The only info I do have is she was a friend of ELIZABETH JONES, who was AZOR’S second wife, and she was born 1784 Chowan County, North Carolina and died January 1829 Chowan County, North Carolina.

  6. Mr. John Foster Speight,
I’m not sure if you still check this web site but you had a query about JACOB HINTON (will dated about 1760). I have an account on Ancestry.Com and the will is listed there. JACOB HINTON names his children: Jacob, William, Reuben(my relative) and Mary Freeman. Betty (Elizabeth) is not listed in the will. JACOB Senior had been married to SARAH FREEMAN, daughter of WILLIAM FREEMAN II. Later, Sarah married a Haise gentleman and George Outlaw.
THOMAS SPEIGHT and MARY HINTON SPEIGHT were related to JACOB Senior and willed him land and 13 slaves.
I think this is also your line of SPEIGHTS.
    Thank you,
    Jill Hinton Pana

  13. Interested in finding out if I have the right family for ARTHUR W. STAFFORD, born in Tyner, Chowan co, in Abt. 1904, he married ADDIE GLOVER in 1925, my ancestor. I’m thinking his parents are JOHN STAFFORD, born in Abt. 1852, and ELLEN, one person listed her last name being CHAPPELL?, born Abt 1867. My reasoning being I found a ARTHUR in Chowan co, NC in 1910 and 1920 census, I went back and found ELLEN w/ husband , JOHN in 1900 census, ELLEN is also in 1930 census, same place, w/ one daughter and one of her sons. I have his obituary notice from the Beaufort newstimes, from 1932. Which list his Mother, ELLEN, Two brothers, One named W.J. And 5 sisters, SALLIE STAFFORD, MRS G.S. REISY (i searched, Couldn’t find anything.) MRS J.E. DAIL (I searched and found a ESSIE STAFFORD married a JAMES E. DAIL on 1911, Chowan co. There is a ESSIE/ELLEN listed in above mentioned census records) MRS MESDAMES JESSE COPELAND and MRS JOBE TERRY, I Couldn’t find anything on them. If anyone can confirm these to be his family, I’d appreciate it. I’d like to add them to my tree, if there are indeed his parents / siblings. Thanks very much.

  17. Hi I’m looking for ancestors on my father’s side who have some roots in Chowan county. It starts with WASHINGTON DILLARD and SUSAN BEMBRIDGE. They had a son BURTON ANTHONY who is said to have been born in Scotland Neck as a slave. He somehow migrated to Chowan county where he married MARY JANE GASKINS on 1/15/15874 at Kadesh church. They had multiple children. According to 1910 census he was 60 yrs old. He probably was a slave. I would like to find the name of his owner and find out more about his wife. I have no info on her other than census records showing her already married. MARY’S parents names were VALENTINE GASKINS and MARY JOHNSTON GASKINS. Can’t find any record of these people other that Mary’s death from broncho pneumonia.

  18. Hello again Judith,

A WM PAGETT was issued two patents in Chowan County on March 27, 1713. One for 250 acres “lying on Chowan river between CHA. GAVINS & Pat. LAUGHLINS line” and the second for 50 acres “beginning at a gum his corner tree on Chowan river.” A WM PADGET was issued a patent for 640 acres on March 9, 1717 “lying in Chowan precinct beginning at ye centre of two pines and a read oak EDWARD HOWCOTS corner…to THOMAS ROGERS line… to a gum in the Mare (Miery) branch a line tree of Colo. MAULES…to CHARLES GULLIVERS corner. I would bet that all three of these land grants were for the same person, William Padgett, your ancestor. I have discovered that the SPEIGHT and BLITCHENDEN families were receiving land in Chowan and Perquimans counties at approximately the same time frame. In addition, THOMAS BLITCHENDEN left a will in Perquimans county in 1744. Also, the South Carolina archives’ online search engine shows numerous references for the BLITCHENDENs and WILLIAM PADGET or PADGETT.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, John F. Speight

    1. I have noticed that WILLIAM BLITCHENDEN is involved in Land Deeds with ELIAS STALLINGS in Bertie Co NC. 1756.

  22. Searching for WILLIAM PADGETT (Paget, Padget) in Rockyhock, Chowan County, NC. It is said he had a plantation there, c. 1710. He married a SARAH BLITCHENDEN from Perquimans County, in Edenton, N.C. While in that area, I would enjoy seeing the land my ancestors once owned. They must have sold their land before moving on to Colleton, SC.

