The listing of Confederate soldiers are missing the following ones that I have researched and copied their files at the Archive’s in Washington, DC:
1. JOHN W. JONES, son of JAMES FRANKLIN JONES and REBECCA SAWYER JONES. Private, enlisted at South Mills at age of 18, July 25,1961. Captured at Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862, and paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21, 1862. Exchanged on August 1862. Present until wounded at Morris Island SC. Transferred to Navy by special Order 309/2 on December 30, 1863 (interesting and I am searching for the order with no luck in DC on microfilm). Rejoined the 8 Reg’t. Company A in November /December 1863 until killed near Drewry’s Bluff, VA on May 14, 1864. Write-up form Vol 4, page 528, of North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865 A Roster dated 1973 from NC Archives in Raleigh. He was younger brother of William Sawyer Jones who is my great grandfather.
2. JOHN WHITEHURST, born in Camden County and enlisted at age of 35 at South Mills to Capt. HUGHES Company of 32 NC Inf. on May 30th, 1861.
3. SAMUEL WHITEHURST, enlisted at Shiloh, Camden County on August 20, 1861 in Company H of 32 Reg’t North Carolina Troops. Captured at Hattress and exchanged on February 1862.
4. WILLIAM WHITEHURST, enlisted in Capt. HUGHES Troop of 32 Reg’t of NC Troops on May 30, 1861 in South Mills. As part of Company B, he was captured at Spotsylvania VA on May 10, 1864 and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland and then transferred to Elmira New York on August 6, 1864. He died as a POW on April 2, 1865.
A book at the Wilmington NC Library had either John or Samuel also dying as a POW in New York. Somewhere in my cleaning out of company files, I lost my copy of the page in the 32 Reg’t book. The website of the Union Camp had the last name listed as dying. I have microfilm copies for the rest of the above data.
