Granville County, NC Emory Chronology

Prepared by Harold A. Lloyd

War Records ca. 1778

John Emery and Edmund Emery joined Capt. Benjamin Wade's Company No. 6 under the 1778 Assembly Act. John Emery was a planter, 22 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale looking with brown hair and walked "with a little stooping." Edmund Emery was also a planter, was 19 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high, had dark hair and a swarthy complexion.  This would give Edmund a birth year of around 1759.

*Note:  The male under 10 could be John born ca. 1795 and the male 10-16 could be the William who shows up in 1804.  If William was 16 in 1800, he was close to 21 in 1804 and thus listable at that time.  Perhaps William is not mentioned in the 1825 estate because he had died by 1825?  Based on Lewis’s age given in the 1850 Wake Census, he would appear to old to be Edmund’s son and perhaps they are brothers.

Undated Dutch District school census in the NC Archives in Raleigh presumably from the 1840s lists Green Emory as having the following children: Nathaniel Emory, Frances Emory, Isaac Emory, William Emory and Jessee Emory.

An undated Beaverdam census lists John Emory as having five school age children: "Wyat, William, Hinton, John, Edney."

1842 Granville School Census

There is in the NC Archives in Raleigh an August 2, 1842 Granville-Cedar Creek District school census showing what I read to be "Wilis Emry" or “Wilie Emry” as the father of Ephriam, Joseph (who I believe is likely Jasper) and Lewis.

According to an 1845 Dutch District school census in the NC Archives in Raleigh of children 5 to 21 years as supplemented by the 1850 Granville Census, George Emory had the following children:  Robert Emory, John Emory, George Emory, Samuel Emory, Simson? Emory, Rutha? Emory, Wiley Emory, Caroline Emory and William Emory.

Note On Ages:  White men under 21 and, beginning in 1801, over the age of 50 were exempted from poll taxes.  Beginning in 1817 this upper limit was lowered to 45.   Ages can thus be calculated based on this formula.  Tax lists are often incomplete as comparisons with census shows.