    1. Hi Judith,

Was your SARAH BLITCHENDEN related to either THOMAS BLITCHENDEN or one of his sons JOHN or WILLIAM BLITCHENDEN? Did not know that any migrated to South Carolina. Were any of your family related to the SPEIGHT family as both families were neighbors in Perquimans and Chowan counties in North Carolina. Thanks and have a wonderful day!

      1. Hello John, just read your reply of December 4, 2014. Because I haven’t been on the site since April, 2014, I almost forgot about my query on the Padgett’s and Blitchenden’s. SARAH was one of THOMAS BLITCHENDEN’S childen. The BLITCHENDENS moved with the PADGETTS to South Carolina sometime around 1760, to Colleton County, SW of Charleston. As I have not researched the BLITCHENDEN families yet, I do know that THOMAS BLITCHENDEN move to SC. As of now, I do not know if any of the BLITCHENDENS who may have married into your family group. Go to Google and type in William Padget Chowan County, NC c. 1710. There you will find dates and places of the two families and a little history.

I will check out this site I’m writing (to you) from in the near future. Let me know if anything stated here is of any help. From the Google site it does say there were seven BLITCHENDEN sons who moved to SC with the Padgetts. They are children of THOMAS BLITCHENDEN.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays, Judith Spencer

    2. Judith, I just read your query and would like to know if you have an ELISHA PADGETT in your database. He was born about 1795 perhaps in Beaufort District, South Carolina. He probably is not a son of your WILLIAM, but could there be a connection? ELISHA married LAVINIA BENNET February 8, 1816 in Bulloch County Georgia. They lived in several counties in Georgia before moving to Duval, now Clay County, FL in the 1840’s. He had several children, the eldest being WILLIAM.

  23. Looking for information in regards to my 7th Great Grandfather, JAMES J. LONG, 1632 – 1711. His spouse was ELIZABETH HAWKINS. I have found a portion of his probated will, and wonder if any thing referred to is still around the area. He left two “plantations” to his sons. One was referred to as the brick house. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Howdy cousin!
JAMES LONG was my 9th great grandfather. I too am seeking information on his wife ELIZABETH HAWKINS. You can email me and we can compare notes.

      1. I have been working on the LONGS and HAWKINS for a while, trying to sort out all the early JAMES. I would love to compare notes if you are still interested.

  24. I am looking for any information available on WILLIAM HINTON. He was born in 1670 Wiltshire, England and died 1736 Chowan, NC I would like to find when he came to America, but any information will be gratefully appreciated.

    1. Hi Sam,
I am researching JOHN HINTON, WILLIAM’S brother. JOHN was born about 1673 in England and died around 1732 in Chowan County. I do not have any info on when they came to America, but I found the following info recently, which might interest you:

The following excerpts are taken from the website http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncwarren/fam-hist/families/davis-duke.htm. They are from a talk given by genealogist Forrest King to a group in Warren County, NC. in 1998. After reading this it seems unlikely that either of these JOHNS has upper class English roots.

“…….So why do we care about society status? Take for instance JOHN HINTON. He was reported to be the grandson of Sir JAMES HINTON who was very, very wealthy and a financier of the Virginia Company in the 1620s. This still may be true, but the facts point in another direction. When JOHN HINTON came to North Carolina, someone else paid his way here and he was illiterate, behaviors more typical of the servant or lower class than the upper class. One would expect Sir JAMES’ children and grandchildren to be well educated and to have positions of prominence in the English society, so our JOHN HINTON as a grandchild of Sir JAMES does not make sense. Problems of society status with the Dukes and Blakes are similar in nature, with their activities in the community being inconsistent with the economic class of their supposed parents and grandparents.”

