BENJAMIN SMITH to JOHN SMITH- 1787

This Indenture made the first day of November in the year of Our
Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty Seven between BENJAMIN
SMITH of the County of Granville & State of North Carolina of the
one part & JOHN SMITH of the County & State aforesaid of the other
part witnesseth that the s'd BENJAMIN SMITH for & in consideration
of the sum of One Hundred & Ten pounds specie to him in hand paid by
the s'd JOHN SMITH the rec't whereof he the s'd BENJAMIN SMITH doth
hereby acknowledge and himself therewith fully satisfied contented &
paid doth give grant bargain & sell unto the s'd JOHN SMITH one
certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the s'd
County of Granville on both sides of Little Creek and bounded as
followeth, to wit, begining at the Road on Inscoe Spring branch
thence runing down the s'd branch along JOHN SMITH's line to the
Creek thence down the creek to a poplar a corner tree thence west to
the old line thence north along the line to a pine a corner tree
thence east to the road thence down the road to the begining
containing by estimation One Hundred & Seventeen acres be the same
more or less together with all wood &c To have & to hold the s'd
tract or parcel of land & all & singular the premises with their
appurtenances unto the s'd JOHN SMITH his heirs & assigns forever &
the s'd BENJAMIN SMITH for himself & his heirs doth covenant & agree
that he the s'd JOHN SMITH his heirs & assigns shall & may forever
hereafter quietly & peaceably occupy possess & enjoy the above said
land & premises with the appurtenances against him the s'd BENJAMIN
SMITH his heirs & assigns & against all & every other person or
persons claiming by through or under him or them or any of them In
testimony whereof the s'd BENJ'A SMITH hath hereunto set his hand &

Be it known that I MARY SMITH of the County of Granville and State
of North Carolina for and in consideration of the personal services
render me and the family by my grand Daughter JANE S. DOWNEY also
from a sense of duty on account of the death of a Negro which I have
heretofore given her, I the said MARY SMITH by these presents do
hereby give, grant make over & confirm unto the said JANE S. DOWNEY
my Negro girl named PEGGY about twelve years old with all her
increase to her the said JANE S. DOWNEY her heirs and assigns to
have and to hold the said Negro PEGGY and her increase
forever against the lawful claims of all other persons whatsoever.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th April
1827.

and saith that the signature "MARY SMITH" to the said deed of gift
is in the proper hand writing of MARY SMITH dec'd and that the
signature "ALEX. SMITH" is in the proper hand writing of ALEXANDER
SMITH dec'd whereupon on motion the said foregoing deed of gift is
ordered by the court to be registered.

This Indenture made this 24th day of June in the year A.D. eighteen
hundred & thirty between JOSEPH P. SNEED & EDNEY his wife of the
County of Maury & State of Tennessee of the one part and DUDLEY M.
SNEED of the County of Granville and State of North Carolina of the
other part Witnesseth that the said JOSEPH P. SNEED & EDNEY his wife
for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars to them
in hand paid by the said DUDLEY M. SNEED the receipt whereof is
hereby acknowledged hath & by these presents do bargain sell alien
convey & confirm unto him & his heirs and assigns forever a certain
tract or parcell of land containing one hundred acres more or less
situate in said county of Granville in the State of North Carolina
on a small stream called Ledge of Rocks which said tract of land is
a part of a two hundred acre tract that was heretofore laid off &
allotted to LUCY SATTERWHITE, the widow & relict of MITCHELL
SATTERWHITE deceased formerly of said County of Granville who is
also dead and which said tract of two hundred acres of land
descended by inheritance to the said EDNEY SATTERWHITE who is now
EDNEY SNEED having intermarried with the said JOSEPH P. SNEED
together with her sister ANN MARIA SATTERWHITE who afterwards
intermarried with one (JOHN W.) McGEHEE which ANN MARIAH is long
since dead intestate & without issue and being that part of said two
hundred acres of land which fell to the said EDNEY by inheritance as
aforesaid and the metes & bounds of said Two hundred acres can be
ascertained by reference to the laying off the dower of the said
LUCY SATTERWHITE as aforesaid or some record thereof in records of
said County of Granville. And they the said JOSEPH P. SNEED & EDNEY
his wife do hereby bargain sell convey & set over forever to the
said DUDLEY M. SNEED his heirs & assigns all our right title &
interest in and to said tract of one hundred acres of land situate
in said Granville County as aforesaid being the one half of the two
hundred laid off as aforesaid as the dower of the said LUCY
SATTERWHITE and to be ascertained as aforesaid and in that way we do
hereby warrant and defend the said undivided one hundred acres of
land to the said DUDLEY M. SNEED his heirs & assigns forever as
against ourselves our heirs & all persons claiming by through or
under us or them. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our
hands & seals the day & year first above written.

