Joyce Marshalleen ECKARD was born on 10 July 1934 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 11 May 2009 at the age of 74 in Claremont, Catawba County, North Carolina. She was buried in Providence Memorial Cemetery, NC Hwy. #10 3 miles south of Catawba, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: CLAREMONT - Joyce Marshalleen Eckard Gates, 74, of Claremont, passed away Monday, May 11, 2009, at her residence. Born July 10, 1934, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Marshall Johnson Eckard and Celie Leona Lail Eckard. Mrs. Gates was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bill E. Gates Sr. and Garry M. Gates Sr.; a sister, Blene Matthews; and a grandson, Kevin M. Gates. She is survived by her husband, Melvin S. Gates of the home; son, Tommy Gates of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Dorothy Edwards and husband, Thomas, of Conover, Judy Potts and husband, Grady Dale, of Claremont and Joleen Scronce and husband, Kim, of Hildebran; four brothers, Melvin Huffman of Conover, Donald Eckard of Statesville, Robert Eckard of Catawba and Charles Eckard of Claremont; three sisters, Shirley Shook of Catawba and Charlotte Hilton and Betty Miller, both of Conover; nine grandchildren, Kimberily Shook, Lucas Shook, Christopher Gates, Bill Gates Jr., Casey Gates, Joshua Howell, Jessica Howell, Garry Gates Jr. and Amanda Gates; three stepgrandchildren, Tracy Harris, Judy Edwards and Jennie Connor; nine great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, with Pastor D. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Memorial Cemetery in Catawba. Pallbearers will be Joshua Howell, Michael Gates, Quincy Matthews, Jimmy Cabe, Mark Eckard and Gary Williams.