HINTON FAMILY: “The HINTONS are another family where a genealogist has connected our ancestor to one of the noble class in England. This published genealogy has John Hinton as a grandson of Sir JOHN HINTON of Wiltshire County, England, one of the owners of the Virginia Company. The theory states that three of Sir JOHN’S grandchildren (supposedly including our JOHN) migrated to Virginia before 1700 and bought land. Eventually, all three grandchildren moved to North Carolina. By 1715, the name JOHN HINTON is showing up on both sides of the Virginia-North Carolina border at the same time. The Virginia JOHN HINTON (even if he were a grandson of Sir JOHN HINTON) can be differentiated easily from the North Carolina JOHN HINTON. The Virginia JOHN was a good-sized landowner who owned land in Nansemond County up into the 1720s. The North Carolina JOHN (our ancestor) had his transportation expenses to the colonies paid for by another individual, indicating that he probably did not have much wealth. JOHN of North Carolina has a brother WILLIAM whose passage was also paid for by the same individual previously mentioned. JOHN HINTON was born about 1673 probably in England and married MARY HARDY after his immigration to North Carolina. He showed up first as a juror in 1715. He was able to accumulate a little land during his brief lifetime (Map B Number 5). He attained the rank of colonel in the local militia. He was also a justice of the peace in Chowan County in 1725. He was primarily a farmer, but he also had carpentry and cooper skills. He died about 1732. His wife MARY married THOMAS HOLIDAY and had children by that marriage who relocated to Connecticut. His daughter ANN NANCY married SOLOMON ALSTON.”
HARDY FAMILY: “The HARDY family is another one where a questionable connection between the old world and Virginia HARDYS has been suggested and widely published in a genealogical work. JOHN HARDY is supposed to be a son of a JOHN NOBLE WORTHINGTON HARDY of England. JOHN of Virginia’s wife is stated to be CHARITY O’DWYER whose parents migrated to Maryland and Westmoreland County, Virginia. This relationship is still possible but there appears to be no direct proof of that theory linking JOHN NOBLE to JOHN HARDY of Virginia. JOHN HARDY was The following excerpts are taken from the website http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncwarren/fam-hist/families/davis-duke.htm. probably born in England and married CHARITY — before coming to the New World. He first showed up in the North Carolina records in 1695 when he petitioned the court for 350 acres of land (possibly Map B Number 9), 50 acres each for himself, his wife, and his five children. He was very active in community affairs: Sheriff in Chowan County in 1711, signer of petition raising money for protection against the Indians, and vestryman for the parish located in Edenton which had only been started about three years earlier about 1714. He also did a stint as a justice of the Chowan County Court about 1718. He died about 1723. His daughter MARY married JOHN HINTON.”

    2. I have a PRISCILLA FREEMAN in my line who married a WILLIAM HINTON in Chowan Co., N.C. (Gates Co., N.C. now) in the middle 1700s. I am still researching to find more re them. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

      1. Nancy,
I believe this would be my line of HINTONS. They are an illusive clan to be sure. Check out my Ancestry.Com account, It’s public. WILLIAM was the son of JACOB HINTON.

      2. Hi John,
Notice you have spent a considerable amount of time researching various branches of the SPEIGHT ancestry. I have always been puzzled by the spelling of the names SPEIGHT and SPAIGHT. Are these members of the same families with just a difference in the spelling of surnames?

      1. My father’s brick wall was JOHN ELLIFF. I’ve picked up his work and rather than finding parents and more dates, focusing on his life in Chowan County. (At the moment trying to identify where abouts in Chowan County he lived. Earliest tax list I’ve found where he appears is 1784, 100 acres. Comparing tax lists I feel there is a reasonable chance he was neighbor to a GARRETT.) If you have something regarding CHARITY GARRETT ELLIFF, it would be wonderful to learn. Yours, Stephanie Doll (nee Elliff).

    2. Hello Barbara. I’m relation to JOHN ELLIFF. JOHN ELLIFF signed the marriage bond for EVERARD and LEAH. I did not know they were CHARITY’S parents! Thx for the birth/dead dates for CHARITY – my dad didn’t have that info. I can share my dad’s geneology page on JOHN ELLIFF, which might be of interest. Would be interested if you have anything further back in time, as JOHN ELLIFF was as far back as my dad got in his research.

    3. My father’s brick wall was JOHN ELLIFF. I’ve picked up his work and rather than finding parents and more dates, focusing on his life in Chowan County. I see your post regarding CHARITY GARRETT ELLIFF. Could we connect and share notes? Yours, Stephanie Doll (nee Elliff).

  29. Hello Taneya, looking for information on DANIEL MCDANIEL b. 1632 in Chowan County. He is my great (x6) grandfather. Looking for his parents.

