Mustered in as Sergeant but was reduced to ranks in January-February, 1862. Promoted to Corporal on February 27, 1862. Captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia. Exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, August 5, t862. Returned to duty prior to November 1, 1862. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on November 17, 1862. Killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. "A good officer." E. died on 3 July 1863 at the age of 35 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania during the Civil War.293
He was keeper of the poor house, located at Long Town Twp. (today the property exists on the grounds of Sipe Orchard Home).

Company C, 28th Regiment NC Troops-
"This company, known as the "South Fork Farmers" was raised in Catawba County and enlisted at Newton, NC. It was mustered into service on 13 August 1861 and assigned to the regiment of Company C. After joining the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history.

"The information containing in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from Company muster rolls for 13 August - December 1861; March 1862-April 1863; and September 1864-February 1865. No company muster rolls were found for January-February 1862; May 1863-August 1864; or for the period after February 1865. Valuable information was obtained also from primary records such as the Roll of Honor, medical records, prisoner of war records, discharge certificate, and pension applications, and from secondary sources as postwar roster and histories, cemetery records and records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy."

Austin, E. Coleman, 2nd Lt. He resided in Catawba County, NC where he enlisted on 13 August 1861 and was mustered in as a sergeant but was reduced to ranks in January-February 1862. He was promoted to corporal on 27 February 1852. on 27 May 1862 he was captured at Hanover Court House, VA and confined at Fort Monroe, VA. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, James River, VA on 5 August 1862 and returned to duty prior to 1 November 1862. He was appointed 2nd Lt. on 17 November 1862. He was killed at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. "A Good Officer."
