In the name of God amen: The 27th day of February one thousand eight hundred and nine I John Tarkenton of Tyrell County State of North Carolina being very wiak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for, all men to die -- First of all I recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my executors and as touching such worldly estate as it has pleased God to bestow on me in this life I dispose of in the manner following.
I lend the use of manner plantation to Easter Tarkenton my loving wife during her natural life with the woodland thereunto belonging.
Item - I give will and bequeath to my loving son Joseph Tarkenton all my lands and swamp that I possess with my manner planatation after his mothers death to him and his heirs forever.
Item - I give will and bequeath to my loving daughter Elizabeth Armstrong one ewe to her and her heirs forever.
Item - I give will and bequeath to my loving wife Easter Tarkenton two cows and calves one horse two feather beds and furniture the working tools two tables all the beaufat furniture six chairs six head of sheep first choice fifteen head of hogs first choice two iron pots two pot tramels one hand mill one comb one linen wheel one woolen wheel one stear one chest to her and her heirs forever --- Likewise I lend her the use of negro Sam during her natural life or widdowhood ---
Item - I give will and bequeath to my loving son Joseph Tarkenton one cow and calf second choice one bed and furniture second choice one chest one musket first choice to him and his heirs forever I give and bequeath to my loving daughter Ester Tarkenton two cows & claves one small sow one ewe two stocks of bees to her and her heirs forever I give and bequeath to my loving daughter Nancy Tarkenton one feather bed and furniture one ewe and lamb one linen wheel one sow one chest two stocks of bees two cows and calves to her and her heirs forever ---
Item - I give will and bequeath to my loving daughter Sara Tarkenton one feather bed and furniture two heifers one ewe & lamb one sow one linen wheel one chest two stocks of bees to her and her heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my loving daughter Julia Tarkenton one bed and furniture one cow and calf one heifer one ewe and lamb two stocks of bees one sow one linen wheel one lamb to her forever. My will and desire is that all my just debts and funeral expences be satisfied and paid out of my property that is not heretofore given away with the debts that are due me and should there be any more than will satisfy my just debts my will is that it be equally divided between my loving wife Ester Tarkenton & my son Joseph Tarkenton I make will constitute and ordain my beloved brother Zibulon Tarkenton & my son Joseph Tarkenton my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament disanulling all other wills by me made ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament in witness whereunto I ahve set my hand and seal the day and date above written

June Session 1809
Joseph Tarkenton came into court & quallified executor to the last will & testament of John Tarkenton deceased.
Ordered that Joseph Tarkenton have leave to sell the chattel property of John Tarkenton deceased & make due return.
Joseph Tarkenton returned in court on oath the inventory of the estate of John Tarkenton deceased he also returned in court on oath the account of sails of part of the property of John Tarkenton deceased amount of {blank}.
April Session 1817
Ordered that Col. Jesse Alexander Benjamin Spruill & James Hoskins audite and settle the estate of Jno. Tarkenton deceased & make return to next court.
July Session 1817
Joseph Tarkinton returned into court the audited accounts of his father Jno. Tarkinton deceased estate ordered filed.