  30. Hello, and good day to y’all. I am looking for information about a JAMES HINTON born 1670 in Wiltshire, England and died in 1761 Chowan, NC US he was married to CATHERINE SUMNER 1690-1793 according to what I have found on Ancestry.com. They had 5 children a JONAS 1680, AMOS 1734, DEMPSEY 1738, AARON 1740-1795 and JOHN born about 1741? not sure about this. I am seeking information on when he might have entered the US and where and possibly some detailed information about where he lived the time line or what ever records you might have about him or any of his children. Thanks
    John Hinton

    1. John, I hope you are still checking this web site. I am looking for information on WILLIAM HINTON. Born 1670 Wiltshire, England and died 1736 Chowan, NC. He must surely have been kin to your John Hinton. I will check my files and see if I have anything on John.

      1. Hello Mr. Keenon:

A WILLIAM HINTON (“my trusty and well beloved brother”), along with MARY HINTON and HARDY HINTON, were the executors for JOHN HINTON of Chowan County per his June 21, 1730 will. WILLIAM has an estate file in North Carolina Estate Files, 1663 – 1979 on FamilySearch as well. WILLIAM HINTON’S wife was ELIZABETH HINTON. That’s all I have at this time.

        Thanks,
        John F. Speight

    2. John,
In regards to your query about JAMES HINTON 1670 posted March 2012- DNA results link JAMES HINTON 1642 to my family member JAMES DANIEL HINTON JUNIOR of Rocky Mount, N. C (2015). The earliest traceable family ancestor I’ve found is JACOB HINTON of Chowan, N. C. early 1700’s. I do have records of a JAMES HINTON and JACOB HINTON buying land together on Bennett’s Creek from this time period.
My Hinton Clan members were cousins of a THOMAS SPEIGHT.
The web site “Free Family History” has a will of JAMES HINTON of Chowan, N. C. (early 1700’s).
      Hope this helps.
      Jill Hinton Pana

      1. Hello Ms. Pana;

Was this JACOB HINTON related to your JAMES HINTON? If so, in what way? Where these HINTONS residents of Chowan, Bertie or Perquimans Counties? What happened to JACOB HINTON? Do you have any information on him or his children? MARY SPEIGHT was the sister of JACOB HINTON and his children were her nieces and nephews. Who were JACOB and JAMES HINTON’S parents?
Thanks and have a wonderful day!

        John F. Speight

        1. Yes, FamilytreeDNA suggest they were related. JACOB and JAMES HINTON bought land together on Bennett’s Creek in Chowan, North Carolina in the early 1700’s. Much of their land was acquired from the Chowan Indians. I am a descendant from this JACOB HINTON and do have information on his children. MARY SPEIGHT is listed as cousin to this JACOB HINTON in about 1730 when she and her husband THOMAS sold land on Hogg’s Creek to this JACOB HINTON. I would be happy to share information with you if you have an interest.
          Jill Hinton Pana

          1. Hello again Ms. Pana:

The only info I have on JAMES HINTON is that he has an estate file in North Carolina Estate Files, 1663 – 1979 on FamilySearch. As to the JACOB HINTON deed from THOMAS and MARY SPEIGHT, Hathaway’s abstract in North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register has a date of March 5, 1723. If you have a copy of this deed, I would appreciate getting a copy or if you can tell me where you got the deed from I will try to get a copy myself. MARY SPEIGHT in her 1740/41 will names JACOB HINTON as her brother and names JACOB, REUBEN and WILLIAM as sons of her brother JACOB HINTON. She also names MARY and BETTY (a known nick name for Elizabeth) as daughters of her brother JACOB HINTON. She refers to all the aforementioned children as “cuzon” which was often used instead of nephew or niece in colonial times. I am also looking for the parents of your JAMES and JACOB HINTON because they would be the parents for my MARY SPEIGHT as well. Somewhere I saw a notation that JACOB HINTON had a 1760 will in Chowan County, but I have been unable to find it anywhere. Would you be aware of its whereabouts? Will be glad to share what little information I have, although it mainly consists of what I have written here.

            Thanks,
            John F. Speight

    3. Did you find any information on JAMES HINTON? I’m a HINTON from North Carolina and know he’s a relative from FamilyTree.
      Thanks,
      Jill Hinton Pana
