  1. Hi, all. Looking for any information on the COOK family of Camden County: Specifically, a Mourning COOK, b. about 1756 and d. 1832. I think her father was Lemuel COOK, who might have been a doctor. Mourning married Solly/Solley NASH 23 Sep 1774, their Pasquotank Co. marriage bond says, with bondsman Levi BELL and witness Miles GALE. Any insight or information on the COOK family so appreciated. Thank you.

  2. Camden ancestor-mystery is one “Elder” Thomas ETHERIDGE b.1752 (Currituck), d. June 14, 1824 (Camden). He was a Baptist preacher ordained in 1785 at Shilo Baptist Church, and went on to found Sawyer’s Creek Baptist church in Camden in 1790. Our family bible records give Tom’s wife as Achsa SIVILS, and one of his daughters was also named Achsa (Etheridge). Achsa Etheridge married Mark BOUSHALL UPTON, b. Jan. 21, 1816, d.>1870, (from whom I descend). Tom’s 1824 will, however, lists his wife as Chloe (SANDERLIN? b.1796, d.1828), and one of his daughters (by her?) also named Cloey. My guess is Chloe was Tom’s second wife, Achsa his first. Tom married Chloe “<1818”, and fathered additional children with her, so that should put Achsa’s death <1818. I found the Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church death records listing “Brother” Thomas Etheridge’s death in 1824, but neither Achsa’s or Chloe’s. Here my Sivils trail goes cold. Would appreciate any help on Achsa's birth, death, parents, relatives, origins. TIA

  3. I’m related to JAMES PEARCE son of SAMUEL PEARCE and BETTY SIMMONS. He was born in Little Compton or Warren, Rhode Island in 1765. James’ siblings were Phepe, Priscilla, Jeremiah, Joseph, Samuel, Mary, Abigail, and John. This lineage was in R.I. in the early 1600. Betty Simmons’ lineage goes back to Richard Warren and John Alden who were on the Mayflower.

    James Pearce moved to South Mills, Camden County, N.C. in the early 1790s and married SARAH McBRIDE. I think they had at least these children: Poly b 1796, John b. 1800 – d. 1875, Ira b 1805 – d 1876, Samuel b. 1812 – d 1876, Jeremiah Simmons b. 1817 – d. 1869, and Elisha.

Some of the R.I. sources indicate that James’ brother John lived with him in N.C. for 2 years A John Pearce married POLLY MCBRIDE in N.C. He apparently moved back to Warren R.I. around 1794 when she died.

John, Samuel, Jeremiah and Poly moved from South Mills to Tennessee and Mississippi around 1830. Samuel, my GGGrand father, stayed in Mifflin, Henderson county, Tennessee. John lived in northern Mississippi for several years then moved to North East Arkansas. Jeremiah lived in Dyre county, Tennessee for several years. John and Jeremiah were in Independence county Arkansas around 1850.

One of Samuel’s sons (Jeremiah Dillon Pearce – my G-Grand Father) moved to Lonoke, Arkansas around 1868 where my Grand Father, Hubert Edward Pearce was born.

I have extensive data on the R.I. Pearce family as well as John, Samuel and Jeremiah in a Family Tree Maker file and on Ancestry that I can share.

Does anyone have any data Poly or John?

  4. I am looking for a Carrie Kight. She married Asa Adams. Her approx. birth date is about 1795 and she died at around 32 years old abt 1827. I have found hundreds of Kights in the area near her time, but no mention of a Carrie or Caroline or Carolyn. They ended up in Georgia. She had at least three children one of which was Kinion Adams. I cannot find any information on Kinion’s wife Elizabeth Buckner either.

  5. I am descended from Rufus D Burgess and Virginia Webster Burgess. I would be interested in any information about the Burgess family in Camden County!

  8. I am looking for the parents of Joseph Gray who married Mary Woodhouse after the death of her husband Lemuel Sanderson. Joseph and Mary moved to Currituck County, where they bought land on Churches Island. I find Joseph as a Witness to a deed in Camden in 1780 along with John Gray who could be Joseph’s brother or father. Any help would be so appreciated.

  9. LURRY/LEARY: I descend from Samuel Forbes LEARY/LURRY born 1842 in Camden County. He was the son of an Evan LURRY (born about 1800) and Elizabeth FORBES (born 1803). Who was Evan LURRY’s father? Was it Evan LURRY Sr.? Has anyone traced this line back to John LURRY or further back in time?

