THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN to THOMAS B. LEWIS- 1836

This Indenture made this 29th Feby 1836 between THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN
of the first part THOMAS B. LEWIS of the second part & ABRAHAM W.
VENABLE of the third part witnesseth that for and in consideration
of five dollars in hand paid the said THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN by THOMAS
B. LEWIS the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as well as for
this consideration that whereas the said ABRAHAM W. VENABLE hath
this day become bound to JOHN R. HICKS as the security of the said
THOMAS B. LITTLETON for the sum of twenty five hundred dollars due
six months after date and the said THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN being
desirous to save & indemnify the said ABRAHAM W. VENABLE for such
undertaking from any loss or risk by reason thereof hath this day
bargained & sold & by these present doth bargain sell & deliver to
the said THOMAS B. LEWIS the following Negroes to wit ROBIN,
PLEASANT, REUBEN & DAVY to have & to hold the said Negroes
ROBIN, PLEASANT, REUBEN & DAVY to him the said THOMAS B. LEWIS
his heirs & assigns forever & the said THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN doth for
himself hiss heirs & assigns warrant & defend the title of the said
Negroes to the said THOMAS B. LEWIS. In trust nevertheless that if
the said ABRAHAM W. VENABLE shall at any time be likely to suffer or
to pay all or any part of the said debt by reason of the said
liability then at the instance of the said ABRAHAM W. VENABLE his
Executor or Administrator the said THOMAS B. LEWIS his Executor or
Administrator shall after due advertisement of at least twenty days
proceed to sell the said Negroes or as many as may be necessary for
cash & discharge the above debt interest & any costs which he may
incur by reason of said liability and the balance pay over to the
said THOMAS B. LITTLEJOHN his heirs or assigns in testimony whereof
we have hereunto set our hands & seals the day & date first above
written.

The execution of the foregoing Deed of Trust was this day duly
proven on oath before me by JAMES T. LITTLEJOHN the Subscribing