Then this deed of conveyance was produced in court and the execution
thereof duly acknowledged by JOSEPH P. SNEED to be act and deed for
the purposes therein mentioned and it appearing to the satisfaction
of the Court that EDNA SNEED is a feme court it is ordered
that JAMES BLACK, ALEXANDER CATHEY, (ROBERT) WORTHAM take the privy
examination of said EDNA SNEED trusting the fact whether or not she
signed & executed the same freely of her own accord and without
compulsion or under persuasion & make return thereof forthwith.

being by us examined privately & apart from her said husband JOSEPH
P. SNEED declares that she did freely willingly & voluntarily
execute the said foregoing deed without the compulsion of her said
husband and without any dread or fear of him. Given under our hands

This Indenture made this 3rd day of February 1818 between JOSEPH P.
SNEED of the County of Morgan & State of Georgia of the one part and
WILLIAM M. SNEED of the County of Granville and State of N. Carolina
of the one part, witnesseth that for and in consideration of one
hundred & fifty dollars to the said JOSEPH P. SNEED in hand paid by
the said WILLIAM M. SNEED at and before the sealing & delivery of
these presents the receit whereof he doth here by acknowledge and
there fore doth release acquit & discharge the said WILLIAM M. SNEED
his Executors & Administrators by these presents he the said JOSEPH
P. SNEED hath and doth hereby grant bargain sell alein and confirm
unto the said WILLIAM M. SNEED and his heirs all the right and title
which LEASTON SNEED one of the sons of DUDLEY SNEED dec'd late of
the State of Georgia of, in and to a certain tract and parcel of
land in the county of Granville situate lying and being on the
waters of Flat Creek containing four hundred and eighty acres and
all the houses building orchard ways waters, water courses profits
commodities, Hereditanents and appurtenances whatsoever to the said
premises hereby granted or any part whatsoever to the said premises
belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion and
reversions, remainder and remainders rents issues profits thereof
and also all the Estate right interest use trust, property claimand
demand whatsoever of him the said LEASTON SNEED SNEED inherited from
his farther DUDLEY SNEED dec'd being one of the only five children
left by the said DUDLEY and by the said LEASTON SNEED conveyed to
the said JOSEPH P. SNEED by deed bearing date the 13th day of August
1817 of in and to the premises and all deeds evidences & writings
hereby conveyed and all and singular & other premises hereby
bargained & sold and every part and parcel thereof with their and
every of their appurtenances unto the said WILLIAM M. SNEED his
heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use & behoof of him the
said WILLIAM M. SNEED and of his heirs and assigns forever and the
said JOSPEH P. SNEED for himself, his heirs Executors and
administrators doth covenant promise & grant to and with the said
WILLIAM M. SNEED his heirs & assigns by these presents that he the
said JOSEPH P. SNEED now at the time of sealing & delivering these
presents is seized of a good sure perfect and indefearable estate of
inheritance in fee simple of in and to the one fifth part of said
land now sold and hereby conveyed and that he has good power and
lawfull authority to grant and convey the same to WILLIAM M. SNEED
in manner & form aforesaid and that the said premises now are and so
forever hereafter shall remain and be free and clear of and from all
former gifts grants bargains sales dowers rights & titles of Dower,
judgments Execution, titles, troubles charges and incumberances
whatsoever made done committed & suffered - by the said JOSEPH P.
SNEED, LEASTON SNEED, or any other or persons whatsoever and that
the said JOSEPH P. SNEED & his heirs all and singular the premises
whereby bargained and sold with the appurtenances unto the said
WILLIAM M. SNEED his heirs and assigns against the said JOSEPH P.
SNEED, LEASTON SNEED and their heirs and all and every person or
persons whatsoever shall warrant & forever defend by these presents
in witness whereof the said JOSEPH P. SNEED hath hereunto let his