    1. I am descended from Evan Lurry (1800) and Elizabeth Forbes (1803). Evan Lurry:s father was John Lurry born 1778 (?) It is my understanding that the name Evan is Welsh for John which could be causing some of the confusion. If you have further details on this line please contact me. Anything on Elizabeth Forbes?

      1. There is information on Lurry and Forbes in North Carolina bible records compiled by Spence & Shannonhouse

    2. William Leary born by 1755 died by August 1822 married Leah Freeman March 24 1778. Children are Seneth, Nancy Ann, Frusannah, John, Thomas, Charlton. This information is in Cornelius Leary Descendants of the Albemarle Area. katherinesmith1962@yahoo.com

  11. I am a descendent of MOSES SPENCE. HE WAS BORN AROUND 1821

SOLD TO SAMUEL SPENCE. PLEASE HELP WITH ANY INFO. YOU HAVE ON HIS SIBLINGS.

  12. TARKINGTON I’m looking for the book written by Thalia Tarkington Jones entitled “Legends and Truths of the Tarkington Family”
The author was once president of the Camden Co Historical Society.
Need to find the parents of Matilda Tarkington who married Howell Peebles. She was born 1798.

  13. I am looking for any info on ELIZABETH LEARY or WILLIAM KIGHT. They had 2 children I can find.. FLORENCE KIGHT [ she was my great-grandmother ] IREDELL KIGHT [ my great aunt ] They were both illegitimate FLORENCE KIGHT married ALFRED SAWYER

    1. The N.C. Bastardy Bonds lists Iredell Leary Kight as born to Betty Kight, probably Elizabeth Kight. Usually bond is purported father, but no info other than Betty on this one. Note the 1870 Census has Elizabeth Kight, age 33, Missouri Kight, age 5 and Florence Kight age 2. Iredell Leary Kight is buried at West Lawn, Missouri Kight married Wilson Harrison 10/16/1879 then seems to disappear, Florence married Alfred, and Iredell remained single. Elizabeth Kight was born 4/29/1937 and died 1/8/1901- buried in Alder Branch Cemetery. The 1870 Census had her living next to Thomas Kight, age 31 (possible brother?) while the 1850 Census had her living near Susan Kight, born 1830 but probably 1820 (mother?).

      1. Susan Kight was actually Elizabeth Kight’s older sister (1834-1864/66). Susan (age 20) and Elizabeth (age 12) are on the 1850 census in the household of Jesse C Bell (age 36) with his 3 sons. Both Susan and Elizabeth were orphaned by 1850. Susan ended up marrying Jesse Bell in 1851.The girls’ father, Dempsey Kight died in 1845 and their mother, Elizabeth Susan Wright Kight died in 1848. These parents left 11 children, including 8 minor children ranging in age from 3 to 20. Nathaniel B. Perkins took in Caleb Kight, age 13, in the 1850 census. Abby Kight, age 17 and William Kight, age 15 were with their older married half brother Asa and his family on the 1850 census. I don’t know where Thomas (age 10), Zachariah,(age 9), Harrison (age 8) and Angelica (age 5) in 1850 were. I found William, Abby, Caleb, Asa, Susan and Angelica on the1860 census, but could not find Elizabeth.
Then of course the Civil War hit in 1861 and the whole area of Camden and Pasquotank Counties was in a turmoil. Many of the men, who were mostly farmers, left to join the army, leaving the old, the young and the women behind. The battle of Elizabeth City left the town in shambles and the Union Army occupied the area and kept the town under marshal law. All of the locals were forced to sign a loyalty oath including the women and they had to register with the military command. I don’t think it was a good time to be a young unmarried woman in that area.
The next time I find Elizabeth Kight is on the 1870 census, living in a house next to her brother Thomas ( a farmer), his wife Chloe Needham Kight and their 5 year old son. Elizabeth is head of household with a 5 year old daughter named Missouri Kight and a 2 year old daughter named Florence. No one else is listed in the household.
What happened ??? is a good question, but one which no one seems to want to talk about. Elizabeth ended up with two more daughters of unknown fathers. Three of her 4 daughters married and one remained single. I never found her on another census. Elizabeth Kight died in 1901 and is buried in Alder Branch Cemetery along with her brother Caleb Wright Kight and his wife Aby. Her daughter Florence named one of her own daughters Elizabeth Kight in honor of her mother.
        Still looking for answers,
        Judy

        1. I descend from Angelica Kight and from Elizabeth Kght by two lines. You can find Zacariah Kight and Thomas Kight living with H. Burgess and Mary Burgess in 1850 in the Camden County Census. I have never found Anjelica in the 1850 Census.

