Affidavit and Schedule of JAMES ROSE |

On this 4th day of February 1824 in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the County of Wilkes in the State of North Carolina being a
court of Record, personally appeared JAMES ROSE aged seventy one years resident in Grayson County in the State of Virginia who being duly sworn according to
Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the Provision made by the late Act of Congress entitled an Act to provide certain
Persons engaged in the land and naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War; that he the said JAMES ROSE enlisted for the Term of three
years about the first day of September 1777 in the State of Virginia in the Company of Artillery commanded by Captain JOHN MAZARD of the Regiment commanded
by COLONEL MUTER or MOOTER and afterwards by COLONEL MUHLENBURG in the line of the State of Virginia in the continental Establishment, that he continued to
serve in the said corps about one year and was transfered to the Regiment commanded by COLONEL MOODY, and continued to serve untill September 1780 when he
was discharged from service at Little York Town in the State of Virginia; that he afterwards entered into the service of the United States as a substitute
for another man, for Eighteen months and was at the Battle of Gilford Court House in North Carolina in the year 1781, but was not in the battle being one of
the guard of the Baggage waggons in consequence of being lame with a sore leg; And that he is in reduced circumstances & stands in need of the assistance of
his Country for support and has no other evidence now in his power of his said service except the annexed affidavit of JOHN HOWARD of Salisbury in the State
of North Carolina; And in pursuance of the Act of the 1st August 1819 I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day
of March 1818, and that I have not since that time by gifts, Sales or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof, with intent thereby so to
diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress entitled an Act to Provide for Certain Persons engaged in the Land, Naval Service
of the United States in the Revolutionary War, passed the 18th day of March 1818 & that I have not nor has any person in trust for me, any property or
securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed, Viz, One
cow and calf, one horse twelve years old, two sows and six pigs, one ax, one weeding hoe. This deponant further saith that he is of no trade or occupation
whatever, and is a pauper and from age and infirmity is totally unable to pursue any occupation for a maintenance, that he has no family but his wife MARY
ANN, aged about one Hundred year who is very infirm, and one great grandson named JOHN aged about six years. This deponant further states that the CAPTAIN
JOHN MAZZARD who enlisted him was a foreigner he believes a German or Hessian who usually called him ROSS instead of ROSE, but that his real name is JAMES
ROSE. |
