I Jesse Hassell of the County of Tyrrell, and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind & memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence, do make & declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows. That is to say.

First- My executrix and executor shall provide for my body a decent burial & pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts, that is owing out of the first moneys that may come to their hands as a just part or parcel of my estate.-

Item. 1st- I loan to my beloved wife Mary Hassell, during her natural life the tract of land whereon I now live, also the Joseph field, with the privelige of rail timber, & fire wood, also I loan to my wife Mary one negro boy by the name of George, her life time of widowhood, I also give her one negro woman Orphy to dispose of as she chooses, to one bed, bedstead & furniture, one cow & calf, her choice, one bureau & trunk which she calls her own, all of which I give to my beloved wife.

Item- 2d- I give and bequeath unto my two sons Jesse S. Hassell and Wm. H. H. Hassell, two negro girls, named Ann & Hanna, to be equally divided between them when, Wm. Henry Harrison Hassell, becomes twenty one years of age. Also I give each of my two sons Jesse & William one bed & bedstead & furniture, I also give them the cattle they now claim. If either of my sons heretofore mentioned die & leave no lawful heir, then in that case the other own brother to be the whole & sole heir, to said negores & stock of cattle, with their increase, also the negro boy George, I give to my two sons Jesse & William.

Item- 3d- After the death of my wife Mary, I give and bequeath to my son Joshua L. Hassell, one tract of land I bought of Uriah Swain, & to his heirs forever.

Item- 4th- After the death of my wife, I give the tract of land whereon I now live, beginning in a pine, Timothy Swaines & my corner, running an East, course, to J. A. McAllisters line the North post, I give to my daughter Nancy forever.

Item 5th- I give to my daughter Sarah one dollar in cash, to her & her heirs forever, in fee simple.

Item 6th- I give and bequeath to my two sons Jesse & William, the South part of the tract of land I now live on, beginning at a pine, the corner tree between Timothy Swain & my lands, running East to John McAllisters line, and lastly hereby constitute & appoint my beloved wife Mary Hassell, & brother J. W. Hassell to be my lawful executrix and executor to all intents & purposes, to execute this my last Will and Testament revoking all other wills whatever, made by me In witness whereof I the said Jesse Hassell, do hereunto set my hand & seal this the 24th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fifty seven.

The foregoing paper writing was offered for probate and upon testimony of Timothy Swain and L. L. Hassell, the subscribing witnesses thereto. it was ordered by the court to be duly proved as the last Will and Testament of Jesse Hassell deced, with all the formalities, to Pass real & personal estate, and ordered to be, and admitted to probate, as such whereupon Mary Hassell, executrix thereto named was qualified as executrix thereto and Joshua W. Hassell, therein named as executor then appeared in open court and renounced his right to qualify as such. Ordered by the court that the same, with this certificate of Probate be recoreded-
