Tyrrell County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions
April Session 1824
Ordered that John Thoroughgood be appointed administrator of the estate of Joseph Tarkenton deceased and that he have leave to sell so much of said estate as wil satisfy the debts and incidental expenses.
July Session 1824
The accounts of sales of the estate of Joseph Tarkenton deceased was returned in open court by the administrator and filed.
The commissioners appointed to lay off one years provision for the widow of Joseph Tarkenton made returns in open court & the returns filed.
October Session 1825
Ordered that John Thoroughgood administrator of Joseph Tarkenton deceased have leave to sell one or two negros of the said deceased to make ammount sufishent to pay the balance of the said deceased debts on a credit of six months, and make return to next court.
April Session 1826
Ordered that Ephraim Mann, Saml. Spruill, Leml. Basnight, John Midyett & Edmd. Alexander or any three of them be appointed to audite & settle the estate Joseph Tarkenton with Amos Thoroughgood executor of Jno. Thoroughgood deceased who was administrator of said Tarkenton deceased and make report to the next term.
July Session 1826
Ordered that Ephraim Mann, Samuel Spruill, Lemuel Basnight, John Midyett & Edmd. Alexander or any three of them be appointed to audite & settle the estate of Joseph Tarkenton with Amos Thoroughgood executor of John Thoroughgood deceased who was administrator of said Tarkenton deceased and make report to the next term.
Ordered that James Forbes be appointed administrator de bonis non of Joseph Tarkenton deceased who came into court and entered into bond in the sum of one thousand dollars with Ephraim Mann & Amos Thorogood his securities.
October Session 1826
Ordered that James Forbs administrator of Jos. Tarkenton have leave to sell one negro boy of the estate of the said Tarkenton at a credit of six months.
Elizabeth Tarkenton & James Forbes presented their accounts for board and clothing of the orphans of Joseph Tarkenton viz. John Thomas & Mary for one hundred and two dollars for one year as per account allowed and filed.
January Session 1829
James Forbes administrator of Jos. Tarkenton returned an account of the hire of negroes & rent of land of said estate for the year 1828 & 1829.
July Session 1829
James Forbes appeared in open court & renewed his guardian bond to Jasper/Jesse, Mary, Thos. & Jno. Tarkenton children of Jos. Tarkenton, and gave for security Eph. Mann & Lemuel Basnight.
October Session 1829
Ordered that James Forbes guardian to the heirs of Jos. Tarkenton deceased be allwed 102 dollars each for three years maintenance of the children for the years 1827 & 1828 & 1829.
January Session 1831
James Forbes guardian to Jos. Tarkentons heirs returned on oath an account of hires for 1830.
January Session 1833
James Forbes guardian to Jos. Tarkenton's heirs returned the account of hire for 1833.
Ordered that James Forbes renew his guardian bond to the heirs of Jos. Tarkenton & give for security Ephm. Mann & Enoch Hassell.

Tarkenton, Joseph, 1824
Bond dated 26 Apr 1824 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing John Thoroughgood administrator of the estate of Joseph Tarkenton deceased, Ephraim Mann & Richard Howett securities.
Petition April Term 1824 by Betsy Tarkenton who shows that her husband, Joseph Tarkenton, died seized and possessed of a tract of land lying in Tyrrell County adjoining Britton Hoskins and left four children to wit Jasper Mary Thomas John Tarkenton, infants under twenty one years and prays a guardian be appointed to attend to their interest and that her dower in said lands is allotted to her.
Petition April Term 1824 by Betsy Tarkenton widow of Joseph Tarkenton stating that Joseph Tarkenton died intestate and John Thoroughgood has administered upon the estate. She prays that her year's provisions be layed off.
Laying off of the dower on 20 Jul 1824 of Betsy Tarkenton in the 250 acres on Albemarle Sound of her deceased husband, Joseph Tarkenton by the Sheriff, Henry Alexander and twelve freeholders. Land lies on the Albemarle Sound and adjoins Landford Etheridge. She received 81 acres more or less lying on Albemarle Sound including the dwelling house and outbuildings. Commissioners were John B. Beasley, Fredk. Davenport, Ephraim Mann, Thomas Hopkins, John Midyett, James Pledger, William Pledger, Silby Pledger, Abraham Pledger, Edmund Alexander, Lemuel Basnight & John G. B. Davenport.
