Montgomery County NCGenWeb
Because Montgomery County is a burned county, there are many original records that have been lost. Depending on the time period and other factors, most surviving original county records will be at the North Carolina State Archives. And there will have been records generated at the state level which will also be stored at the Archives.
The state library also has published abstracts, some microfilm, etc. It is housed in the same building as the Archives.

The following information is taken from the Guide to Records in the N.C. State Archives for Montgomery County.
Montgomery County established
in 1779 from Anson County.
The courthouse fire in 1835
caused the loss of many records from 1835 and years prior.
However, there were
deeds that were refiled after the fire, and you should always attempt to find
anything, as some papers were filed in two different counties for various
reasons, or at the state level as well.
There are categories
for the records of every county and they are filed accordingly in the index
file drawers at the search room.
