Sarah Ann SIGMON and Elkanah ECKARD were married on 13 May 1873 in Catawba County, North Carolina by J. M. Smith, Min..1037,1039 by Rev. J. M. Smith. Witnesses to the wedding were P. E. Isenhower, a friend; Alphonso Sigmon, her brother and Emanual Eckard, his brother. They1037,1039 resided 206 1st avenue, North in Conover, Catawba County, North Carolina in 18831040 Elcanah built his house in 1883 and it still stands at 206 First Avenue N., in Conover, NC. The inside is very up to date having central air conditioning and heat, dishwasher, washer and dryer, large closets and two bathrooms. Elkanah ECKARD, son of Johnathan [Ekard] ECKARD and Adeline Selena/Celina SIMMONS, was born on 13 December 1847 in Catawba County, North Carolina.58,91,729,944,1037 His record in the War Between the States is as follows:1041 ECKARD, ELCANAH, Private, 3rdBn-E JR. Enlisted at Camp Stokes, near Greensboro, January 4, 1865, for the war. Hospitalized at Goldsboro on January 10, 1865, with acute diarrhoea. Furloughed from hospital on February 11, 1865. Reported absent through February 28, 1865. No further records. [His initials may have been L. K. His surname may have been Ekard.] He died on 21 May 1929 at the age of 81 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Conover City Cemetery, Conover, Catawba, North Carolina. Elcanah was the first blacksmith to come to Conover and he owned quite a lot of land. The street next to City Hall and the Post office was called Eckard Avenue. He sold the property where the City Hall is located to the United Church of Christ for $75.00. The same lot today is valued at $189,500.00
Elcanah was the first trustee of Concordia Lutheran Church. He helped to make the brick at Lyle Creek and also have his son tutored in English, so that he would more easily adapt to the new country. Elkana enlisted in Company E, 72nd Regiment NC Troops, on 5 Jan 1865. This Co E, 72nd, organized at Newton, was the last of Catawba Co's twelve companies; it was composed of 17-year-old boys.
