Longstreet Presbyterian Church
( Photo by Howard Bridges )
Longstreet Presbyterian Church is about eight miles west of Fort Bragg's main post area on Longstreet Road
near Sicily Drop Zone. The church was organized by Highland Scots around 1756, and the white clapboard building,
which is maintained in its original condition, was erected around 1845. It is one of three pioneer Presbyterian
churches in the area. The others are Barbecue Presbyterian Church in Harnett County and Bluff Presbyterian
Church east of the Cape Fear River.
Some historical accounts refer to Longstreet as the "mother" of Presbyterian churches in the area. Members of the three churches
became founding members of McPherson, China Grove, Bethel, Bethesda and Union churches. The government agreed to preserve the church when
the land was bought for a military reservation in 1918. The National Historic Landmark is protected by federal and state law.
The grounds are open for a special memorial service by the 18th Airborne Corps each year on the last Sunday of June. Descendants of church
members hold their annual reunion at the service. The four-acre site includes a cemetery where about 30 Conderate soldiers are buried.
Military training is prohibited in the immediate area of the church and cemetery.
The church is one of the Fort Bragg settings in L.H. "Bucky"Burruss' 1990 novel "A Mission for Delta." In the novel,
Delta Force soldiers stage a fake burial at the cemetery to gain the confidence and cooperation of a Nicaraguan woman. School groups visit
the site. Arrangements to visit the church can be made by contacting Fort Bragg's Real Property Branch at 910-396-7819.
