Slave names derived from estate files, incomplete list

This is a list of slaves extracted from estate records for Henderson County, NC.  This is not a complete list, only those which the abstractor noted.  There are surely others. It might help to compare this list with the 1860 Slave Schedule and then look at the estate files for that owner.  Additions to this list are welcome, email to Barbara Beauregard.

Allen, James (estate file dated 1856) may have lived in Rutherford Co:

Slaves:  Frank, Nerva, Mariah, Walker, George, Mariah, Eliza, Charles, Lucy, Jerry, John, Dick & Mary and child; Lyme?, Ben, Nero, Venus; Lavade? and 3 children; Butler, Larkin, Sam, Indy? (a girl).

Coston, William   1856

Slaves:  Pane, age 13, Sophrey and her two children, Harriett, age 6 and Manervey, age 2 1/2;  Mary, age 42 and Mary’s child Carline, age 1; Arey?, age 3, John, age 10 months and Jeby, age 12.

Gash, Martin

Slaves:  Sampson, Moriah & two children; Hannah and child;  James – so 4 adults and 3 children

KING, REBECCA   1866

Slave:  Mary

McCrary, Boyd 1843

Slaves:  Judson, Christine, Hannon and three others not named

McMinn, Jesse  1862

Slaves:  Lucinda – age 55,  Simon – age 20, Ellen – age 18

Merrill, William 1857

Slave: Mary,  Mariah, Marilda, Charles, Ed and wife Rosa and three children. Another document states Ed was Edmond. Charles and wife Rilda (probably Marilda)

Mills, John  1843

Slaves:  Robert, Elmiras, Elvira (age 14 in 1855), Henry (age 16 in 1856),  Sarah (age 16 in 1856,  Susan, Renah & child, Mingo

Patton,  Joseph  1843

Susan, Mary, Hariette, Ryla, Julia , Samuel, Isaac, Ann, Abraham, Charity,                    Rowland,  Green, Mariah,  George, Thankful

Underwood, Joseph 1841

Slaves:  Abram, a boy:, Sam, a boy; Mingo; Jane, a girl; Susan;  Jerry, a boy; Patsy, a girl;

As well as several who were not named
