McCASKILL - PHILIPPI PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY RAEFORD, N.C. 1888 - 1988
Special Thanks to Clyde B. Gillis of Duncan, Oklahoma
for sharing his records with us. From history notes of C.B. Johnson, Sr. we find that Mr. Patrick Pulaski
DeKalls Johnson and Mary Monroe Johnson were leaders in the founding of Philippi Presbyterian Church. According
to the wish of Allen McCaskill, uncle of C.B. Johnson, four acres of land were given to white people and two
acres adjoining to colored people for a church and cemetery.
Allen McCaskill (1800 - 1860) was the donor of the land on which the churches and cemetery are located. His
will requested that from his estate a site should be laid out, including the McCaskill graveyard, both for
public burying ground and for the erection of a Presbyterian Church. P.P.D. Johnson beneficiary and executor
of the will, laid off six acres of land for this purpose. The church did not materialize until some twenty
eight years later. No definite steps were taken to build a church until 1886. The Rev. Archibald McQueen served
several churches. He was a graduate of the University with a degree in law and studied medicine upon seeing the
need for doctors. During his medical curriculum he felt the call to the ministry, where he then entered the
Theological Seminary of the Synod of S. C. & Georgia. Rev. McQueen served Philippi until 1894 when ill health
forced him to give up his pastoral duties. He died two years later. Philippi Church celebrated its 100th year
of service in 1988.
Grave sites are shown as one walks toward the cemetery from the church, beginning on the left row,
to the rear.

Johnson Inf son of P.P.D. & M.E.Feb 17, 1892 These folks were my great grandparents. They had 14 children.
Mary Monroe's mother was Margaret Sofronis. My grandmother was Cordelia Johnson. My mother was Dorothy McGee. I am
Cynthia Susan Chew. Someday I would like to visit the church. I grew up with stories of these two wonderful people.
My address is P.O. Box 42, Clearwater, Fl. 33757. I spoke to CB Johnson, Jr. by telephone once. He and mother saw each
other periodically through the years. Great information on Phillippi-row number, important dates!.Please contact me if
I can be of assistance. (727) 588-4358 From Cynthia McGee Johnson Chew

A few years ago, my late mother and my late brother, both avid local
genealogists, and I went to Philippi cemetery to resolve a
question I had about one grave in particular. In the back of the cemetery
there are several old graves for the families of both James and Turquill
McNeill, two early McNeill families in what was then Cumberland county.
Around the marked graves are several small stones which at first glance
would have nothing on them. I had noticed some inscription barely noticable
on one of them, and on this particular visit, took some flour with me to rub
into the inscription to make it more readable. To my surprise, I read: (sic)
"T. McNeill APTH 1800." Suspecting "APTH" to be latin, I photographed the
floured lettering and took it to a fellow artist and friend of mine who is
well educated in latin as well as the history of lettering. She told me
"APTH" meant "ascended." Also, her assessment of the initial before the word
'McNeill' was that it was a 'T' and not a 'J' since the letter 'J' was never
capped in that time period as the letter T always has been. On the little
marker itself, the T has what could be a descender making it look like a
'J'. Such a correction might help some genealogist on the other side of the
country someday. Steve Edgerton Posted Aug. 31, 1999
