Laurin Carl "L.C." HUFFMAN was born on 14 March 1921 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He died after a period of declining health on 27 July 2004 at the age of 83 in Solomons, Maryland. He was buried in Solomons, Maryland. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Laurin Carl “L.C.” Huffman, 83, of Solomons, Md., formerly of Catawba County, died July 27, 2004, in Solomons, Md., after a period of declining health. Born March 14, 1921, in Hickory, he was a son of the late Loy and Ruth Yount Huffman. L.C. was the third son of Ruth and Loy Huffman. After graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1942, he did graduate work at Duke University. He moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the Naval Research Lab, where he was involved in the early development of radar that was used in World War II. He retired in 1976 from the Federal Aviation Administration. In 1998, L.C. and his wife, Maryalice, moved from Washington, D.C., to Asbury Solomons Retirement Community in Solomons, Md. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Bryant Huffman. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Maryalice Flinner Huffman of the home; two daughters, Anita Shepherd and husband, Jim, of Solomons, Md., and Pamela Hawkins of Congers, N.Y.; a son, Laurin Huffman II and wife, Sylvia, of Seattle, Wash.; a sister, Ruth Ledbetter of Hickory; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ruth HUFFMAN was born on 17 March 1929 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 4 February 2005 at the age of 75 in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. She was buried in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Ruth Huffman Ledbetter, 75, of Skyline Road, Hickory, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Born March 17, 1929, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Loy Seth Huffman and Ruth Edna Yount Huffman Moose. A member of Miller’s Lutheran Church, she was a retired teacher with the Alexander County school system, previously taught at Sweetwater Elementary, St. Stephens Elementary and St. Stephens Lutheran Day schools and retired from Bethlehem Elementary School. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Lenoir-Rhyne College and a master’s degree in reading from Appalachian State University. She was a member of the Alexander County Retired School Personnel, secretary, Taylorsville Read A Book Club, PSI Conclave of Kappa Kappa Iota, past president and secretary, State Historian, original member of the Alexander County Directors of the Library Board, Alexander County Republican Women, adult Sunday school teacher at Miller’s Lutheran Church, Luther League advisor, Mary Circle, church council, worship and music committee, chancel choir, served as church secretary, NCAE, Synod Council of the N.C. ELCA, served on the regional board of the ALCW, N.C. State Board of the WELCA, bulletin editor of the Bethlehem Lions Club, member of the Lenoir-Rhyne Century Club and served on the Golden Bears Reunion Committee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Coolidge Ledbetter; and three brothers, Dr. Gordon S. Huffman, L.C. Huffman and Bryant Y. Huffman. Survivors include two daughters, Kim Ledbetter Sheeks and husband, the Rev. Bruce Charles Sheeks, of Rockwell and Kay Ledbetter Willis and husband, Christopher Lee Willis, of Bethlehem; a grandson, Charles Cameron Sheeks of Rockwell; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Leigh Willis of Bethlehem. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. C. Pierson Shaw Jr. at 2 p.m. Monday at Miller’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Charles Sheeks, Jacob Walker, Ken Ledbetter, Ronnie Jackson, Bobby Martin and Matthew Bumgarner. Honorary pallbearers will be Kappa Kappa Iota Sorority sisters and retired school personnel. The family will be at the church from 6 to 8:30 tonight, Sunday, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday.
