December 9, 1823
In the name of God Amen I James Hassell of Tyrrell County who am weak and sick in body but of sound mind and memory thanks to God and knowing that it is apointed for all men to die I make this my last will and testament and first I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the ground to be buried in a Christian like manner by my executors hereafter named and with what worldly goods it hath been please God to bless me with in this world I will and dispose of in the following manner.
Item I gave and bequeath to my two nephews James McAlister and Amos Thoroughgood all my blacksmiths tools to them and their heirs forever and also my juniper swamp up Miltail Creek to be equally devided between them to them and their heirs forever -
I gave and bequeath to my nephew John Thoroughgood my juniper swamp up Swan (?) Creek being one hundred and sixty acres to him and his heirs forever -
Item My desire is that my black man Peter have the liberty of choosing a master and my executors to sell him to them and give a bill of sail for him -
Item My desire is that all the remainder of my estate both rail and perishable be sold at twelve months credit by my executors hereafter named and the money arising from said sail after paying just debts to be disposed of in the follwing manner -
Item I gave and bequeath to my sister Ann Swain one hundred dollars to her and her heirs forever -
Item I gave and bequeath to my nece Flory McAlister seventy five dollars to her and her heirs forever -
Item I gave and bequeath to John Thoroughgood the hole of my waring apparrel to him and his heirs forever -
Item I gave to James McAlister and Amos Thoroughgood twenty five dollars each to them and their heirs forever -
Item I gave and bequeath to my two nephews Joseph and John Hassell fifty dollars each to them and their heirs forever -
Item I leave twenty dollars in the hands of my executors to be by them given to a black woman Plesant -
Item I gave and bequeath to my nephew James Pinkney Hassell two hundred and fifty dollars to him and his heirs forever -
Item I gave and bequeath to my nece Betsey Jackson twenty five dollars to be paid her as she needs it by my executors -
Item All the balance of money that my estate sells for to be equaly devided amongst my heirs at law -
And lastly I hereby apoint my three nephews Amos Thoroughgood James McAlister and John Thoroughgood my executors of this my last will and testament in witness where of I have here unto set my hand and put my seal this ninth day of December one thousand eight hundred and twenty three -

Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
January Session 1824
The last will and testament of James Hassell was exhibited and proved in open court by the oath of John Brinson who also swore that he saw Paul Thoroughgood & Sally Marriner the other subscribing witnesses sign the same as concurring evidences thereto. Same time appeared John Thoroughgood one of the executors therein named & qualified in due form of law. Ordered that letters testamentary issue thereon with a coppy of the will annexed.
April Session 1824
John Thoroughgood Esqr. executor of James Hassell deceased appeared in open court and returned the inventory and account of sales of the propert of said deceased and filed.
January Session 1825
Ordered that Samuel Spruill John Midyett Edmund Alexander & Ephraim Mann be appointed commissioners to audite and settle the estate of James Hassell deceased with his executor.
April Session 1826
Ordered that Ephraim Mann, Saml. Spruill, Leml. Basnight, Jno. Midyett & Edmd. Alexander or any three of them be appointed to audite & settle the estate James Hassell deceased with Amos Thorogood executor of John Thorogood who was executor of James Hassell deceased.

Hassell, James, 1823
Petition December Term 1823 by John Thoroughgood who shows that James Hassell died testate and he was named executor of his will, qualified as such and has taken on the burden of execution of the will. The said James was appointed guardian to the heirs of Joseph Hassell viz. John, Joseph, William James Pinkney Hassell, Affa, Elizabeth & Maria Hassell and the said heirs were equally entitled to an equal distribution of two negroes viz. Eliza & Pleasant and three sevenths of the said negroes have been justly settled for by the said James to and with Affa, Elizabeth & Maria Hassell and that the said James became entitled thereto. Petitioner prays an order from the court for the sale of the same that there may be an equal division of the same.
