NOTE: named a "colored servant James Wilson" as having right to live out his days on Matthew's land. Matthew was quite well off. The 1860 census listed his real estate at a value of $2500 and personal property worth $19,000.

He was married to Juliana ARNEY (daughter of Christian , Sr. ARNEY and Sarah (unk. surname) ARNEY) on 21 Jan 1813 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.
