Ancestors and
Descendants of Sebastian Cline
of Postorff, Alsace, Germany and North Carolina
and
Hans Georg Cline of of Postorff, Alsace,
Germany and Monroe County, Ohio
Johann Sebastian
"Boston" Cline arrived in America
in 1739, one of three sons of Moritz
(Mauritius) Cline to emigrate from Postorff,
Alsace, Germany to America.
After arriving in Philadelphia,
Sebastian owned land in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania. He made his way to North
Carolina in 1762 via the "Great Wagon
Road."
He and his descendants were a
major influence in the industrial,
commercial, civic and religious development
of the Catawba Valley of Western North
Carolina.
Many
of the descendants of Sebastian's great-great
grandfather, Pieter Klein, of Alsace, came to
America in the 1700's. This web site is an
attempt to identify the Klein/Cline families
who probably represent the majority of those
Cline families currently residing in the
United States.

I am
deeply indebted to Mr. George B. Cline of
Los Altos, CA for the excellent research
he conducted in the production of his
book, The Cline Families of North
Carolina 1750-1860 And Their European
Ancestors 1580-1760. Those seeking
to contact him can reach him at
<georgebcline@sbcglobal.net>
I
also wish to thank Mr. Harley Dakin, who
has initiated a Cline DNA project. His
efforts have provided the documentation
which establishes a major link between
the "Southern" Clines and their
"Northern" cousins. There have
also been many surprising results that
have dispelled long held myths, including
my own Hartshorn connection to the
Clines.
Those who would like to participate in
the CLINE DNA project or would like to
know more about the Ohio Clines can reach
Harley at <hpdakin@sbcglobal.net>
It is from
George Cline's book that much of the material on
this site originates.
Derick S. Hartshorn, III
