{"id":313,"date":"2010-04-05T15:58:26","date_gmt":"2010-04-05T22:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ncgenweb.us\/wake\/?p=313"},"modified":"2010-04-05T15:58:26","modified_gmt":"2010-04-05T22:58:26","slug":"those-kitchin-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/wake\/those-kitchin-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"Those Kitchin Girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yearbook photos are a great way to capture details of your ancestors. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been going through a number of the North Carolina yearbooks that have been added to the Internet Archive and sometimes I am particularly struck by a photo.<\/p>\n<p>This weekend, while going through the yearbooks for Meredith College , I noticed that there were three girls, all from Halifax County, by the name of Kitchin. \u00a0I was struck by the photo of one in particular before I even looked at the name &#8211; that of Musette Kitchin. \u00a0Then, in the next couple of volumes for the college I found two more Kitchin girls. \u00a0I wondered who they were?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/wake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/KitchinGirls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-316\" title=\"KitchinGirls\" src=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/wake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/KitchinGirls.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/wake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/KitchinGirls.jpg 934w, https:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/wake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/KitchinGirls-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 85vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These photos of the ladies are from the <a href=\"http:\/\/ncgenweb.us\/nc\/bookshelf\/yearbooks\/\" target=\"_blank\">1928, 1929, and 1930 yearbooks for Meredith College<\/a> (then called Baptist Female University). \u00a0Musette was a daughter of former Governor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taneya-kalonji.com\/family\/getperson.php?personID=I1022&amp;tree=6\" target=\"_blank\">William Walton Kitchin<\/a>. \u00a0Hesta &amp; Pauline were sisters, her first cousins; their father was William Walton&#8217;s brother, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taneya-kalonji.com\/family\/getperson.php?personID=I1031&amp;tree=6\" target=\"_blank\">Claude Kitchin Sr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the process of researching them to reconstruct the tree and see how they were related, I learned that Hesta &amp; Pauline&#8217;s mother is related to one of my family&#8217;s slaveowners &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taneya-kalonji.com\/family\/getperson.php?personID=I1&amp;tree=16\" target=\"_blank\">Kemp Plummer Battle<\/a> (former president of UNC-Chapel Hill). \u00a0Their mother Kate Mills Kitchin is a great- granddaughter of Catherine Ann Battle Wesley who was a sister to Kemp&#8217;s father, William Horn Battle. \u00a0 These types of connections are interesting to come across.<\/p>\n<p>Yearbooks can help add great detail to your family tree. \u00a0I wonder if Pauline&#8217;s family knows about her garnering the superlative for &#8220;Most Poised&#8221; ? \u00a0You&#8217;ll find these yearbooks linked from the<a href=\"\/wake\/education\"> Education page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wake\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/KitchinPauline_poised.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"492\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">1930 Superlatives - Baptist Female College<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yearbook photos are a great way to capture details of your ancestors. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been going through a number of the North Carolina yearbooks that have been added to the Internet Archive and sometimes I am particularly struck by a photo.
