ALLEN STARLING FAMILY CEMETERY
Located
about 1/2 mile southsouthwest of Godwin in Black River Township of Cumberland
County. From the intersection of N.C. Route 82 and S.R. 1800 (Julian Street)
in Godwin, southsouthwest 0.57 miles on a dirt road along the northwest
side of the SCL railroad tracks then 20 yards westnorthwest from the road.
Maintained, last burial 1930.
Approximate site of unmarked grave of Atwood Ray Pope. (Son of Atwood
Azzell Pope and Lila Beatrice Rhye (both are buried in Veteran's Memorial
Park in Dunn), born 24 February 1929 and died 14 June 1930.)
Approximate site of unmarked grave of Allen Starling. (Son of John
Starling and Sarah A. "Sallie" Ross, born about October 1847
and died 20 April 1922, married about 1872 Nancy Strickland.)
Nancy, Wife of Allen Starling 27 Jun 1841 - 8 Aug 1919. (Nancy Strickland,
daughter of Isaac Strickland and Nancy Jackson (both are buried at Antioch
Baptist Church in Falcon).)
James Henry Pope, son of W.C. & Mary Pope 15 Aug 1890 - 20 Nov
1923. (Son of Wiley Cornelius Pope and Mary Williford (both are buried
at Antioch Baptist Church), married 5 November 1911 Virginia Hazel Starling.)
Approximate site of unmarked grave of Alice Mae Starling. (Daughter
of Allen Starling and Nancy Strickland, born in April 1883 and died 25
December 1929.)
Lena E., Dau. of G.W. & I.V. Dorman 17 Nov 1894 - 20 Jan 1923.
(Lena Ellen Dorman, daughter of George Washington Dorman and Ina Virginia
Parker (both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Dunn), married 12 June
1921 Jesse James Hair.)
NOTE: There are at least two others buried here:
Mary Ellen Starling, daughter of Allen Starling and Nancy Strickland,
born 10 November 1874 and died 25 November 1929, married 12 April 1910
John Robert Tew (he is buried at the Bluff Presbyterian Church), is buried
here in an unmarked grave.
Lela Ann Dorman, daughter of George Washington Dorman and Ina Virginia
Parker, born about 1907 and died about 1930, married James Miller, is buried
here in an unmarked grave.
Mr. Atwood A. Pope provided much data about this cemetery.
RONNIE MILLER GRAVE
About 3 miles northeast of Godwin. From S.R. 1804 (Rhodes Bond Road),
northnorth- east 1.15 miles on U.S. Route 301, west 200 yards on a gravel
road, south 30 yards to a fenced-in enclosure.
