Robert Leroy ECKARD Jr. was born about 1926 in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. He died on 12 August 2007 at the age of 81 in Chesapeake, Virginia. at Chesapeake General Hospital. His obituary appeared as follows: Lt Col. Robert 'Sport' Eckard, 81, of Sanderling, N.C. passed away on Sunday, Aug. 12, at Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Greensboro, the son of the late Robert Leroy Eckard Sr. and Pansy Phillips Eckard of Conover. Eckard attend­ed Newton-Conover High School and joined the U.S. Navy after grad­uation. After discharge from the Navy, he moved to Bowling Green, Ky., where he attended college and there met his wife, Rose Marie Schroer. He then attended the University of Colorado in Denver and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in business administration. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force for a career and served 23 years, serving during World War II and two terms of duty in Vietnam. In 1967 he received an award as the Outstanding U.S. Air Force Transportation Officer. He was Chief Operations Branch, Control & Analysis Division of the Directorate of Passenger Traffic at Headquarters, Military Traffic Management and Terminal Service. After retirement from the Air For, he served as an adviser to the U.S. Army in the Civil Service Administration. When fully retired he and his family moved to Sanderling on the Outer Banks and opened Carawan Seafood Market where some of his family works today. A service of remembrance was held in Sanderling on Aug. 14. He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Schroer Eckard of the home; three daughters, Cecelia, Sus^n Marie aid Christina Rose^five sons, Robert, Paul, Mark, Timothy and David; a sister, Frances McRee of Conover; a nephew, Robert E. McRee Jr. of Statesville; and a niece, Judy Harman of Maiden; 12 grand­children and seven great-grand­children. He will be buried with military honors in Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