Summons dated the fourth Monday in July 1824 for John Thoroughgood, administrator of Joseph Tarkenton, deceased, to appear in court on the fourth Monday in October next to answer a plea of debt by Lemuel Basnight, who obtained a judgement against Joseph Tarkenton on the fourth Monday in December 1823 for $123.41 with interest from 12 May 1823 and a credit of $10 on the same date. It included a stay of execution of 3 months and the said tarkenton died before the stay expired.
Petition dated April Term 1826 by James Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Forbes, formerly the relict and widow of Joseph Tarkenton deceased, showing that Joseph Tarkenton died possessed of a number of negroes and that he left as heirs at law Jasper Mary Thomas & John Tarkenton. They pray an order to divide the said negroes among the petitioners, and the children your petitioners state are all under age.
Bond dated {smudged} Apr 1826 in the amount of one thousand dollars appointing James Forbes guardian of Jasper, Mary, Thomas & John Tarkenton, minor orphans, Ephraim Mann & Amos Thoroughgood securities.
Bond dated 25 Jul 1826 in the amount of one thousand dollars appointing James Forbes administrator of the estate of Joseph Tarkenton deceased that has not been administered upon thus far, Ephraim Mann & Amos Thoroughgood securities.
Summons dated 13 Dec 1826 for Thomas Blount & James Forbes, administrator de bonis non of the estate of Joseph Tarkenton deceased to appear before Ephraim Mann or some Justice of the county to answer the complaint of Lemuel Gregory to the use of Amos Thoroughgood executor of John Thoroughgood deceased in a plea of debt by note in the sum of forty pounds. Endorsed with note dated 16 Dec 1826 saying continued to 3d Saturday in January, not at this place. Endorsed 20 Jan 1827 judgement by the oath of Leml. Basnight for twenty dollars and cost. Defendant sought appeal on 25 Jan 1827 and appeal granted.
Summons dated 24 Apr 1827 and issued 13 Jul 1827 for Baley Davenport, Frederick Davenport & Ephraim Mann to be in court on the fourth Monday in July next and testify on behalf of James Forbes administrator of Joseph Tarkenton in a matter in which Amos Thoroughgood executor of John Thoroughgood is plaintiff and James Forbes administrator of Joseph Tarkenton is defendant.
Bond dated 28 Jul 1829 in the amount of one thousand pounds appointing James Forbes guardian of Jasper, Mary, Thomas & Jno, Tarkenton, minor orphans, Ephraim Mann & Lemuel Basnight securities.
Bond dated 29 Jan 1833 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing James Forbes guardian of Jasper, Mary, Thos. & John Tarkenton, orphans of Joseph Tarkenton deceased, Ephraim Mann & Enoch Hassell securities.
Bond dated 28 Jul 1835 in the amount of two thousand dollars appointing James Forbes guardian of Jasper, Mary, Thos. & Jno. Tarkenton, orphans of Jos. Tarkenton deceased, George H. Alexander & Richard A. Meekins securities.
Petition October Term 1836 by James Forbes in right of his wife, Elizabeth, Jasper P. Tarkenton of full age, and of Thomas, Mary & John Tarkenton, infants, by their guardian James Forbes aforesaid, who state that they are tenants in common of the following negroes, viz. Anthony, Meriam, Pleasant, Tamor, Gelico, Jordan, Bill, Dave, Sally & Lavinia, and petitioners James & Jasper are desirous of effecting a division of the same and having one fifth laid off to each.

Total value of $3975 results in a $795 share for each. John Tarkenton pays Jasper Tarkenton $80. James Forbes pays
Jasper Tarkenton $15, Thomas Tarkenton $45 and Mary Tarkenton $120.
Bond dated 24 Jan 1837 in the amount of five thousand dollars appointing James Forbes guardian of Mary, Thomas & Jno. Tarkenton, orphans of Jos. Tarkenton deceased, William Mann & Lemuel Basnight securities.
Warrant dated 2 Apr 1840 for Frederick Hayman, Richard A. Meekins & Elijah P. Melson to be at Benj. Spruill's store on 4 Apr 1840 to answer the complaint of James Forbes guardian of Thomas Tarkenton to the use of Jasper Tarkenton in a plea of debt due by note in the sum of $90.25 with interest from 1 Jan 1838. Note dated 1 Jan 1837 for 12 months.
Summons dated 10 Oct 1844 for John McClees, administrator of Nelson Alexander deceased, Abner Alexander, William Morris & John H. Combs to appear before a Justice of the Peace at Fort Landing on the 2nd Saturday in October 1844 and answer to the complaint of James Forbes, guardian of the heirs of Joseph Tarkenton deceased to the use of John Tarkenton for the sum of $73.12 by note with interest from 9 Jun 1840.
