Survivors include her beloved husband of 59 years, Donald Matthews of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Lee and Daisy Matthews of Conover and Donald Ray and Melanie Matthews of Claremont; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Jerry Chapman of Hiddenite; brother and sisters-in-law, Dallard Lail of Taylorsville, Charles "Buddy" and Jean Lail of Conover and Mabel Sweat of Taylorsville; sisters, Christine Hedrick of Taylorsville and Peggy Story of Hickory; grandchildren, Joseph Matthews and girlfriend, Stacy Deal, Amber London, Carey Smith and husband, Mark, Amanda Eury and husband, Brian, and Jessica Durham; and great-grandchildren, Aaron Matthews, Alexis Moser, Jacob Eury, Lauren Smith, Everette Smith and Gabriella "Gabby" Matthews A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover. The Rev. Bobby Langston will officiate and burial will follow in Conover City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Sunday, prior to the funeral, at Drum Funeral Home in Conover. Pallbearers will be Joey Matthews, Brian Eury, Mark Smith, Fred Little, Keith Little and Steve Winebarger. Born June 25, 1954, in Catawba County, he was the son of Donald C. Matthews and the late Helen Lail Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Melanie Canipe Matthews; a daughter, Amber Matthews London of Conover; sons, Joseph C. Matthews and Eric Moser, both of Conover; three grandchildren, Aaron Tyler Matthews, Alexis Michelle Moser and Gabriella Matthews; his father, Donald C. Matthews of Conover; a sister, Mary Ellen Chapman and her husband, Jerry, of Hiddenite; and a brother, Jerry Matthews and his wife, Daisy, of Conover. A memorial service will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, in the chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover, with the Revs. Bobby Langston and Jeremy Teague officiating.
