Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions


January Session 1812

Ordered that Sarah Starr and Joseph Starr have jointly the administration of the estate of Henry Starr deceased and they have entered into bond in the sum of five thousand pounds Joseph Ansley Junr. and Jesse Spruill securities.

Ordered that Richard Wood Esqr. John Haughton and Robert Wynne Esqr. be appointed commissioners to lay off out of the estate of Henry Starr deceased to Sarah Starr widdow of said deceased her years allowance out of said deceaseds estate and make due returns.

Ordered that the administrators of Henry Starr deceased have leave to sell the perishable estate of Henry Starr deceased and make due return.

April Session 1812

Richard Wood returned in court the years allowance made to Sally Starr wife of Henry Starr to amount of $193.00 filed.

Capt. Joseph Starr one of the administrators of Henry Starr deceased returned in court on oath the inventory and account of sales of the said deceased filed.

July Session 1812

Ordered that Levi Bateman Esqr. James Wood John Haughton Zachariah Eborn Daniel Bateman Benjamin Spruil Esqr. Frederick Davenport Senr. John Davenport Joshua Spruill Benjn. Bateman Hesekiah Spruill John Marriner with the County Surveyor lay off to Sarah Starr widdow of Henry Starr deceased her thirds of the lands belonging to said deceased agreeable to law & make return to next court.

Ordered that Sarah Starr be appointed guardian to the orphants of Henry Starr deceased to wit, Thomas Starr Mary Starr Lydia Starr & Eliza Starr and has given bond in the sum of four hundred pounds Jesse Spruill & Hesekiah Arnold securities.

October Session 1812

Ordered that the sheriff summon a lawfull jury to lay off to Sally Starr out of the estate of Henry Starr her dower of land and make return to next court.

January Session 1813

Joseph Starr returned in court the account of negroe hire for the year 1813.

William Clough returned the dower of land laid off to Sally Starr out of the estate of Henry Starr deceased in which laying out the commissioners gave to the said Sarah Starr the wharf and ware house and the court are of opinion the laying out is wrong so far as relates to the said house and wharf and the court ordered the said wharf and ware house to be the property of Henry Starr's heirs as before the laying out the above dower.

April Session 1813

Joseph Starr returned in court on oath an account of sales of part of the estate of Henry Starr account filed.

July Session 1813

Joseph Starr returned in court on oath an account of sale of part of the estate of Henry Starr deceased to amount of $630.20 also the sum of $200 bid of the widdow of said Henry Starr.

July Session 1814

Ordered that James Hoskins Esqr. Jesse Alexander & James Wood audite & settle the estate of Henry Starr deceased with the administrator & make return to next term.

Ordered that Richd. Wood be appointed guardian protem to Betsy & Mariah Starr orphans of Henry Starr deceased.

October Session 1814

An account against the estate of Henry Starr deceased in favour of Sarah Starr amounting to 109 pounds, 1 shilling & 3 pence was allowed by the court and the account filed.

The audited account of the estate of Henry Starr deceased was returned to court by James Hoskins Esqr. filed.

An account against the estate of Henry Starr deceased was exhibited in court by Joseph Starr his administrator amounting to 169 pounds, 6 shillings & 3/4 pence and allowed said administrator.

January Session 1815

Ordered that Capn. Joseph Starr be appointed guardian to Elizabeth & Mariah Starr & has entered into bond in the sum of five hundred pounds.

April Session 1820

On motion ordered that a rule be granted to Joseph Starr upon the County Court of Tyrrell to show cause why he will not except his guardianship to the heirs of Henry Starr deceased upon argument it was ? by the court that he shall not resign his said guardianship unless he produces some proper person to except the same & have his accounts settled & approved by the court.

Bond dated 13 Jan 1812 in the amount of five thousand pounds appointing Sarah Starr & Joseph Starr administrators of the estate of Henry Starr deceased, Joseph Ansley Junr. & Jesse Spruill securities.

Bond dated 14 Jul 1812 in the amount of two thousand pounds appointing Sarah Starr guardian of Thos. Starr Mary Starr Lydia Starr & Eliza Starr orphans of Henry Starr deceased, Jesse Spruill & Hezekiah Arnold securities.

Bond dated 10 Jan 1815 in the amount of five hundred pounds appointing Joseph Starr guardian of Eliza & Mariah Starr, orphans of Henry Starr deceased, John Bateman & Danl. Bateman securities.

Summons issued 8 Nov 1816 for William Starr & Thomas Starr & Polly Starr & Lydia Starr & Eliza Starr to be at the next Superior Court of Law in March to show cause wh the real estate descending to them as heirs of Henry Starr deceased to satisfy the judgement recovered against Joseph Starr administrator of Henry Starr deceased by John Boyd at the May 1813 term of the Superior Court of Law. The sheriff returned that they were not to be found in the county.

Execution dated 3 Nov 1817 and issued 29 Jan 1818 against the lands and tenements of Henry Starr deceased in the hands of his heirs to wit William Starr Maria Starr & Elizabeth Starr & Thomas Starr & Polly Starr & Lydia Starr & Eliza Starr for two hundred and fifteen pounds, five shillings and nine pence plus interest from 3 May 1813 which William T. Muse, executor of John Boyd deceased, recovered against Henry Starr and his heirs for debt and interest, plus three pounds, nineteen shillings and three pence for costs.

Execution dated 9 Nov 1818 and issued 23 Dec 1818 against the lands and tenements of Henry Starr deceased in the hands of his heirs to wit William Starr Maria Starr & Elizabeth H. Starr & Thomas Starr & Polly Starr & Lydia Starr & Eliza Starr for two hundred and fifteen pounds, five shillings and nine pence which William T. Muse, executor of John Boyd deceased, recovered against Henry Starr and his heirs for debt and damages, plus three pounds, nineteen shillings and three pence for costs. Lands cited include one piece of land and tenements where Henry Starr lived and died, one small tract adjoining to it called the Cooper Land, one house and lot in Columbia and one small piece near or adjoining Henry Norman's on Riders Creek.

There are many documents relating to suits by and against the estate of Henry Starr deceased for recovery of debts. Only those shown above and a few with similar information have any apparent genealogical value.

Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Capt. Henry Starr to Sarah Davenport (widow) on 17 Aug 1803, Hezekiah Arnold security; also Joseph Starr to Eliza Phelps on 26 Dec 1814, Jas. R. Hooker security.
The will of Mourning Arnold in 1807 cites Sarah Starr as her daughter. Tyrrell County marriage bonds show the marriage of Stephen Davenport to Sarah Arnold on 3 April 1799 with Joseph Arnold security. Court minutes and estate papers for Stephen Davenport in 1799 show that he was deceased by 27 Ovtober 1799 when Frederick Arrington was appointed as his administrator.
