In the name of God Amen This 4th day of October 1794 I John Poole of the county of Tyrrel and state of North Carolina being in a very low state of helth of body but of perfect mind & memory and caling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all men once to dye do make and ordain this my last will and testement and first of all I recommend my soule into the hands of God that gave it nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again at the general resurrection of the last day by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly goods as it hath been pleased God to bless me with in this life I give demise and dispose of in the following manner and form -

I will first that my funeral expenses and just debts be paid by my exors -

Item I leave or lend the use of the manner plantation wheareon I now I now live unto my beloved wife Dorcas Poole during her natral life or widowhood I also give unto my beloved wife Dorcas Poole one fourth part of my land caled the rice patch at Stumpy Creak to her and her heirs and assigns for ever I also give unto my beloved wife six cows and calve and three stears the choice of my stock also one horse caled Dick one mare caled Fenney and coalt Toby to her her heirs and assigns forever together with one fether bed & firneture her first choice -

Item I give unto my daster Hagar Jones and Mary Neel the plantation and land whearon I now live to be devided between them after my wifes dearth or marrige agreable to a line of marked trees beginning at a large perssimon tree standing near the line between William Liverman & John Poole then easterly a derect line through the plantation to a marked beach and to continue that corse to the east end of the pattant the north side to Hagar the south side to Mary to them their heirs & assigns forever -

Item I give unto my daster Ann Hunter five shilings specie to be raised out of my estate -

Item I give the use of and labour of my negro man Sutton to my wife Dorcas during her natral life or widowhood -

Item After my wifes desease I give unto my daster Sarah Jones my negro man Sutton with her paying my daster Mary Neel twenty pounds and to my daster Dorcas two pounds within three years after my daster Sarah ? the sd. negro -

Item I give unto Keziah to my daster Dorcas Brickhouse the first child that my nego Mill shall beare that shall arive to the age of eighteen months to be delivrd her at the sd. time

Item I leave the use and labour of my negro Mill unto my wife Dorcas during her natral life -

Item I give unto my daster Keziah Poole my negro girl Mill after my wifes dearth to be delivred to her with her increase except the child given to my daster Dorcas to my said daster Keziah her heirs and assigns forever - I also give unto my daster Keziah one fether bed and firneture together with one young mare caled Dimond and one writing dersk -

Item I give unto my sons in law Bartlett Jones Robert Jones and Peter Brickhouse all my land called hall--- ridge together with my juneper swamp adjoining Bartlett Jones swamp ? the raster to be equaly devided betwen them to them and theare heirs forever -

Item I give unto my wife Dorcas my son in law Bartlet Jones Robert Jones Peter Brickhouse & Mary Neel one hundred acres of juneper swamp lying between Colefers & Bonnet retch to be equaly devided betwen them to them & their heirs & assigns forever -

Item I give unto my daster Keziah one hundred acres of back land her first choice out of three to her her heirs and assigns forever -

Item I give my daster Mary Neel & Sarah Jones the other two hundred acres to be equaly devided betwen them to them their heirs & assigns forever -

Item I give all the residue of my estate not already given unto my beloved wife Dorcas Poole to her her heirs & assigns forever and I appoint my beloved wife Dorcas Poole and my son in law Bartlet Jones my exortrix & exor and my friend Isaac Meekins trustee of this my last will and testement and I revoke disanul and disalow all other former wills gifts leases or bequaths hither to fore by me made and I acknowledg this and no other to be my last will and testement -

Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


October Session 1799

Ordered that Dorcas Pool be appointed guardian to Kezia Pool orphan of John Pool and give bond and security in the sum of 500 pounds William Megound & John Meekins securities.

February Session 1809

Ordered that Jno. A. Patrick Joseph White Thomas Liverman Justice B. Liverman & Ruben Cohoon be appointed to go with the Surveyor & divide the lands of Bartlet Jones & John Pool deceased between the representatives agreeable to will of deceased.

June Session 1809

John Swain Surveyor returned the division of the land of John Pool Esquire deceased as far as concerns three heirs viz. Sarah Jones Keziah Hopkins & Jeconias Neel.

Division of 100 acres of juniper swamp adjoining William Liverman on 12 Jun 1804 between Darcus Pool, Bartlett Jones, Peter Brickhouse, Mary Neel & Robert Jones agreeable to the last will and testament of John Pool deceased. Commissioners are Stephen Alcock, John Liverman, John Clayton & Thomas Liverman, Surveyor is Wm. Clough and Chain Bearers are William Clayton & Tarte White.

Petition dated February Term 1809 by Thomas Hopkins in right of his wife Keziah and Keziah his wife. States that John Poole and Bartlet Jones were jointly seized of 600 acres on the west side of Alligator River joining Poole's own line, Frying Pan Swamp, Cahoon, Vollivey, James Cahoon, Hillery Baker as described in the patent granted to John Poole & Bartlet Jones on 28 Sep 1791. The will of John Poole devised 100 acres of this land to Keziah Poole who since intermarried with Thomas Hopkins. Bartlet Jones died intestate leaving heirs Olly Jones, since intermarried with Sylbee Armstrong, Thomas Jones, Mary Jones, Barney Jones, Bartlet Jones, Timothy Jones & Elizabeth Jones infants under age. Requesting division of this land.

Division of 300 acres on 19 Apr 1809, late the property of John Pool deceased among Sarah Jones, Keziah Hopkins & Jeconias Neele.


(Transcriber's Notes: Tyrrell marriage bonds show the marriage of Robert Jones to Sarah Poole with bond dated 4 Oct 1784 and security John Poole; that leaves Hagar Jones as the wife of Bartlett Jones; the marriage of Mary Poole to William Neel with bond dated 4 Oct 1784 with John Poole security; the marriage of Dorcas Poole to Peter Brikhouse with bond dated 10 Oct 1790 and Hezekiah Norman security. Additionally, Tyrell Deed Book 5, page 367, cites Darkis Pool and Isaac Meekins as the children of Ann Meekins, widow.)