This Indenture made on the Thirteenth day of August & the year of
our Lord One thousand eight hundred and seventeen By and between
LEASTON SNEED of the one part and JOSEPH P. SNEED of the other part
witnesseth that the said LEASTON SNEED of the county of Burke and
State aforesaid has bargained and sold for and in consideration of
the same of two hundred and fifty dollars to him well and truly paid
by the said JOSEPH P. SNEED at and before the sealing and delivery
of these presents one hundred and Eleven and 1/3 acres of land be
the same more or less lying and being in the state of N. Carolina in
Granville County and known as the Estate of DUDLEY SNEED dec'd which
said land as my lot of the five hundred acres. I the said LEASTON
SNEED do warrant and defend unto the said JOSEPH P. SNEED, his
Executors, Administrator, heirs and assigns forever from myself my
heirs, Executors, Administrators and all other person or persons

This Indenture made this Eighth day of November in the Year of our
Lord One thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety three between PHILLIP SNEED
of the County of Granville & State of North Carolina of the one part
& HARRIS HICKS of the same county & state of the other part
Witnesseth that the sd. PHILLIP SNEED for & in consideration of the
sum of one hundred & fifteen pounds Seventeen shillings curr't money
of Virg'a to him in hand paid by the sd HARRIS HICKS & the rec't of
herewith hereby acknowledge hath given granted bargained & sold & by
these presents doth give grant bargain & sell unto the sd. HARRIS
HICKS a certain tract or parcel of land lying & being Granville
County containing three hundred acres. And thirty one acres
beginning at three black jacks BISHOP HICKS corner in PEYTON WOODS

