CONOVER - Mrs. Ruby Inez Hefner Baker, 85, of Conover, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Born Feb. 8, 1919, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Edgar and Dona Leona Turner Hefner.
She was a homemaker and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Eugene Baker; six sisters, Goldie Baker, Nina Shook, Tressie Kauffman, Edith Eckard, Frankie Miller and an infant, Violet May Hefner; three brothers, Mernie, Ervin and Gentry Hefner; and a granddaughter, Loree Diane Baker.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Willine and Clarence Austin of Hickory and Kathleen and Zane Ikerd and Darlene Baker of Conover; three sons and daughters-in-law, Seth and Brenda Baker of Asheville, Leon and Ramona Baker of Hickory and Jerry and Garry Baker of the home; a sister, Alda Bolick of Hickory; two brothers, Elton Hefner of Hickory and Walter Hefner of Taylorsville; eight grandchildren, Melissa Barringer, Tim Austin, Karen Morrow, Greg Baker, Kristi Thomas, David Baker, Matthew Baker and Amanda Ikerd; 13 great-grandchildren and another expected in February; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Conover.
The body will be placed in the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m., prior to the service.
The Revs. Scott Johnson and Anton Lagountine will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight, Monday, July 19, 2004, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be David Baker, Greg Baker, Tim Austin, Matthew Baker, Chris Barringer, Neil Baker and Walter Morrow.
Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 2126 St. John’s Church Road, Conover, N.C. 28613.
The family has entrusted arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremations in Conover.

Tressie Marie HEFNER was born on 14 October 1914 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 15 June 2003 at the age of 88 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. She was buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery, north of Conover, Catawba County, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: Tressie Marie Hefner Kaufman, 88, of 2304 Hounds Way, Hickory, NC, died June 15, 2003 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born October 14, 1914 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Dona Turner Hefner. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and had previously worked for Norton Glove Manufacturing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Claud E. Eckard, husband Carl “Jack” Kaufman, son Terry Eckard, brothers Mernie Hefner, Ervin Hefner and Gentry Hefner; sisters Goldie H. Baker, Nina H. Shook, Frankie H. Miller and Edith H. Eckard. Survivors include: Sons & Daughters-in-law: Delmar Eckard and wife Betty of Hickory, Dalthard Eckard and wife Peggy of Talbott, TN; Stepson: Steve Stirewalt; Stepdaughters: Joan Reed and Betty Carswell; Grandchildren: Jonathan Eckard of Conover, Dax Eckard of Dyersburg, TN; Great Granddaughter: Elizabeth Massie Eckard, Sisters: Ruby H. Baker of Conover, Alda H. Bolick of Hickory; Brothers: Elton Hefner of Hickory, Walter Hefner of Taylorsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul Birner will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dax Eckard, Dennis Hefner, Barkley Hefner, Brent Hefner, Keith Fox, and David Waters. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