          1. 1860 census of Camden County, NC page 16, shows Angelica Kight, line19. On line 14 is Susan, maybe her sister. Evan Kight Leary Jan 9 1878-Sept 8 1943, was my mother’s grandfather.

        2. Julia, Florence was my wife’s great grandmother. Some of the documentation is incorrect as it was completed by relatives who either did not know or did not want to document that Betty never married. There are also errors in the census records. Betty (April 1837-Jan 1901) was very poor and some of her children lived in the households of others. Iredell lived with her sister Florence and Alfred in the 1920s and she worked at Alfred’s store as a bookkeeper. Later she lived with Florence’s daughter Loraine. Are you on the Camden County Memories Facebook page? A photo of Florence has been posted there in the past; I don’t know if it’s still there. If you post on the page, I’m sure you will gather much more information.

    2. Vicki, Florence Kight is my great-grandmother too . Her mother Elizabeth Leary had 4 daughters. The first, Missouri Kight was born abt.1862: father was listed as S.B. Gregory on her marriage certificate. There was a Samuel Benjamin Gregory in the county of the approximate age. The second child was Florence Kight, born 1779, father given on death certificate was William Kight. I believe he was William Dempsey Kight, b. 1833, son of Dempsey Kight. The third daughter was Claudie Kight, b. 1871, no father listed on her death certificate. The fourth daughter was Iredell Kight (our Great Aunt Dell). There was no father given on her death certificate either. I am currently trying to sort things out with cousins from the Theis family who have a lot of Kights in their family tree. in order to trace our family back along the Kight line. I will let you know what I find out. Judy

      1. Julia, I descend from Claudia KIGHT RICHARDSON. Her death certificate lists her father as Nathian KIGHT. Family legend has it that her father was a Nathan Palmer.

      2. Update here. I found a court record that a jury in Camden County found that Elizabeth Kight’s daughter, Claudia Kight, was the daughter of Elijah Palmer. I have confirmed it by DNA also.

    3. Yesterday I found a Camden County, NC. marriage license dated Jan 6, 1886, for Florence Kight, age 17, and Alfred Sawyer which indicates Florence’s mother was Betsy Kight (living) and her father was Thos. James (deceased). The mother gave consent for the marriage. This seems to be in conflict with the information on Florence Kight Sawyer’s death certificate, which information was given by her daughter, Iredell Kight.

I am inclined to believe the information on the marriage license because it was given within 17 years of Florence’s birth by Florence herself. This would indicate that Florence’s mother Betsy Kight was a Kight by birth. She was perhaps a daughter of Dempsey Kight and sister to William. ???? I have DNA matches at the 3rd to 4th cousin level with Kight which would support this.

  15. I am researching my great-great-great grandfather TULLY SAWYER. He was born in 1812 or 1815 in North Carolina. The first records I have for him are from 1840 in Southeast Arkansas, right on the Mississippi where he died. I do not know his parents names or where in North Carolina he comes from. I believe he had a sister named MARTHA SAWYER who would have been born in 1817 or 1820, also in North Carolina, that emigrated with him. I have found a will for a TULLE SAWYER from the late 1770’s that perhaps was his grandfather (TULLY/TULLE) doesn’t seem to be very common) that was from the northwest part of North Carolina that leaves a boat to his son JOHN. My ancestors oldest son is named JOHN T SAWYER, then he had a WILLIAM CC SAWYER, then a WILEY T SAWYER (if his sons’ names can be used as any hint to his father’s name). Otherwise, I have hit a dead end. I would really love to find out TULLY’s parents names so I can continue tracing my ancestry, but have not been able to find any concrete link between my ancestor and any of the SAWYERS in North Carolina.

Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I am happy to share anything I have. I am currently checking passenger and customs lists to see if he emigrated to Arkansas via boat through the New Orleans port. He had considerable land holdings on the Mississippi just north of the Louisiana border, so I am hoping he might of arrived that way. So far, I have not found any boat that came directly from a North Carolina port. Do you have any knowledge of the maritime routes? Perhaps it was customary to stop in Cuba or along the Atlantic coast before making their way into the Gulf that would be listed as the departure port?

    Again, anything would be appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Kendra Baker McKeon

    1. If you Google search “generations The Sawyer Family starting with John B Sawyer”, I think you’ll find all the names you are looking for.

  16. I have been trying for twenty years to find the parents of Malachi Sawyer. I would really appreciate any help you could provide.

Malachi was born 1804 -1810, Married Elvia Eason and lived in South Mills. Died 10 December 1884

MALACHI and ELVIA had at least 7 children.

