McKAUGHAN, Isaac Harrison – (d. 1923)

Death Occurred Near Kernersville; Father of C.M. McKAUGHAN

I.H. McKAUGHAN, father of C.M. McKAUGHAN, clerk of the superior court here, died yesterday at 12 o’clock at his home near Kernersville, aged 85 years.  He was born near High Point and spent all his life on his farm in Forsyth, and was well known and highly esteemed in the section in which he lived.  The announcement of his death has been received with regret by his many friends and acquaintances.

Three and one-half years were given by Mr. McKAUGHAN to service in the Confederate forces during the Civil war, and in that great struggle he was always a faithful and gallant soldier, devoted to his duty and giving his services with unstinted loyalty.  He was a member of Norfleet camp, Confederate veterans.

Mr. McKAUGHAN married twice. His first wife was Miss Esther C. ROBERTSON, who died in May 1898. To the first union there were seven children, three girls and four boys, and of these Leana, the oldest child, died when quite young, and Mrs. Mary HESTER, who died in 1896.  Children of the first marriage surviving are Mrs. Martha <…>teele, of Greensboro; D.E. McKAUGHAN, of Kernersville; C.M. McKAUGHAN, of Winston-Salem; A.H. McKAUGHAN and Charles R. McKAUGHAN, of Kernersville.  Twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also are included among the descendants from the first union.

In July 1900, Mr. McKAUGHAN married Miss Mary N. PEGRAM. There were no children from this marriage. There was one adopted child, Carrie.  His second wife and five children by the first marriage and the adopted child survive.

In early manhood Mr. McKAUGHAN became a member of the Methodist Protestant church near High Point.  After moving to the Kernersville section he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church south of that place.  He remained a faithful member until the death.  He was one of the charter members of the Methodist Episcopal church and was always a most devoted attendant on the church services and in Sunday school.

Besides his children, Mr. McKAUGHAN is survived by one brother, J.W. McKAUGHAN, of Waughtown.

The funeral services will take place this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Methodist Protestant church at Kernersville, and interment will be in the Methodist graveyard.

The pall bearers will be the grandchidlren, Dr. Oma HESTER of Hickory; Dr. Ray McKAUGHAN, of High Point; Dr. Hooker McKAUGHAN, of Gastonia; William McKAUGHAN and Duke McKAUGHAN, of Kernersville, and Robert McKAUGHAN of Winston-Salem.