This Indenture made this 10th day of November one thousand eight
hundred and forty one by and between RICHARD SNEED of the County of
Granville and State of North Carolina of the one part and LEWIS D.
BURWELL of said County and State of the other part, witnesseth that
whereas the said RICHARD SNEED is justly indebted to ARCHIBALD E.
HENDERSON for thirteen judgments of one hundred dollars each and one
other judgment of six dollars all bearing equal date with this deed
and all bearing interest from the 25th day of October 1841; To
WILLIAM HARGROVE SENR in the sum of four hundred & three dollars
with interest due by bonds to wit- HESTER widow of the late CAPT.
BENJAMIN HESTER in the sum of five hundred dollars due by bond; To
ROBERT WILTON in the sum of two hundred dollars & interest due by
bond; To ARCHIBALD E. HENDERSON Executor of MARY DICKINSON in the
sum of nine hundred & twenty three dollars 18/½ cents with interest
due by bond; To PATRICK N. EDGAR in the sum of three hundred & sixty
two dollars & 88/100 with interest due by bond; To the Estate of
ELISABETH MARROW about one hundred & twenty dollars the balance due
on bond; To ARCHIBALD E. HENDERSON guardian of the children of
WILLIAM H. HODGE decd, in the sum of $16.05 & interest due by bond;
also du the same by bond $135.50 cents 1st of January next one other
bond due the same 1st January next $57. To JAMES R. DUTY in the sum
of $120.16 cents by bond & interest to JAMES H. TAYLOR by bond $303
& interest. To JAMES C. COOPER by bond between 60 & 70$ & interest.
To ROBERT B. GILLIAM by bond $43.25 cents & interest. To ROBERT KYLE
by account 40 or 50$; To MARTIN & DONNON of Petersburg by amount $50
or 69$ to LESLIE GILLIAM & 219.16 by note or int. to JAS. M. WIGGINS
twenty nine dollars & ten cents seven cents & int. and whereas the
said RICHARD SNEED is honestly desirous of securing and paying off
the said debts; now in consideration of the premises and for the
further consideration of the sum of ten dollars to the said RICHARD
SNEED in hand paid by the said LEWIS D. BURWELL at and before the
sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged the said RICHARD SNEED has bargained sold and delivered
granted and assigned and by these presents doth bargain sell and
delivery grand and assign unto the said LEWIS D. BURWELL his heirs
executors and administrators the following property, to wit, five or
six town lots in Williamsborough in said County and State unimproved
for boundaries &c see deeds and the following Negroes to wit,
HENRY, SOLOMON, FRANK, CHARLES, ALEX, MATILDA, POLLEY, MARGARET,
TOM, AGNES, NANCY & Child, JUDY, AMANDA, JULIA, POWHATAN, TEMPE,
ROSE, BESTSY, LUCY, NOWEL & half of PETER, the Blacksmith
(the said RICHARD SNEED owning one half of said PETER) also
all his household & kitchen furniture, his stock of books, four in
number, one barouche & harness to have and to hold the same to him
the said LEWIS D. BURWELL his heirs executors & administrators; But
in special trust and confidence nevertheless, that whenever any one
or more of the creditors whose claims are herein secured, shall
notify the trustee LEWIS D. BURWELL he shall proceed to sell
publicly or privately upon such terms as in his direction may seem
best and if publicly upon such notice as he may think proper either
the whole of the property herein conveyed or so much only as may be
necessary to satisfy the debt or debts at the time called for. The
said LEWIS D. BURWELL has full power granted to make title deeds to
the purchases and after finally paying off and discharging all the
debts herein before mentioned interest & costs, the expenses
attending the carrying of this trust into execution and reserving to
himself a reasonable compensation for his trouble, the balance if
any he the said LEWIS D. BURWELL shall pay over to the said RICH'D
SNEED. If all the debts herein before mentioned shall be paid off
and discharged then this deed shall be utterly void and of no
further effect. It is agreed by the parties hereto that the property
herein conveyed shall remain in the possession of the said RICHARD
SNEED till a sale is called for. In testimony whereof the parties
have hereunto affixed their hands & seals the day & date above
written.

Know all men by these presents that I RICHARD SNEED of Granville
County & State of North Carolina have this day bargained sold &
delivered to A. E. HENDERSON his heirs & assigns forever for & in
consideration of the sum of twenty four hundred dollars the rcpt
whereof whereby acknowledged the following Negro Slaves & their
future increase (viz) MILDRED & her three children
MARGARET, TOM & CARY, AMANDA & her four children PEUPOTON
[POWHATAN], JUNIUS, DOLLIS & WILLIAM & GEORGE son of ROSE
& I the said RICHARD SNEED doth for himself his heirs & covenant
agree forever to warrant & defence the title of said Negro Slaves
against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever. Witness my hand
& seal this 10th May 1848.

Know all men by these presents that I RICH'D SNEED of Granville
County & State of North Carolina have this day bargained sold &
delivered & by these presents doth bargain sell & deliver to WILLIAM
M. SNEED his heirs and assigns forever the following Negro Slaves
viz NANCY & her three children ALLICE, ISABELLA & JONES,
Woman POLLY & her three children ARON, CAIN & SALLY &
Negro man HENRY & CHARLES for and in consideration of the sum
of two thousand one hundred dollars the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged and I the said RICH'D SNEED doth for myself my heirs &
covenant & agree forever to warrant & defend the title of said
Negroes against the lawful claims of all persons.

