Old Salem

Old Salem

Established in 1766 on a 100,000 acre area of land known as the Wachovia tract. Old Salem was the central town with four outlying areas, one of which was Bethabara, established in 1753 as a transitional town while Old Salem was being built.

Eventually Old Salem was the largest Moravian settlement with Bethabara, Bethania, Friedburg and Friedland being the smaller outlying, rural communities.
