Clyde Thomas CLINE and Bertha Mae LACKEY were married
on 13 Feb 1932 in Catawba County, North Carolina.307 Bertha Mae LACKEY (daughter of
John William LACKEY and Florence Elizabeth MACE) was born
on 28 Jun 1912 in Burke County, North Carolina.104
Bertha was 19 when she married 15-year old Clyde Cline.
Family lore tells of first meeting Bertha. She was
working on textiles in the old-converted Hickory Armory.
Clyde looked up from the street and said something like,
"Hey, four-eyes!" Bertha's reply was something
less than positive.
She tried to shrink the distance between their ages and
deliberately shortened her age by one year when she
applied for her Social Security (before 1950). She stated
that she was born in 1913. Her birth records in Burke
County confirm that she was born in 1912.
Also, her parents were married two months after her birth
and Bertha probably wished to de-stigmatize her
illegitimaticy by adding the additional year. She died on
19 Jun 1996 in Catawba County, North Carolina.104,305