    ELVIA died about 1871.

On January 3, 1874, MALACHI married for the second time to FANNY SAWYER JONES. His marriage license names THOMAS and NANCY SAWYER as his parents. This information however was given by ISAAC MEGGS, not MALACHI. ISAAC was the brother of MALACHI’S daughter in law LOVIE MEGGS SAWYER.

I have searched wills, census reports and “Wanted Posters” without success. I have not been able to find a THOMAS and NANCY that fits the right time frame or make any connection to MALACHI! I have found MALACHI selling and buying land with a ZAIL (ZALE) SAWYER. ZAIL is listed in the census of 1790, 1820, 1830 and 1840. Died mid 1840’s. He lived near MALACHI and maybe an older brother or Father!?

  17. I have been trying to tie my 3g grandfather, REV. JEREMIAH ETHERIDGE, b.ca.1780-b/4 1843, to his father. Who, I believe, was THOMAS ETHERIDGE SR. of Camden Co., as shown on the 1790 census.

JEREMIAH married SARAH/SALLY LURRY FORBES abt.1810-13. He and Sally sold a farm in Camden County in 1813 and moved to Currituck and on to Pasquotank by 1825. He was the pastor of the Elizabeth City First Baptist Church while in Pasquotank. This is where his trail grows cold and I can’t find his place or time of death.
    Russell,

The following information was copied from the Currituck County website.

    November Term 1819

    29 Nov 1819
Ordered that JEREMIAH ETHERIDGE be appointed guardian to JOHN BAXTER orphan of JOHN BAXTER Senr. Dec. Who entered into bond with WILLIAM WILSON

    November Term 1823

    Nov. 1823
CARTWRIGHT BELL named as one of the Justices
ISAAC BAXTER named paymaster for the militia who guards the jail
JEREMIAH ETHERIDGE petitions the court to sell certain property belonging to JOSEPH BAXTER orphans. Ordered that the pray of the petition be granted.

Please Email any information you have/find on this family. All data will then be added to this page.

    Thank You.

  18. I am searching for the parents and spouse of MARTHA BRITE in Camden Co. as early as 1779 and as late as her death in 1825.

In 1779, there is a Deed of Sale from WILLIAM TAYLOR to Elizabeth Old and witnesses were Anson Brite, MARTHA BRITE and Samuel Brite. It was registered in Camden Co., NC 10 Apr. 1779. Anson and Samuel are possibilities for her husband and we wonder if William might be a relative ot Martha.

MARTHA had at least 2 children, John and Charity. She gave land to son, John in 1796. In her will, registered in 1825, she mentioned her
daughter, Charity Williams and grandchildren, Fanny, William and Jane Williams. No husband for Martha was mentioned in either of those documents, so he was probably deceased before 1796.

Next, in Camden Co. in 1838, Charity Williams gave land (a gift deed)
to her daughter, Fanny Sawyer – “lands that Henry Brite bought of EVAN TAYLOR”. So here’s another Taylor connection and Henry as a possible husband for MARTHA.

And finally, in Camden Co. in 1848, Fanny Sawyer sold land (same land?) to Anson Brite (same as 1779 or a later generation?) “her interest in ESDRAS TAYLOR land”. So still another TAYLOR connection.

Does anyone know of TAYLOR wills, etc. that might shed more light on a
BRITE/TAYLOR connection for MARTHA? Thanks for any help over this brick
    wall!

  60. I am a direct descendant of the SPENCE family of Perquimans, Pasquotank and Camden Counties. My line of descent is directly from ALEXANDER SPENCE, who died in Pasquotank in 1735, his son JOSEPH, (who died in Pasquotank in 1783), JOSEPH’s son, WILLIAM SPENCE, who died in Pasquotank in 1785. WILLIAM married JUDE PERRY. I descend from his second son, ELISHA SPENCE (ca. 1776-ca.1840). I’m trying to find documentation for WILLIAM and JUDE’s marriage. I also believe that ELISHA was married three times. His first wife may have been a JORDON; his second wife (from whom I descend), was SUSANNA PERRY (at least records indicate this. Their first child was my ggg grandfather, SAMUEL PERRY SPENCE (1800-1867). SAMUEL was born in South Carolina (I believe York County, but am not sure). I think that WILLIAM fought in the American revolution and is the same WILLIAM SPENCE who received 640 acres in Davidson County, TN for 84 months of service in the war. When WILLIAM died in 1785, his eldest son, inherited his plantation. ELISHA relocated to Davidson County, where he married JANE BELL in 1810.
