In the name of God Amen I Joseph Swift of the county of Tyrrell and state of North Carolina being weak of body
but in sound mind and memory blessed be God for it and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain
this my last will and testament and foremostly I recommend my soul into the hand of God that gave it and my body ? at the
discression of my executors here under mentioned and as for such worly goods as it has pleased God to bless me with I dispose
of in manner and form as follows
first my will and desire is that all my just debts be paid
Item I give and bequeaf to Esther Noland ? Esther one shirling starling to her and her heirs for ever I give and bequeath
to Nancy Noland daughter of said Esther one shirling starling to her and her heirs for ever
Item I give and bequeaf to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Swift one negro woman named Bett and her children
Peg and Charles also a cow and calf
Item I give and bequeaf to Luretta Steley one negro girl named Jude to her and her heirs for ever
Item I give and bequeaf to Swain Swift one negro girl named Bet ? daughter of Fib ? to him and his
heirs for ever
Item I lend the use and improvement of the remainder of my negros after my debts being paid to Capt Joshua Swain
during his natural life
Item I give and bequeaf to my beloved son Joshua Swift my ? estate real and personal as well in New England and it is my
will and desire that my son should come into possession of his estate at the age of 21 years but not to dispose of any of it
till he should arrive at the age of five and twenty years and I do constitute and appoint my well beloved and trusty friends
Edmond Blount Esq. and Even Skinner my exeutors renouncing all other wills heretofore by me made ? this to be my last
will and testament in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and fix and fixed my seal in the year of our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and ninety two

July Session 1792
Ordered that Joshua Swain be appointed guardian to his grand daughter Elizabeth Swift and give bond in 300 pounds John Leary Capt. & Jas. Snell securities.
Ordered that Evan Skinner executor of Joseph Swift deceased pay and deliver up to Joshua Swain guardian of Elizabeth Swift, the legacy left her by her deceased father Joseph Swift.
July Session 1793
Ordered that Joshua Swain be appointed guardian to Joshua Swift son of Joseph Swift deceased and give bond in 2,000 pounds, John Davenport, Jesse Hatfield Senr., Zephaniah Davis & Cornelius Swain securities.
January Session 1794
Ordered that Capt. Joshua Swain be appointed guardian to Swain Swift orphan of Joseph Swift deceased and give bond and security in the sum 300 pounds Joshua Leary John Davenport as security.
