State of N. Carolina, Tyrrel County: In the name of God amen- I Richard D. Hassell of said County and State of sound & perfict mind and memory blessed be God but sick in body do this 25 day of October in the year of our Lord 1842, Make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say.

First- my Will and desire is that all my perishable property be sold by my executors herein after mentioned at public or private sale at there discretion and also the control and hiring out of all my negros at public or private sale-

2nd I also leave all my lands & plantation in the hands of my said executors to be rented or sold at there discretion but if they should think proper to sell then they must aply to the county court & have three disinterested free holders apointed by said court by whom a fair valueation being placed on said lands then my said executors or either of them may execute a valid title for the same to the purchaser & not otherwise-

3rd. My will is that my said executors have the controll & guardianship of my two sons Thomas M. Hassell & George W. Hassell until they arrive to the age of twenty one years and then that all my estate be equally divided between them-

4th. I leave my worthy friends & brothers Solomon Hassell & Thomas L. Hassell executors to this my last Will & Testament. Signed & acknowledged by the said Richard D. Hassell in presence of us to be his last Will & Testatment.

Then was the within paper writing proved as the last Will & Testament of R. D. Hassell by the oath of Thomas B. Myers a subscribing witness hereto, who proved that said Hassell signed the same declared it his will- that witness & witnesses hereto signed it in said Hassels presence & at his request & that said Hassell was of sound mind & memory- let it be & is hereby admitted to probate as a Will passing realty & personalty-

January Session 1843

A paper writing was brought into court purporting to be the last will and testament of Richard D. Hassell and the same was proved by the oath of T. S. Myers a subscribing witness thereto who proved the execution of the same by said Hassell that he acknowledged the same as his will and testament and that the said Hassell was at the time of sound and disposing mind and memory and that he witnessed together with H. E. Lewis and Jos. Halsey subscribing witnesses signed the same in said Hassells presence and at his request. It is therefore ordered that said paper writing be and hereby allowed to probate as a will passing realty and personalty. At the same time Solomon Hassell one of the executors came into court and renounces. T. S. Hassell the other executor appeared and qualified.

Account of Richard D. Hassell with doctor Henry E. Lewis from 7 Sep 1841 to 9 Sep 1842. There were many visits to both he and his wife. A son Thomas is also treated several times.

Court order October Term 1844 for Thomas L. Hassell executor of R. D. Hassell, to have leave to sell negro woman Mary belonging to the estate of R. D. Hassell.

Report to the court at January Term 1845 by Thomas L. Hassell, executor of R. D. Hassell, of the sale of negro woman Mary on 25 Dec 1844 at public auction to Thomas Ludford for five dollars.

Petition October Term 1845 by Thomas L. Hassell, executor of Richard D. Hassell, who states that the debts of the estate exceed the value of the perishable property of the estate. There is a negro man slave mamed Bill belonging to the estate. If sold, the proceeds would probably pay off the liabilities of the estate. He prays an order for the sale of said slave.

Bill from George Horswell to the estate of R. D. Hassell for the board & clothing of Washington at 4 dollars per month for 31 months from 18 Jun 1842 to 19 Jan 1845 totalling $124.

There are many documents in this file dealing with the recovery of debts owed by and to the estate.
