She died on 22 August 2009 at the age of 62 in Brian Center, Viewmont, Catawba County, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Rita Elaine Hoke Self, 62, of 3937 Belcross Drive, Charlotte, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Brian Center-Viewmont in Hickory after a period of declining health. Born Aug. 27, 1946, in Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Everette Hoke and Mildred Sigmon Hoke. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Charlotte and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Claremont. Rita was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School in Claremont and earned an associate's degree at Kings College in Charlotte. Despite partial paralysis at the age of 13 after being diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, Rita was a dedicated and inspirational volunteer for 22 years at Charlotte Orthopaedic Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Clyde William Hoke, and a sister, JoAnn Hoke Kornegay. Rita is survived by her husband of 33 years, Fred Ray Self; her sister, Betty Hoke Powell and husband, Gary, of Claremont; her brother, Bobby L. Sigmon and wife, Kathy, of Bethlehem; a brother-in–law, Avery T. Kornegay of Claremont; three sisters-in-law, Alma McKinney, Ellie McKinney and Georgia Self; and three brothers-in-law, Cecil Self, Eugene Self and wife, Barbara, and Harold Self, all residing in McDowell County. Rita also leaves behind a number of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service of celebration, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Gary Haddock, will be held at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Claremont on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m., prior to the service, and also will receive visitors after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be directed to The Children's Tumor Foundation, 95 Pine St., 16th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10005 or to the Women of the ELCA of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in memory of Rita Self at P.O.
