5585. John Joseph HICKS Jr was born on 26 October 1942 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died of Merkel Cell Cancer and Chronic Lymphocitic Leukemia on 1 September 2012 at the age of 69 in Pallative Care & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, North Carolina. He was buried in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Hickory, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY John Joseph Hicks, Jr., 69, of Hickory, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton, after a year-long battle with cancer. John was born Oct 26, 1942, in Catawba County, to the late Viola Stine and John J. Hicks, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia (Pat) Flowers Hicks; son, John J. Hicks, III, and wife, Deborah, and their sons, Austin and Garrett; and son, James (Jamie) Hicks, and his son, Dallas. He is also survived by sisters, Nancy Liechty and husband, Dale, and niece, Lora Cain; and Patricia Ritchie. John was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, and a friend of many, and known for his sense of humor. His greatest love was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He enjoyed many hobbies including antiquing, trains, traveling, gardening, hun-ting, and woodworking. He was an Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of St. Stephens High School, Lenoir-Rhyne University, and advanced studies in banking at Louisiana State University, University of Colorado and Wisconsin University. He also taught courses for the American Institute of Banking at CVCC and Caldwell Community College. He spent his career as a Vice President at First National Bank of Catawba County, in the Hickory area, which later became First Union and then Wachovia, and spent his later years in Charlotte. John was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Alexander Railroad NRHS, Foothills Antique Power Association, and Sons of the American Legion. He was a former member of the Hickory Jaycees, Conover Lions Club, Newton-Conover Rotary Club, and Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He held many leadership positions throughout the years in many of those organizations. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hickory. The Rev. Robert Stevens will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A private entombment was held in the mausoleum of Wood-lawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.
