Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


January Session 1819

Administration on the estate of Nathan Spruill was committed to Nancy Spruill widdow who entered into bond in five hundred pounds Danl. Bateman & Richd. Wood securities ordered that letters of administration issue thereon & that she sell the perishable estate of said deceased & account for the same as the law directs.

Ordered that Richd. Wood James Wood Daniel Bateman & Uriah Spruill lay off to Nancy Spruill widdow of Nathan Spruill deceased one years provision out of the estate of said deceased agreeable to act of assembly & make report to next term.

April Session 1819

The account of sale & inventory of the estate of Nathan Spruill deceased was returned to court on oath by the administrator & filed.

Daniel Bateman returned in open court the years provision of Nancy Spruill widow of Nathan Spruill deceased & filed.

January Session 1821

Nancy Spruill was appointed guardian to Thomas Spruill, Tully Spruill Daniel Spruill Olive Spruill Fanny Spruill & Ann Caroline Spruill orphans of Nathan Spruill deceased and entered into bond with approved security ordered that she receive the estate of said orphans into her possession & account for the same as the law directs; the above Justices present & ordered all the heir to be put in one bond which was accordingly done.

April Session 1822

The following persons appeared in open court & renewed their guardian bonds as the law requires viz. - Frederick Alexander guardian to Brittanna Dillen Frederick Alexander guardian to Samuel Dillen Hannah Davenport guardian to Fredrick Davenport Nancy Spruill guardian to Nathan Spruills orphans John Roughton guardian Phillis Roughtons children John Alexander Major guardian to Joseph & Polly Melson John Alexander Major guardian Michael Alexander Richard Howett guardian to Elizabeth Howett Richard Howett guardian to Martha Howett Frederick Alexander guardian to Zach. Dillen & Edmund Alexander guardian to Jesse Alexanders orphans all of whom entered into bonds with approved security & their several bonds filed.

July Session 1825

Ordered that John Haughton Jesse Spruill and Wilson Lamb be appointed auditors to settle the estate of Nathan Spruill deceased with his administrator.

Bond dated 10 Jan 1819 in the amount of five hundred pounds appointing Nancy Spruil administratrix of the estate of Nathan Spruill deceased, Daniel Bateman & Richd. Wood securities.

Bond dated 1 Jan 1820 in the amount of seven hundred and fifty pounds appointing Nancy Spruill guardian of Thos. Spruill, Tully Spruill, Daniel Spruill, Ollive Spruill, Fanny Spruill & Ann Caroline Spruill orphans of Nathan Spruill deceased, Jesse Spruil & Uriah Spruill securities.

Court order issued 29 Jun 1821 to sell all or part of the lands of Nathan Spruill called the Body Land adjoining Benjamin Spruill Esqr. to satisfy an execution against the administratrix of the estate of Nathan Spruill in favor of the administratrix of Selby Spruill for $38.27 plus interest from 23 Mar 1821. Execution was stayed to issue after October Term 1822. Execution reissued 15 Oct 1822.

Summons issued 25 Jul 1821 for Thomas Spruill, Olly Spruill, Fanny Spruill, Tully Spruill, Daniel Spruill & Caroline Spruill, heirs of Nathan Spruill and Nancy Spruill their guardian to appear at court in October Term next to show cause why execution should not take place against the lands of Nathan Spruill to satisfy a judgement obtained against the estate by the administrator of Selby Spruill for $38.27 plus interest from 21 Mar 1821.

Bond dated 2 Apr 1822 in the amount of seven hundred and fifty pounds appointing Nancy Spruill guardian of Thos., Tully, Daniel, Olive, Fanny & Ann Spruill orphans of Nathan Spruill deceased, Richard Roughton & Jas. Wood securities.

Summons 21 Aug 1828 for Nancy Spruill to appear at the next term and renew her guardian bond issued April Term 1822 and exhibit her accounts.


Transcriber's Notes:

Tyrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Nathan Spruill to Ann Phelps on 3 Feb 1803, John Hatfield security.

Ann/Nancy Spruill appears to be the daughter of Edmund Phelps who wrote his will in 1787.

Nathan Spruill appears to be the son of Thomas Spruill who wrote his will in 1808.