This Indenture made & entered into this 11th December 1825 between
RICHARD SNEED of the County of Granville & State of North Carolina
of the one part & WILLIAM WILSON of the County & State aforesaid of
the part witnesseth that the said SNEED for and in consideration of
one hundred dollars the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath
bargained sold & conveyed all the right title & interest he has in &
to a certain tract of land lying & being in the county & State
aforesaid on the waters of Little Island Creek bounded as follows
viz commencing on a beach on said Creek thence west the said
WILSON's line 201 poles to a pine stump thence with a line of marked
trees 32 pole to a white oak saplin thence East a dividing line of
marked trees 201 poles north fork of said Creek to an ash thence
down said Creek as it meanders to the begining containing forty
acres be the same more or less to have and to hold all & singular
the appurtenances thereunto belonging to the only proper use of him
the said WILLIAM WILSON his heirs & assigns forever the said SNEED
for himself warrants & defends the title of said land against the
claim of all persons whomsoever. In testimony whereof I have
hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal the day & year first above
written.

This Indenture made this 21st day of June in the year of Our Lord
Christ one thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety between SAMUEL SNEED of
the County of Caswell & State of N. Carolina of the one part &
PHILLIP SNEED of the County of Granville & State aforesaid of the
other part Witnesseth that the s'd SAMUEL SNEED for & in
consideration of the sum of three hundred pounds current money have
bargained sold delivered conveyed & confirmed & by these presents
doth give grant bargain sell aliened confirmed unto the s'd PHILLIP
SNEED his heirs & assigns forever one certain tract or parcel of
land situate lying & being in the County of Granville & State
aforesaid on the waters of Buffaloe Creek beginning at JOSHUA BELL'S
corner a pine runing thence West one hundred & Eighty pole to a
hickory on SNEED's line thence South one hundred & four poles to
SNEED's corner whit oak thence West one hundred & twenty six poles
to a black jack on WOOD's line thence South on his line One hundred
& sixty four poles to a post oak on SEARS'& WOOD's line thence East
to a post oak one hundred & two pole thence South Ninety poles to a
poplar on SEARS' & PERSON's corner thence east one hundred & Ninety
four poles to a pine in PARISH's line thence on his & BELL's line to
the first station containing by estimation four hundred & thirty one
acres be the same more or less To have & to hold the aforesaid
granted premises with all & singular the rights benefits privileges
& appurtenances to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining
thereto the s'd PHILLIP SNEED his heirs & assigns forever from the
just claim or any person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof
the s'd SAMUEL SNEED hath hereunto set his hand & affixed his seal
the day & year above written.

This Indenture made this first day of February A.D. 1828 between
WILLIAM M. SNEED of the one part and LITTLETON TABORN of the other
part both of the County of Granville and State of North Carolina
Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred
dollars to him in hand paid by the said LITTLETON TABORN at and
before the sealing of these presents the receipt of which he the
said SNEED doth hereby acknowledge he the said WILLIAM M. SNEED,
hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened and confirmed, and by these
presents doth grant, bargain, sell, alien and confirm unto the said
LITTLETON TABORN and his heirs a certain piece or parcel of land
situate lying and being in the county of Granville containing Twenty
acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows (To Wit) on
the North by the land of JAMES NUTTALL on the West by the land of
ANDREW BADGETT on the South by the land of DARLING BASS and on the
East by the land of HENRY ANDERSON, to have and to hold the said
land hereby conveyed to the said TABORN his heirs and assigns
forever And the said WILLIAM M. SNEED doth for himself his heirs
Executors Administrators by these presents covenant promise and
agree to & with the said LITTLETON TABORN his heirs and assigns
thereto the said WILLIAM SNEED & his heirs all & singular the
premises hereby bargained and sold with the appurtenances unto the
said LITTLETON TABORN his heirs and assigns against the claim of all
persons shall and will warrant and forever defend. In witness
whereof the said WILLIAM M. SNEED doth hereunto affix his seal and
subscribe his name.
