting of my family -

Item I leave ten pounds spec in money to the child my wife is now with child with -

Item All the remaining part of my estate I equally divide after the widowhood of my wife I give to be divided amongst my beloved children Mary Hassell Rebeckah Hassell Edward Hassell Elisabeth Hassell Sarah Hassell and the one my wife is now with child with to be equally divided amongst them their heirs & assigns -

Item I do hereby appoint my well beloved wife Ann Hassell and George Wynne to be my soul executors of this my last will and testament in witness where of I the said Edward Hassell have here unto set my hand and seal day & date before ritten -

Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


July Session 1798

The last will and testament of Edward Hassell was introduced in open court and proved by the oath of Robert Wynne Esqr. one of the subscribing witnesses ordered recorded.

Personally appeared in open court Ann Hassell and quallifyed executrix to the last will and testament of Edward Hassell deceased according to due form of law.

January Session 1803

George Wynne came into open court and quallified executor to the last will and testament of Edward Hassell deceased.

Ordered that George Wynne have leave to sell the perishable part of the estate of Edward Hassell Junr. deceased and make return to next court.

July Session 1803

Ordered that George Wyne be appointed guardian to the four heirs of Edward Hassell deceased viz. Edward Hassell Elizabeth Hassell Sarah Hassell and Ann Hassell and hath entered into bond in the sum of five hundred pounds Jno. Davenport and Joseph Ansley securities.

July Sesion 1804

Ordered that Ann Hassell be allowed eight pounds for keeping her daughter Nancy Hassell from February 1803 until the present time.

January Session 1806

Ordered that Ann Hassell orphan of Edwd. Hassell deceased be bound to Ezekiel Godwin & wife to learn to weave and sew and be educated according to law.

Ordered that Ann Fuller be allowed ten pounds for board and clothing Sarah Hassell one and a half years also she be allowed ten pounds for boarding and clothing Nancy Hassell both orphans of Edward Hassell Junr. deceased and to be paid out of his estate by the guardian of said orphans.

Ordered that Ann Fuller be appointed guardian to Sally Hassell orphan of Edwd. Hassell Junr. deceased in the room of George Wynne and the said Ann Fuller does agree to keep the said Sally Hassell free from any charge Woolsey Hathaway security.

January Session 1808

George Wynne guardian to Edward Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased returned in court the account of the rent of his lands filed on oath to the amount of 24 pounds, 16 shillings & 2 pence.

Ordered that Ann Fuller be appointed guardian to Ann Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased in the room of George Wynne former guardian and has given bond in the sum of one hundred pounds Richard Davis and Frederick Massey securities.

Ordered that Ann Fuller have leave to draw the money out of the former guardians hands which are due to Ann Hassell and Sally Hassell orphans of Edward Hassell deceased.

Ordered that Elijah Warrington Levi Bateman and Robert Wynne Esquires audite the account between George Wynne Ann Hassell & Sally Hassell and make return to next court.

August Session 1808

Levi Batman Esqr. returned in court the audited accounts between George Wynne and Ann Fuller and Sarah Hassell and Ann Fuller filed.

June Session 1809

Ordered that Richard Lucas be appointed guardian to Edward Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell and has given bond in the sum of five hundred pounds ordered also that he be appointed guardian to Elizabeth Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell Junr. and has given bond in the sum of three hundred pounds. {This order was rescinded before court adjourned.}

Ordered that James Hoskins Levi Batman & Robert Wynne Esqrs. be appointed to audite the account between Edward Hassells heirs and George Wynnes administrator and make return to next term.

September Session 1809

Robert Wynne Levi Batman and James Hoskins Esqrs. returned in court the audited accounts between George Wynnes administrator & Elizabeth Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased & report a ballance due to the said orphan of 4 pounds, 11 shillings & 2 pence filed.

Robert Wynne Levi Batman and James Hoskins Esqrs. returned in court the audited accounts between George Wynnes administrator & Edward Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased & report a ballance due to the said orphan of 27 pounds, 15 shillings & 9 pence filed.

Guardian bond dated 29 Jan 1806 in the amount of five hundred pounds appointing Ann Fuller guardian to Sally Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased, Woolsy Hathay security.

Guardian bond dated 27 Jan 1808 in the amount of one hundred pounds appointing Ann Fuller guardian to Ann Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased, Frederick Massey & Richard Davis securities.

Guardian bond dated 27 Jun 1809 in the amount of three hundred pounds appointing Richard Lucas guardian to Elizabeth Hassell orphan of Edward Hassell deceased, Richard Davis & Benjamin Spruill securities.
