His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Paul Edward Wagner, 85, of County Home Road, Conover, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley from complications of lung cancer. Born Jan. 29, 1921, in Catawba County, he was the eldest son of the late Cletus Edward and Lucille Winebarger Wagner. Mr. Wagner retired as a rural mail carrier with the Conover Post Office, and for many years he and his wife, Orpha, owned and operated County Home Convenience Store. He served in World War II in the 2nd Armored Division under Gen. George Patton and served in North Africa, the European Theater, the invasion of France and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Orpha Ellis Wagner; a sister, Carrie Belle Wagner; and a brother, Carl Wagner. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Dixie and John Spivey of Charlotte and Paula Wagner of Newton; a grandchild, Andrew "Andy" Spivey and wife, Christy; a great-grandchild, Mary Berger; three brothers, Burley Wagner of Charlotte, and Owen "Pete" Wagner and Wayne Wagner, both of Conover; and four sisters, Virginia Sipe of Claremont, Rebecca Laws of Hickory, and Ruth McNeely and Faye Elizabeth Sigmon, both of Conover. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church. The Revs. David M. Seymour and Kristine Hill will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 16. Pallbearers will be Larry Isenhour, Dewitt Waters, Jackie Bowman, E. Ray McNeely Jr., Billy Beard and Johnnie Garren. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the XYZ Club and Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Zion Lutheran Church.
